A Hexabenzocoronene-Based Helical Nanographene.

ABSTRACT: A synthetic route towards a novel hexabenzocoronene-based helical nanographene motif was developed. A hexaphenylbenzene precursor was therefore designed, which cannot undergo, due to steric restrictions, a complete planarization reaction. This precursor was transformed under oxidative cyclodehydrogenation conditions to a ?-extended [5]helicene, which was fully characterized including X-ray diffraction analysis.

Nanographene-Based Heterojunctions for High-Performance Organic Phototransistor Memory Devices.

Project description:Organic phototransistors can enable many important applications such as nonvolatile memory, artificial synapses, and photodetectors in next-generation optical communication and wearable electronics. However, it is still a challenge to achieve a big memory window (threshold voltage response ∆Vth ) for phototransistors. Here, a nanographene-based heterojunction phototransistor memory with large ∆Vth responses is reported. Exposure to low intensity light (25.7 µW cm-2 ) for 1 s yields a memory window of 35 V, and the threshold voltage shift is found to be larger than 140 V under continuous light illumination. The device exhibits both good photosensitivity (3.6 × 105 ) and memory properties including long retention time (>1.5 × 105 s), large hysteresis (45.35 V), and high endurance for voltage-erasing and light-programming. These findings demonstrate the high application potential of nanographenes in the field of optoelectronics. In addition, the working principle of these hybrid nanographene-organic structured heterojunction phototransistor memory devices is described which provides new insight into the design of high-performance organic phototransistor devices.

A contorted nanographene shelter.

Project description:Nanographenes have kindled considerable interest in the fields of materials science and supramolecular chemistry as a result of their unique self-assembling and optoelectronic properties. Encapsulating the contorted nanographenes inside artificial receptors, however, remains challenging. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a trigonal prismatic hexacationic cage, which has a large cavity and adopts a relatively flexible conformation. It serves as a receptor, not only for planar coronene, but also for contorted nanographene derivatives with diameters of approximately 15 Å and thicknesses of 7 Å. A comprehensive investigation of the host-guest interactions in the solid, solution and gaseous states by experimentation and theoretical calculations reveals collectively an induced-fit binding mechanism with high binding affinities between the cage and the nanographenes. Notably, the photostability of the nanographenes is improved significantly by the ultrafast deactivation of their excited states within the cage. Encapsulating the contorted nanographenes inside the cage provides a noncovalent strategy for regulating their photoreactivity.

Site-Specific Reduction-Induced Hydrogenation of a Helical Bilayer Nanographene with K and Rb Metals: Electron Multiaddition and Selective Rb<sup>+</sup> Complexation.

Project description:The chemical reduction of π-conjugated bilayer nanographene 1 (C138 H120 ) with K and Rb in the presence of 18-crown-6 affords [K+ (18-crown-6)(THF)2 ][{K+ (18-crown-6)}2 (THF)0.5 ][C138 H122 3- ] (2) and [Rb+ (18-crown-6)2 ][{Rb+ (18-crown-6)}2 (C138 H122 3- )] (3). Whereas K+ cations are fully solvent-separated from the trianionic core thus affording a "naked" 1.3 - anion, Rb+ cations are coordinated to the negatively charged layers of 1.3 - . According to DFT calculations, the localization of the first two electrons in the helicene moiety leads to an unprecedented site-specific hydrogenation process at the carbon atoms located on the edge of the helicene backbone. This uncommon reduction-induced site-specific hydrogenation provokes dramatic changes in the (electronic) structure of 1 as the helicene backbone becomes more compressed and twisted upon chemical reduction, which results in a clear slippage of the bilayers.

Capacitive Organic Anode Based on Fluorinated-Contorted Hexabenzocoronene: Applicable to Lithium-Ion and Sodium-Ion Storage Cells.

Project description:Conducting polymer-based organic electrochemical capacitor materials have attracted attention because of their highly conductive nature and highly reversible redox reactions on the surface of electrodes. However, owing to their poor stabilities in aprotic electrolytes, alternative organic electrochemical capacitive electrodes are being actively sought. Here, fluorine atoms are introduced into contorted hexabenzocoronene (cHBC) to achieve the first small-molecule-based organic capacitive energy-storage cells that operate at high current rates with satisfactory specific capacities of ≈160 mA h g-1 and superior cycle capabilities (>400) without changing significantly. This high capacitive behavior in the P21/c crystal phase of fluorinated cHBC (F-cHBC) is caused mainly by the fluorine atoms at the end of each peripheral aromatic ring. Combined Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the most electronegative fluorine atoms accelerate ion diffusion on the surface to promote fast Li+ ion uptake and release by an applied current. Moreover, F-cHBC has potential applications as the capacitive anode in Na-ion storage cells. The fast dynamics of its capacitive behavior allow it to deliver a specific capacity of 65 mA h g-1 at a high current of 4000 mA g-1.

Solution-processed nanographene distributed feedback lasers.

Project description:The chemical synthesis of nanographene molecules constitutes the bottom-up approach toward graphene, simultaneously providing rational chemical design, structure-property control and exploitation of their semiconducting and luminescence properties. Here, we report nanographene-based lasers from three zigzag-edged polycyclic aromatics. The devices consist of a passive polymer film hosting the nanographenes and a top-layer polymeric distributed feedback resonator. Both the active material and the laser resonator are processed from solution, key for the purpose of obtaining low-cost devices with mechanical flexibility. The prepared lasers show narrow linewidth ( < 0.13 nm) emission at different spectral regions covering a large segment of the visible spectrum, and up to the vicinity of the near-infrared. They show outstandingly long operational lifetimes (above 105 pump pulses) and very low thresholds. These results represent a significant step forward in the field of graphene and broaden its versatility in low-cost devices implying light emission, such as lasers.

Physical Hybrid of Nanographene/Carbon Nanotubes as Reinforcing Agents of NR-Based Rubber Foam.

Project description:Natural rubber (NR) foams reinforced by a physical hybrid of nanographene/carbon nanotubes were fabricated using a two-roll mill and compression molding process. The effects of nanographene (GNS) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were investigated on the curing behavior, foam morphology, and mechanical and thermal properties of the NR nanocomposite foams. Microscope investigations showed that the GNS/CNT hybrid fillers acted as nucleation agents and increased the cell density and decreased the cell size and wall thickness. Simultaneously, the cell size distribution became narrower, containing more uniform multiple closed-cell pores. The rheometric results showed that the GNS/CNT hybrids accelerated the curing process and decreased the scorch time from 6.81 to 5.08 min and the curing time from 14.3 to 11.12 min. Other results showed that the GNS/CNT hybrid improved the foam's curing behavior. The degradation temperature of the nanocomposites at 5 wt.% and 50 wt.% weight loss increased from 407 °C to 414 °C and from 339 °C to 346 °C, respectively, and the residual ash increased from 5.7 wt.% to 12.23 wt.% with increasing hybrid nanofiller content. As the amount of the GNS/CNT hybrids increased in the rubber matrix, the modulus also increased, and the Tg increased slightly from -45.77 °C to -38.69 °C. The mechanical properties of the NR nanocomposite foams, including the hardness, resilience, and compression, were also improved by incorporating GNS/CNT hybrid fillers. Overall, the incorporation of the nano hybrid fillers elevated the desirable properties of the rubber foam.

A Nanographene-Based Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework as a Stable and Efficient Photocatalyst.

Project description:Synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with desirable organic units furnishes advanced materials with unique functionalities. As an emerging class of two-dimensional (2D) COFs, sp2 -carbon-conjugated COFs provide a facile platform to build highly stable and crystalline porous polymers. Herein, a 2D olefin-linked COF was prepared by employing nanographene, namely, dibenzo[hi,st]ovalene (DBOV), as a building block. The DBOV-COF exhibits unique ABC-stacked lattices, enhanced stability, and charge-carrier mobility of ≈0.6 cm2 V-1 s-1 inferred from ultrafast terahertz photoconductivity measurements. The ABC-stacking structure was revealed by the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. DBOV-COF demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic activity in hydroxylation, which was attributed to the exposure of narrow-energy-gap DBOV cores in the COF pores, in conjunction with efficient charge transport following light absorption.

Enantiopure distorted ribbon-shaped nanographene combining two-photon absorption-based upconversion and circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Herein we describe a distorted ribbon-shaped nanographene exhibiting unprecedented combination of optical properties in graphene-related materials, namely upconversion based on two-photon absorption (TPA-UC) together with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The compound is a graphene molecule of ca. 2 nm length and 1 nm width with edge defects that promote the distortion of the otherwise planar lattice. The edge defects are an aromatic saddle-shaped ketone unit and a [5]carbohelicene moiety. This system is shown to combine two-photon absorption and circularly polarized luminescence and a remarkably long emission lifetime of 21.5 ns. The [5]helicene is responsible for the chiroptical activity while the push-pull geometry and the extended network of sp2 carbons are factors favoring the nonlinear absorption. Electronic structure theoretical calculations support the interpretation of the results.

Temperature Dependence of Magnetophotoconductance in One-Dimensional Molecular Assembly of Hexabenzocoronene.

Project description:Temperature dependencies of transient photocharge and magnetophotoconductance effect of columnar self-assemblies of the hexabenzocoronene derivative (HBC-C14), which is a prospective one-dimensional photoconductor, presented different thermal activation processes for carrier generation and transportation, respectively. Thermal equilibrium between the low-lying short distance and high-lying long-distance geminate electron-hole (e-h) pairs is the origin for activation in carrier generation. The energy difference between these e-h pairs is estimated to be 7 meV, which was mainly due to the Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, the carrier transport with thermal activation was understood by the multiple trapping model. Carrier detrapping from localized states located in the band gap causes the thermal activation in the carrier transport. The shallow energy depth at the density peak of the localized state from the mobility edge (10 ± 3 meV) is a unique nature of HBC-C14 self-assemblies. A very narrow Gaussian distribution for density of the localized states was also clarified.

Data Mining for Parameters Affecting Polymorph Selection in Contorted Hexabenzocoronene Derivatives.

Project description:The macroscopic properties of molecular materials can be drastically influenced by their solid-state packing arrangements, of which there can be many (e.g., polymorphism). Strategies to controllably and predictively access select polymorphs are thus highly desired, but computationally predicting the conditions necessary to access a given polymorph is challenging with the current state of the art. Using derivatives of contorted hexabenzocoronene, cHBC, we employed data mining, rather than first-principles approaches, to find relationships between the crystallizing molecule, postdeposition solvent-vapor annealing conditions that induce polymorphic transformation, and the resulting polymorphs. This analysis yields a correlative function that can be used to successfully predict the appearance of either one of two polymorphs in thin films of cHBC derivatives. Within the postdeposition processing phase space of cHBC derivatives, we have demonstrated an approach to generate guidelines to select crystallization conditions to bias polymorph access. We believe this approach can be applied more broadly to accelerate the predictions of processing conditions to access desired molecular polymorphs, making progress toward one of the grand challenges identified by the Materials Genome Initiative.
