Project description:Fluoride abstraction from bis-m-terphenylelement fluorides (2,6-Mes2 C6 H3 )2 EF (E=P, As) generated the highly reactive phosphenium ion [(2,6-Mes2 C6 H3 )2 P]+ and the arsenium ion [(2,6-Mes2 C6 H3 )2 As]+ , which immediately underwent intramolecular electrophilic substitution and formation of an 1,2,4-trimethyl-6-mesityl-5-m-terphenyl-benzo[b]phospholium ion and an 1,2,4-trimethyl-6-mesityl-5-m-terphenyl-benzo[b]arsolium ion, respectively. The formation of the latter involved a methyl group migration from the ortho-position of a flanking mesityl group to the meta-position. This reactivity of [(2,6-Mes2 C6 H3 )2 E]+ (E=P, As) is in sharp contrast to the related stibenium ion [(2,6-Mes2 C6 H3 )2 Sb]+ and bismuthenium ion [(2,6-Mes2 C6 H3 )2 Bi]+ , which have been recently isolated and fully characterized (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2018, 57, 10080-10084). On the basis of DFT calculations, a mechanism for the rearrangement of the phosphenium and arsenium ions into the phospholium and arsolium ions is proposed, which is not feasible for the stibenium and bismuthenium ions.

The Phospha-Bora-Wittig Reaction.

Project description:We report the phospha-bora-Wittig reaction for the direct preparation of phosphaalkenes from aldehydes, ketones, esters, or amides. The transient phosphaborene Mes*P═B-NR2 reacts with carbonyl compounds to form 1,2,3-phosphaboraoxetanes, analogues of oxaphosphetane intermediates in the classical Wittig reaction. 1,2,3-Phosphaboraoxetanes undergo thermal or Lewis acid-promoted cycloreversion, yielding phosphaalkenes. Experimental and density functional theory studies reveal far-reaching similarities between classical and phospha-bora-Wittig reactions.

Cationic Carbene Analogues: Donor-Free Phosphenium and Arsenium Ions.

Project description:Carbenes and their analogues have constantly enthralled chemists with their intriguing reactivity of ambiphilic character stemming from their electronic structures. Phosphenium and arsenium ions are fiercely reactive cationic species, the stabilization of which has been so far achieved in the condensed phase by dispersing the positive charge through electromeric conjugation with at least one electron-rich substituent (frequently amido groups). Although observed in the gas phase, the isolation of dicoordinate phosphenium and arsenium ions lacking such stabilizing ligands has eluded chemists for decades. Herein we show that by judicious choice of aromatic substituents, dicoordinate, donor-free, Lewis-superacidic phosphenium and arsenium ions can be kinetically stabilized. They feature singlet electronic ground states possessing a vacant p-orbital and an electron lone pair with predominantly s-character.

Intramolecular water-splitting reaction in single collisions of water ions with surfaces.

Project description:We report the direct formation of H2 and O pair ions through single collisions of water ions with metal surfaces at hyperthermal energies. This unusual intramolecular reaction proceeds also for heavy and semi-heavy water, producing molecular D2 and HD ions. The selectivity of this water splitting channel is estimated at being between 9 and 13% versus complete dissociation. The collision kinematics support the hypothesis of a water molecule colliding with a single surface atom, thereby forming an excited precursor (Rydberg?) state, which dissociates subsequently to form the molecular hydrogen ion with high kinetic energy. Inelastic energy loss considerations yield an estimate for the energy of the excited precursor state of ∼7 eV and ∼11 eV at low and high incidence energies. These energies are close to the Ã state (1B1, 7.5 eV) and B state (1A1, 9.7 eV) of excited water (Rydberg states).

Insertion of Phosphenium Ions into a Bicyclo[1.1.0]Tetraphosphabutane Iron Complex.

Project description:By reacting [{Cp‴Fe(CO)2}2(µ,η1:1-P4)] (1) with in situ generated phosphenium ions [Ph2P][A] ([A]- = [OTf]- = [O3SCF3]-, [PF6]-), a mixture of two main products of the composition [{Cp‴Fe(CO)2}2(µ,η1:1-P5(C6H5)2)][PF6] (2a and 3a) could be identified by extensive 31P NMR spectroscopic studies at 193 K. Compound 3a was also characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, showing the rarely observed bicyclo[2.1.0]pentaphosphapentane unit. At room temperature, the novel compound [{Cp‴Fe}(µ,η4:1-P5Ph2){Cp‴(CO)2Fe}][PF6] (4) is formed by decarbonylation. Reacting 1 with in situ generated diphenyl arsenium ions gives short-lived intermediates at 193 K which disproportionate at room temperature into tetraphenyldiarsine and [{Cp‴Fe(CO)2}4(µ4,η1:1:1:1-P8)][OTf]2 (5) containing a tetracyclo[3.3.0.02,7.03,6]octaphosphaoctane ligand.

Gradual Donor Stabilization of a Transient Ferrocene Bridged Bisphosphanyl Phosphenium Cation.

Project description:A transient phosphenium cation embedded into a [3]ferrocenophane scaffold was formed via chloride abstraction. The cation has been trapped with phosphane, carbene, and silylene donors resulting in stable adducts or bond activation of the ferrocenophane bridge. In the absence of donors, dimerization of the phosphenium cation to the corresponding dication is observed or P-C bond activation with migration of a substituent leading to a putative phosphoniodiphosphene. Using 1,3-di-tert-butylimidazol-2-silylene as the donor, further reaction of the initially formed chlorosilane leads to activation of a P-P bond of the ferrocenophane scaffold with ring expansion of the ansa-bridge. The donor formation and bonding situation are investigated by density functional theory calculations as well as experimental methods (e.g., NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography).

Phosphirenium Ions as Masked Phosphenium Catalysts: Mechanistic Evaluation and Application in Synthesis.

Project description:The utilization of phosphirenium ions is presented; optimized and broadened three-membered ring construction is described together with the use of these ions as efficient pre-catalysts for metal-free carbonyl reduction with silanes. Full characterization of the phosphirenium ions is presented, and initial experimental and computational mechanistic studies indicate that these act as a "masked phosphenium" source that is accessed via ring opening. Catalysis proceeds via associative transfer of {Ph2P+} to a carbonyl nucleophile, H-SiR3 bond addition over the C=O group, and associative displacement of the product by a further equivalent of the carbonyl substrate, which completes the catalytic cycle. A competing off-cycle process leading to vinyl phosphine formation is detailed for the hydrosilylation of benzophenone for which an inverse order in [silane] is observed. Experimentally, the formation of side products, including off-cycle vinyl phosphine, is favored by electron-donating substituents on the phosphirenium cation, while catalytic hydrosilylation is promoted by electron-withdrawing substituents. These observations are rationalized in parallel computational studies.

Sequential Electrophilic Substitution Reactions of Tungsten-Coordinated Phosphenium Ions and Phosphine Triflates.

Project description:ion of chloride from [W(CO)5{PPhCl2}] with AgOSO2CF3 leads to the phosphine triflate complex [W(CO)5{PPhCl(OSO2CF3)}] which undergoes electrophilic substitution reactions with N,N-diethylaniline, anisole, N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine, toluene, biphenyl, naphthalene, 2,7,9,9-tetramethyl xanthene, and allyltrimethylsilane to form the chlorophosphine complexes [W(CO)5{PPhClR}], where R = p-diethylanilinyl, p-anisyl, 2-(N,N-dimethyl-4-methylphenyl), p-tolyl, p-phenylphenyl, 1-naphthyl, 4-(2,7,9,9-tetramethylxanthyl), and allyl. Abstraction of the second chloride with AgOSO2CF3 leads, in most cases, to the respective phosphine triflates [W(CO)5{PPhR(OSO2CF3)}], which react with ferrocene to form the ferrocenyl phosphine complexes [W(CO)5{PPhR(C10H9Fe)}]. The W(CO)5 unit can be removed via photolysis in the presence of bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane to form metal-free phosphines.

Project description:Optically active 4-substituted tetrahydroisoquinolines were synthesized via intramolecular Friedel-Crafts (FC) reactions of aziridinium ions in a highly regio- and stereoselective manner. Control experiments suggest the formation and ring-opening of aziridinium ions as the key intermediates in the Lewis acid catalyzed FC reactions.
