Spatio-temporal parameters of ataxia gait dataset obtained with the Kinect.

ABSTRACT: Ataxic syndromes include several rare, inherited and acquired conditions. One of the main issues is the absence of specific, and sensitive automatic evaluation tools and digital outcome measures to obtain a continuous monitoring of subjects' motor ability. Gait evaluation was performed by Kinect v2 in a cohort of young participant affected by ataxia syndrome. The dataset is composed of the spatio-temporal parameters calculated by the skeleton acquired by the Kinect sensor, by the diagnosis of each participant, and by the total score of the clinical scale SARA. These parameters have been previously validated and corrected as requested by the Bland-Altman test.

Spatio-temporal gait parameters obtained from foot-worn inertial sensors are reliable in healthy adults in single- and dual-task conditions.

Project description:Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are increasingly popular and may be usable in clinical routine to assess gait. However, assessing their intra-session reliability is crucial and has not been tested with foot-worn sensors in healthy participants. The aim of this study was to assess the intra-session reliability of foot-worn IMUs for measuring gait parameters in healthy adults. Twenty healthy participants were enrolled in the study and performed the 10-m walk test in single- and dual-task ('carrying a full cup of water') conditions, three trials per condition. IMUs were used to assess spatiotemporal gait parameters, gait symmetry parameters (symmetry index (SI) and symmetry ratio (SR)), and dual task effects parameters. The relative and the absolute reliability were calculated for each gait parameter. Results showed that spatiotemporal gait parameters measured with foot-worn inertial sensors were reliable; symmetry gait parameters relative reliability was low, and SR showed better absolute reliability than SI; dual task effects were poorly reliable, and taking the mean of the second and the third trials was the most reliable. Foot-worn IMUs are reliable to assess spatiotemporal and symmetry ratio gait parameters but symmetry index and DTE gait parameters reliabilities were low and need to be interpreted with cautious by clinicians and researchers.

Gait Spatio-Temporal Parameters Vary Significantly Between Indoor, Outdoor and Different Surfaces.

Project description:Human gait is usually studied in clinical environments, but wearable devices have extended gait analysis beyond traditional assessments. Older adults tend to walk differently indoors and outdoors; however, most gait assessments are conducted on indoor surfaces. It is therefore important to evaluate gait in various outdoor environments. Insights gained from these assessments significantly enhance our understanding of the impact of environmental factors on gait performance and ensure that clinical evaluations are effectively aligned with everyday locomotion. A total of 100 participants with foot pain, 38 young (18-45 years) and 62 older adults (65-80 years), completed a 10-Metre Walk Test (10MWT) in three randomised conditions at their typical, comfortable walking pace, including (1) 10MWT of indoor walking, (2) 10MWT of outdoor walking on grass and (3) 10MWT of outdoor walking on a sidewalk. Wearable inertial sensors recorded gait data and the magnitudes of the following gait measures: gait speed, cadence, stride length, stride duration and asymmetry. A statistical analysis using ANOVA and post hoc comparisons revealed a significantly lower gait speed (p < 0.001), lower stride length (p < 0.001) and lower asymmetry (p < 0.001) indoors compared to outdoors, demonstrating that environmental factors significantly affect spatio-temporal gait parameters. Wearable sensor-based gait analysis performed in controlled clinical settings may underestimate real-life conditions. Some important spatio-temporal parameters, useful in detecting people with gait impairment and at risk of falling, are significantly affected by environment and individual postural ability more than demographic factors.

Spatio-Temporal Gait Parameters of Hospitalized Older Patients: Comparison of Fallers and Non-Fallers.

Project description:Gait disorders are predisposing factors for falls. They are accessible to rehabilitation and can be analyzed using tools that collect spatio-temporal parameters of walking, such as the GAITRite® mat. The objective of this retrospective study was to find differences between the spatio-temporal parameters in patients who had fallen compared to patients who did not fall in a population of older patients hospitalized in acute geriatrics department. Patients over 75 years were included. For each patient, spatio-temporal parameters were collected using the GAITRite® mat. The patients were divided into two groups according to whether they had a history of fall. The spatio-temporal parameters were compared between the two groups and in relation to the general population. Sixty-seven patients, with an average age of 85.9 ± 6 years, were included. The patients had comorbidities, cognitive impairment and were polymedicated. The mean walking speed was 51.4 cm/s in non-fallers group and 47.3 cm/s in fallers group (p = 0.539), indicating pathological walking in comparison with the general population of the same age (average 100 cm/s). No association was found between the spatio-temporal parameters and fall, probably linked to many confounding factors such as the pathogenicity of walking of our patients and their comorbidities.

Accuracy Verification of Spatio-Temporal and Kinematic Parameters for Gait Using Inertial Measurement Unit System.

Project description:Inertial measurement unit systems are wearable sensors that can measure the movement of a human in real-time with relatively little space and high portability. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of the inertial measurement unit (IMU) system for gait analysis by comparing it with measurements obtained using an optical motion capture (OMC) system. To compare the accuracies of these two different motion capture systems, the Spatio-temporal and kinematic parameters were measured in young adults during normal walking. Thirty healthy participants participated in the study. Data were collected while walking 5 strides on a 7 m walkway at a self-selected speed. Results of gait analysis showed that the Spatio-temporal (stride time, stride length, cadence, step length) and kinematic (knee joint peak to peak of movement) parameters were not significantly different in the participant. Spatio-temporal and kinematic parameters of the two systems were compared using the Bland-Altman method. The results obtained showed that the measurements of Spatio-temporal and kinematic parameters of gait by the two systems were similar, which suggested that IMU and OMC systems could be used interchangeably for gait measurements. Therefore, gait analysis performed using the wearable IMU system might efficiently provide gait measurements and enable accurate analysis.

An investigation of the spatio-temporal parameters of gait and margins of stability throughout adulthood.

Project description:Age-related changes in the way of walking may induce changes in dynamic stability. Therefore, the relationship between age, spatio-temporal characteristics and margins of stability was examined. One hundred and five healthy adults aged between 20 and 89 years old were analysed on spatio-temporal characteristics and margins of stability using three-dimensional motion analysis. Subjects walked barefoot over a 12-m-long walkway at their preferred walking speed. Covariance among gait characteristics was reduced using a factor analysis, identifying domains of gait. The influence of age, gender, body mass index (BMI) and leg length on domains of gait and margins of stability was investigated using linear mixed models. A stepwise linear regression identified domains of gait predicting the variance in margins of stability. Four domains of gait explaining 74.17% of the variance were identified. Age had a significant influence on the medio-lateral margin of stability and the 'variability', 'pace' and 'base of support' domain. BMI significantly influenced the medio-lateral margin of stability; gender and leg length had no influence on either of the margins of stability. The 'base of support' domain predicted 26% of the variance in the medio-lateral margin of stability. When considering the margins of stability, especially when comparing multiple groups, age, BMI and spatio-temporal parameters should be taken into account.

Spatio-temporal gait variables predicted incident disability.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Assessing the risk of disability in older adults is important for developing prevention and intervention strategies to decrease potential disability and dependency. The aim of this study was to examine the association between spatio-temporal gait variables and disability among older adults. METHODS:We conducted a prospective study in a community setting. We collected data from 4121 subjects (≥ 65 years, mean age: 71.9 years). Gait speed, cadence, stride length, and stride length variability were measured at baseline. Participants were instructed to walk at their usual pace along a 6.4 m straight and flat path on which an electronic gait measuring device was mounted at mid 2.4 m. Subsequent disability was confirmed from long-term care insurance records. RESULTS:During follow-up duration (mean: 49.6 months), 425 participants had incident disability. The cut-off value to detect high or low function in each gait variable was determined using the Youden index. Cox proportional hazard analysis adjusted for covariates showed that disability was significantly predicted by low function in each gait variable using the cut-off values: gait speed (hazard ratio [95% confidential intervals]: 2.06 [1.65-2.57]), stride length (2.17 [1.72-2.73]), cadence (1.49 [1.20-1.86], and stride length variability (1.46 [1.19-1.80]). The number of gait variables that scored in the low function category were also cumulatively related to subsequent disability (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS:This study revealed that spatio-temporal gait variables had a significant predictive value for incident disability. Multifaceted and quantitative gait analysis can contribute to disability risk assessment.

Towards Mobile Gait Analysis: Concurrent Validity and Test-Retest Reliability of an Inertial Measurement System for the Assessment of Spatio-Temporal Gait Parameters.

Project description:The purpose of this study was to assess the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of a sensor-based gait analysis system. Eleven healthy subjects and four Parkinson's disease (PD) patients were asked to complete gait tasks whilst wearing two inertial measurement units at their feet. The extracted spatio-temporal parameters of 1166 strides were compared to those extracted from a reference camera-based motion capture system concerning concurrent validity. Test-retest reliability was assessed for five healthy subjects at three different days in a two week period. The two systems were highly correlated for all gait parameters ( r > 0.93 ). The bias for stride time was 0 ± 16 ms and for stride length was 1.4 ± 6.7 cm. No systematic range dependent errors were observed and no significant changes existed between healthy subjects and PD patients. Test-retest reliability was excellent for all parameters (intraclass correlation (ICC) > 0.81) except for gait velocity (ICC > 0.55). The sensor-based system was able to accurately capture spatio-temporal gait parameters as compared to the reference camera-based system for normal and impaired gait. The system's high retest reliability renders the use in recurrent clinical measurements and in long-term applications feasible.

Validity of Spatio-Temporal Gait Parameters in Healthy Young Adults Using a Motion-Sensor-Based Gait Analysis System (ORPHE ANALYTICS) during Walking and Running.

Project description:Motion sensors are widely used for gait analysis. The validity of commercial gait analysis systems is of great interest because calculating position/angle-level gait parameters potentially produces an error in the integration process of the motion sensor data; moreover, the validity of ORPHE ANALYTICS, a motion-sensor-based gait analysis system, has not yet been examined. We examined the validity of the gait parameters calculated using ORPHE ANALYTICS relative to those calculated using conventional optical motion capture. Nine young adults performed gait tasks on a treadmill at speeds of 2-12 km/h. The three-dimensional position data and acceleration and angular velocity data of the feet were collected. The gait parameters were calculated from motion sensor data using ORPHE ANALYTICS, and optical motion capture data. Intraclass correlation coefficients [ICC(2,1)] were calculated for relative validities. Eight items, namely, stride duration, stride length, stride frequency, stride speed, vertical height, stance phase duration, swing phase duration, and sagittal angleIC exhibited excellent relative validities [ICC(2,1) > 0.9]. In contrast, sagittal angleTO and frontal angleIC demonstrated good [ICC(2,1) = 0.892-0.833] and moderate relative validity [ICC(2,1) = 0.566-0.627], respectively. ORPHE ANALYTICS was found to exhibit excellent relative validities for most gait parameters. These results suggest its feasibility for gait analysis outside the laboratory setting.

Project description:Our understanding of how COVID-19 spreads over a territory needs to be improved. For example, the evaluation of disease spatiotemporal distribution and its association with other characteristics can help identify covariates, model the behavior of the epidemic, and provide useful information for decision making. Data were compiled from the National Population Council (CONAPO), Google, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), and the Secretary of Health. The data describe the cases of COVID and characteristics of the population, such as distribution, mobility, and prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. These data were processed to be compatible and georeferenced to a common geographic framework to facilitate spatial analysis in a geographic information system (GIS).
