Breaking Free from Cobalt Reliance in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

ABSTRACT: The exponential growth in demand for electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates increasing supplies of low-cost and high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Naturally, the ramp-up in LIB production raises concerns over raw material availability, where constraints can generate severe price spikes and bring the momentum and optimism of the EV market to a halt. Particularly, the reliance of cobalt in the cathode is concerning owing to its high cost, scarcity, and centralized and volatile supply chain structure. However, compositions suitable for EV applications that demonstrate high energy density and lifetime are all reliant on cobalt to some degree. In this work, we assess the necessity and feasibility of developing and commercializing cobalt-free cathode materials for LIBs. Promising cobalt-free compositions and critical areas of research are highlighted, which provide new insight into the role and contribution of cobalt.

Cobalt-free composite-structured cathodes with lithium-stoichiometry control for sustainable lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Lithium-ion batteries play a crucial role in decarbonizing transportation and power grids, but their reliance on high-cost, earth-scarce cobalt in the commonly employed high-energy layered Li(NiMnCo)O2 cathodes raises supply-chain and sustainability concerns. Despite numerous attempts to address this challenge, eliminating Co from Li(NiMnCo)O2 remains elusive, as doing so detrimentally affects its layering and cycling stability. Here, we report on the rational stoichiometry control in synthesizing Li-deficient composite-structured LiNi0.95Mn0.05O2, comprising intergrown layered and rocksalt phases, which outperforms traditional layered counterparts. Through multiscale-correlated experimental characterization and computational modeling on the calcination process, we unveil the role of Li-deficiency in suppressing the rocksalt-to-layered phase transformation and crystal growth, leading to small-sized composites with the desired low anisotropic lattice expansion/contraction during charging and discharging. As a consequence, Li-deficient LiNi0.95Mn0.05O2 delivers 90% first-cycle Coulombic efficiency, 90% capacity retention, and close-to-zero voltage fade for 100 deep cycles, showing its potential as a Co-free cathode for sustainable Li-ion batteries.

Solvent-Free Manufacturing of Electrodes for Lithium-ion Batteries.

Project description:Lithium ion battery electrodes were manufactured using a new, completely dry powder painting process. The solvents used for conventional slurry-cast electrodes have been completely removed. Thermal activation time has been greatly reduced due to the time and resource demanding solvent evaporation process needed with slurry-cast electrode manufacturing being replaced by a hot rolling process. It has been found that thermal activation time to induce mechanical bonding of the thermoplastic polymer to the remaining active electrode particles is only a few seconds. Removing the solvent and drying process allows large-scale Li-ion battery production to be more economically viable in markets such as automotive energy storage systems. By understanding the surface energies of various powders which govern the powder mixing and binder distribution, bonding tests of the dry-deposited particles onto the current collector show that the bonding strength is greater than slurry-cast electrodes, 148.8 kPa as compared to 84.3 kPa. Electrochemical tests show that the new electrodes outperform conventional slurry processed electrodes, which is due to different binder distribution.

Transparent lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Transparent devices have recently attracted substantial attention. Various applications have been demonstrated, including displays, touch screens, and solar cells; however, transparent batteries, a key component in fully integrated transparent devices, have not yet been reported. As battery electrode materials are not transparent and have to be thick enough to store energy, the traditional approach of using thin films for transparent devices is not suitable. Here we demonstrate a grid-structured electrode to solve this dilemma, which is fabricated by a microfluidics-assisted method. The feature dimension in the electrode is below the resolution limit of human eyes, and, thus, the electrode appears transparent. Moreover, by aligning multiple electrodes together, the amount of energy stored increases readily without sacrificing the transparency. This results in a battery with energy density of 10 Wh/L at a transparency of 60%. The device is also flexible, further broadening their potential applications. The transparent device configuration also allows in situ Raman study of fundamental electrochemical reactions in batteries.

Cobalt Sulfide Confined in N-Doped Porous Branched Carbon Nanotubes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered new generation of large-scale energy-storage devices. However, LIBs suffer from a lack of desirable anode materials with excellent specific capacity and cycling stability. In this work, we design a novel hierarchical structure constructed by encapsulating cobalt sulfide nanowires within nitrogen-doped porous branched carbon nanotubes (NBNTs) for LIBs. The unique hierarchical Co9S8@NBNT electrode displayed a reversible specific capacity of 1310 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1, and was able to maintain a stable reversible discharge capacity of 1109 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.5 A g-1 with coulombic efficiency reaching almost 100% for 200 cycles. The excellent rate and cycling capabilities can be ascribed to the hierarchical porosity of the one-dimensional Co9S8@NBNT internetworks, the incorporation of nitrogen doping, and the carbon nanotube confinement of the active cobalt sulfide nanowires offering a proximate electron pathway for the isolated nanoparticles and shielding of the cobalt sulfide nanowires from pulverization over long cycling periods.

Porous lithium cobalt oxide fabricated from metal-organic frameworks as a high-rate cathode for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Porous materials have many applications, such as energy storage, as catalysts and adsorption etc. Nevertheless, facile synthesis of porous materials remains a challenge. In this work, porous lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) is fabricated directly from Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, ZIF-67) and lithium salt via a facile solid state annealing approach. The temperature affect on the microstructure of LiCoO2 is also investigated. The as-prepared LiCoO2 shows a uniform porous structure. As a cathode for a lithium-ion battery (LIB), the LiCoO2 delivers excellent stability and superior rate capability. The as-prepared porous LiCoO2 delivers a reversible capacity of 106.5 mA h g-1 at 2C and with stable capacity retention of 96.4% even after 100 cycles. This work may provide an alternative pathway for the preparation of porous materials with broader applications.

Fluorine-free water-in-ionomer electrolytes for sustainable lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:The continuously increasing number and size of lithium-based batteries developed for large-scale applications raise serious environmental concerns. Herein, we address the issues related to electrolyte toxicity and safety by proposing a "water-in-ionomer" type of electrolyte which replaces organic solvents by water and expensive and toxic fluorinated lithium salts by a non-fluorinated, inexpensive and non-toxic superabsorbing ionomer, lithium polyacrylate. Interestingly, the electrochemical stability window of this electrolyte is extended greatly, even for high water contents. Particularly, the gel with 50?wt% ionomer exhibits an electrochemical stability window of 2.6?V vs. platinum and a conductivity of 6.5 mS cm-1 at 20?°C. Structural investigations suggest that the electrolytes locally self-organize and most likely switch local structures with the change of water content, leading to a 50% gel with good conductivity and elastic properties. A LiTi2(PO4)3/LiMn2O4 lithium-ion cell incorporating this electrolyte provided an average discharge voltage?>?1.5?V and a specific energy of 77?Wh?kg-1, while for an alternative cell chemistry, i.e., TiO2/LiMn2O4, a further enhanced average output voltage of 2.1?V and an initial specific energy of 124.2?Wh?kg-1 are achieved.

Anode-free sodium metal batteries as rising stars for lithium-ion alternatives.

Project description:With the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown, global supply chain crisis, and Russo-Ukrainian war, an energy-intensive society with sustainable, secure, affordable, and recyclable rechargeable batteries is increasingly out of reach. As demand soars, recent prototypes have shown that anode-free configurations, especially anode-free sodium metal batteries, offer realistic alternatives that are better than lithium-ion batteries in terms of energy density, cost, carbon footprint, and sustainability. This Perspective explores the current state of research on improving the performance of anode-free Na metal batteries from five key fields, as well as the impact on upstream industries compared to commercial batteries.

Amorphous cobalt silicate nanobelts@carbon composites as a stable anode material for lithium ion batteries.

Project description:During the past decade, tremendous attention has been given to the development of new electrode materials with high capacity to meet the requirements of electrode materials with high energy density in lithium ion batteries. Very recently, cobalt silicate has been proposed as a new type of high capacity anode material for lithium ion batteries. However, the bulky cobalt silicate demonstrates limited electrochemical performance. Nanostructure engineering and carbon coating represent two promising strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of electrode materials. Herein, we developed a template method for the synthesis of amorphous cobalt silicate nanobelts which can be coated with carbon through the deposition and thermal decomposition of phenol formaldehyde resin. Tested as an anode material, the amorphous cobalt silicate nanobelts@carbon composites exhibit a reversible high capacity of 745 mA h g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1, and a long life span of up to 1000 cycles with a stable capacity retention of 480 mA h g-1 at a current density of 500 mA g-1. The outstanding electrochemical performance of the composites indicates their high potential as an anode material for lithium ion batteries. The results here are expected to stimulate further research into transition metal silicate nanostructures for lithium ion battery applications.

Kirigami-based stretchable lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:We have produced stretchable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using the concept of kirigami, i.e., a combination of folding and cutting. The designated kirigami patterns have been discovered and implemented to achieve great stretchability (over 150%) to LIBs that are produced by standardized battery manufacturing. It is shown that fracture due to cutting and folding is suppressed by plastic rolling, which provides kirigami LIBs excellent electrochemical and mechanical characteristics. The kirigami LIBs have demonstrated the capability to be integrated and power a smart watch, which may disruptively impact the field of wearable electronics by offering extra physical and functionality design spaces.

Binder-Free, Thin-Film Ceramic-Coated Separators for Improved Safety of Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Separators play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Commercial polyolefin-based separators such as polyethylene (PE) still possess serious safety risks under abuse conditions because of their poor thermal stability. In this work, a novel type of binder-free, thin ceramic-coated separators with superior safety characteristics is demonstrated. A thin layer of alumina (Al2O3) is coated on commercial PE separators using the electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, impedance spectroscopy, and adhesion test techniques were employed to evaluate structure-property correlations. When compared to commercial slurry-coated separators, the EB-PVD-coated separators display (i) higher thermal stability, (ii) stronger ceramic-polymer adhesion, and (iii) competitive electrochemical performance of full LIB cells. Thermal stability, in terms of improved shutdown and breakdown characteristics of the separator, was studied using the in situ impedance technique up to 190 °C. In addition, the improved adhesion of the ceramic layer deposited on the PE separator was studied following the tape adhesion strength test. We prove that the thin (binder-free) ceramic layer coated by EB-PVD is far more effective in improving separator safety than those made using the conventional thick slurry coating.
