Birnessite: A New Oxidant for Green Rust Formation.

ABSTRACT: Iron and manganese are ubiquitous in the natural environment. FeII-FeIII layered double hydroxide, commonly called green rust (GR), and MnIII-MnIV birnessite (Bir) are also well known to be reactive solid compounds. Therefore, studying the chemical interactions between Fe and Mn species could contribute to understanding the interactions between their respective biogeochemical cycles. Moreover, ferromanganese solid compounds are potentially interesting materials for water treatment. Here, a {Fe(OH)2, FeIIaq} mixture was oxidized by Bir in sulphated aqueous media in the presence or absence of dissolved O2. In oxic conditions for an initial FeII/OH- ratio of 0.6, a single GR phase was obtained in a first step; the oxidation kinetics being faster than without Bir. In a second step, GR was oxidised into various final products, mainly in a spinel structure. A partial substitution of Fe by Mn species was suspected in both GR and the spinel. In anoxic condition, GR was also observed but other by-products were concomitantly formed. All the oxidation products were characterized by XRD, XPS, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Hence, oxidation of FeII species by Bir can be considered as a new chemical pathway for producing ferromanganese spinels. Furthermore, these results suggest that Bir may participate in the formation of GR minerals.

Project description:Green rusts (GR) are important drivers for trace metal and nutrient cycling in suboxic environments. We investigated whether green rusts would incorporate aluminum (Al) or other elements from naturally-formed clay minerals containing easily-weatherable clay minerals (e.g. mica, interlayered clays). We isolated the clay minerals from a Matapeake silt loam soil by removal of silt and sand, organic matter, and reducible oxides to study mechanisms of interaction between Fe(II) and soil-sourced clay minerals. We conducted batch Fe(II) sorption experiments at multiple near-neutral pHs (6.5-7.5) and reaction times (2 h-365 days). Mineral transformations were characterized by selective extractions, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fe X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyzed by shell-fitting and linear combination fitting (LCF) with natural and synthetic standards. Clay mineral fraction contained a mixture of quartz, kaolinite, interlayered vermiculite, mica, and chlorite with significant structural Fe (2.6% wt). Uptake of Fe(II) increased with pH and kinetics were rapid until 5 days, followed by slow continuous Fe(II) uptake. Citrate-bicarbonate desorption kinetics from Fe(II) sorbed clay released more Al and silicon (Si) compared with unreacted soil clay fraction whereas magnesium (Mg) and potassium (K) were unaffected. Citrate-bicarbonate extracted Fe contained more Fe(II) than an ideal GR with an Fe(II)/Fe(III) molar ratio of 5.50. Analysis of the Fe EXAFS by both LCF and shell fitting was best modeled as a combination of Fe(III)-clay reduction to Fe(II) and precipitation of GR and Fe(II)-Al LDH. After 7 days of Fe(II) sorption, LCF identified 55.2% total Fe in clay, 33.4% GR(Cl) and 11.4% Fe(II)-Al LDH. These results provide novel evidence of Fe(II)-Al LDHs precipitating on naturally-formed soil clay minerals as a minor phase to GR. The geochemical implications are that GRs formed in soils and sediments should be considered to have Al and Si as well as Mg substitutions affecting their structure and reactivity.

Project description:Chromium contamination is a serious environmental issue in areas affected by leather tanning and metal plating, and green rust sulfate has been tested extensively as a potential material for in situ chemical reduction of hexavalent chromium in groundwater. Reported products and mechanisms for the reaction have varied, most likely because of green rust's layered structure, as reduction at outer and interlayer surfaces might produce different reaction products with variable stabilities. Based on studies of Cr(III) oxidation by biogenic Mn (IV) oxides, Cr mobility in oxic soils is controlled by the solubility of the Cr(III)-bearing phase. Therefore, careful engineering of green rust properties, i.e., crystal/particle size, morphology, structure, and electron availability, is essential for its optimization as a remediation reagent. In the present study, pure green rust sulfate and green rust sulfate with Al, Mg and Zn substitutions were synthesized and reacted with identical chromate (CrO42-) solutions. The reaction products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy and treated with synthetic δ-MnO2 to assess how easily Cr(III) in the products could be oxidized. It was found that Mg substitution had the most beneficial effect on Cr lability in the product. Less than 2.5% of the Cr(III) present in the reacted Mg-GR was reoxidized by δ-MnO2 within 14 days, and the particle structure and Cr speciation observed during X-ray scattering and absorption analyses of this product suggested that Cr(VI) was reduced in its interlayer. Reduction in the interlayer lead to the linkage of newly-formed Cr(III) to hydroxyl groups in the adjacent octahedral layers, which resulted in increased structural coherency between these layers, distinctive rim domains, sequestration of Cr(III) in insoluble Fe oxide bonding environments resistant to reoxidation and partial transformation to Cr(III)-substituted feroxyhyte. Based on the results of this study of hexavalent chromium reduction by green rust sulfate and other studies, further improvements can also be made to this remediation technique by reacting chromate with a large excess of green rust sulfate, which provides excess Fe(II) that can catalyze transformation to more crystalline iron oxides, and synthesis of the reactant under alkaline conditions, which has been shown to favor chromium reduction in the interlayer of Fe(II)-bearing phyllosilicates.
