Complete mitochondrial genome of Tetraclita squamosa squamosa (Sessilia: Tetraclitidae) from China and phylogeny within Cirripedia.

ABSTRACT: Here we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Tetraclita squamosa squamosa, which is 15,191 bp in length with 67.20% AT content. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal-RNA genes and 22 transfer-RNA genes. All PCGs except nad4l in T. squamosa squamosa start with ATN, and terminated with a complete stop codon, except nad3. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial PCGs shows that T. squamosa squamosa is clustered with T. serrata into a branch (BP = 100). Our result is consistent with previous reports that genus Tetraclita and family Tetraclitidae are not monophyletic. This study contributes to further phylogenetic analysis within Cirripedia.

Project description:We determined the first mitochondrial genome of Tetraclita kuroshioensis from China. The mitochondrial genome of T. kuroshioensis was found to be 15,175 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. The longest non-coding region was 425 bp in length. Phylogenetic analysis showed that T. kuroshioensis clustered with T. serrata and then clustered with T. squamosa squamosa with high bootstrap value (BP = 100). In the future, sequencing of additional mitochondrial genomes should provide additional insights into the deep phylogeny of Cirripedia.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Tetraclita japonica (Crustacea: Maxillopoda: Sessilia) from Zhejiang (China) was presented (T. japonica ZJ). The genome is a circular molecule of 15,192 bp, all non-coding regions are 694 bp in length, and the longest one (307 bp) is located between 12S rRNA and trnK. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial PCGs shows that T. japonica ZJ clusters with T. japonica CN, and they grouped with T. japonica (BP = 100), then grouped with Tesseropora rosea, Tetraclita serrata, Tetraclita rufotincta, Epopella plicata, and Tetraclitella divisa successively . The phylogenetic tree indicated that the Balanidae and Archaeobalanidae are polyphyletic, while the Chthamalidae is monophyletic. The result can help us to understand the phylogenetic history within Sessilia.

The first mitochondrial genome of Megabalanus tintinnabulum (Sessilia: Balanidae) from China: phylogeny within Cirripedia based on mitochondrial genes.

Project description:Here we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Megabalanus tintinnabulum. The genome is 15,107?bp in length with a 67.35% AT content. It contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNAs genes, and 22 tRNAs. Both rRNAs are encoded on the light strand, as in the other crustacean and barnacle mitochondrial genomes. Besides five tRNAs are encoded on the light strand (nad1, trnV, trnL1, trnC, trnQ, and trnK). Only one PCG is encoded on the light strand (nad1), whereas the other 12 PCGs are located on the heavy strand, which is consistent with M. ajax. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial PCGs shows that M. tintinnabulum is clustered with M. ajax into a branch (BP = 100), and the group with M. volcano with high support. This study contributes to further phylogenetic analysis within Cirripedia.

The mitochondrial genome of Chthamalus malayensis (Sessilia: Chthamalidae) and its molecular phylogeny within Cirripedia.

Project description:Cirripedia is a lower crustacean that has an invaluable place in several aspects of intertidal ecology and anti-fouling research. In this study, we present the first mitochondrial genome of Chthamalus malayensis. The complete mitochondrial genome of C. malayensis is a circular molecule of 15,230 bp. In comparison to the pancrustacean ground pattern, the mitochondrial genome of C. malayensis has a deletion of the trnC gene. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial protein-coding genes showed that C. malayensis clusters with C. antennatus (BP = 98) and is grouped with C. challengeri, Octomeris sp. BKKC-2014, and Notochthamalus scabrosus. Further studies are needed to reveal the specific phylogenic relationships within Cirripedia.

Project description:The triangle barnacle Balanus trigonus Darwin, 1854, a cosmopolitan inhabitant of tropical and warm temperate seas, is a member of robust system for the study of evolutionary processes in the intertidal zone. The first mitochondrial genome of B. trigonus is presented. The complete mitochondrial genome of B. trigonus is a circular molecule of 15,560 bp, which encodes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. In comparison within Sessilia, the arrangement of the mitochondrial genome of B. trigonus is more similar to Megabalanus spp. than the congener Balanus balanus, which share a same inversion of a large gene block (P-nd4L-nd4-H-nd5-F). Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial PCGs reveals that B. trigonus clusters with Acasta Sulcata (BP = 100), then grouped with Megabalanus volcano and Megabalanus ajax with high support (BP = 90). In further, more data and research are needed to reveal the phylogeny within Cirripedia.

The first mitochondrial genome of Capitulum mitella (Crustacea: Cirripedia) from China: revealed the phylogenetic relationship within Thoracica.

Project description:Capitulum mitella (Crustacea: Cirripedia) is an important stalked barnacle. The first mitochondrial genome of C. mitella from China was presented, which is a circular molecule of 15,930 bp in length and AT content is 64.4%. It encodes 37 genes, including 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs, which is consistent with most barnacles species reported. There are 15 genes encoded on the light strand and 22 genes encoded on the heavy strand. Identical to most barnacles species reported, srRNA and lrRNA genes are adjacent and separated only by trnV gene. Phylogenetic trees showed that C. mitella clustered with Pollicipes polymerus, indicating Pollicipedidae is monophyletic. However, Scalpelliformes was not monophyletic from the phylogenetic tree. From the level of order, the Lepadiformes was located at the base of the phylogenetic tree, indicating that its divergence time was earlier than Scalpelliformes. The results provided more insights into phylogenetic consideration at the genomic level within superorder Thoracica.

Project description:The melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Diptera:Tephritidae) is an important invasive pest and distributed throughout tropical, subtropical countries and areas. In this study, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of the fly with 15, 685 base pair in length, which includes 37 genes (the large and small ribosomal RNA subunits, 22 transfer RNA genes, 13 genes encoding mitochondrial proteins) and a non-coding A + T-rich control region. Molecular phylogeny indicated that there was a high bootstrap value supported among Z. cucurbitae and Z. tau belonging to the Z. tau complex.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the hydrothermal vent barnacle Eochionelasmus ohtai (Cirripedia, Thoracica).

Project description:Thoracican barnacles are common in hydrothermal vent fields. Here, we characterized the first mitogenome of a hydrothermal vent barnacle. The mitogenome of Eochionelasmus ohtai was 15,585?bp in length and had the typical pancrustacean gene arrangement. Its protein-coding genes (PCGs) were very similar in terms of length, AT content, and start and stop codons to those of other thoracican species. The phylogenetic tree constructed with 13 PCGs divided balanomorph barnacles, including E. ohtai, into two clades. This will further our understanding of the evolution of hydrothermal vent barnacles using mitogenomes, although further mitogenomic analysis of undetermined taxa is required.

Project description:The family Catophragmidae is one of the lower balanomorphs from traditional and recent multiple mitochondrial and nuclear markers molecular analysis. Here, we characterized the first mitogenome of the catophragmid barnacle Catomerus polymerus, which was 15,446?bp in length with a 68.3% AT content. The mitogenome had the typical pancrustacean gene arrangement, which was identical to the mitogenome configurations of the chthamalid Octomeris sp. and pachylasmatoid Eochionelasmus ohtai. On the mitogenomic tree, the catophragmid Catomerus polymerus formed an independent branch that was basal to the members of the superfamilies Tetraclitoidea and Balanoidea, which was inconsistent with previous findings.

Project description:Here, we present the complete mitochondrial genome of Lophosquillia costata. The genome is 15,771 bp in length with a 68.07% AT content. It contains 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs genes, and 22 tRNAs. Both rRNAs are encoded on the light strand. Besides seven tRNAs are encoded on the light strand (trnY, trnQ, trnV, trnL1, trnP, trnH, and trnF), and four PCG (nad1, nad4l, nad4, and nad5) are encoded on the light strand, whereas the other nine PCGs are located on the heavy strand. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrial PCGs shows two distinct groups for Stomatopoda and Decapoda. Lophosquillia costata is found clustered with Oratosquilla oratoria into a branch (BP = 100), and they grouped with other species with high support (BP = 99) in the family Squillidae. Our results shall provide a better understanding in the evolutionary histories of the stomatopods.
