Robust Relative Error Estimation.

ABSTRACT: Relative error estimation has been recently used in regression analysis. A crucial issue of the existing relative error estimation procedures is that they are sensitive to outliers. To address this issue, we employ the ? -likelihood function, which is constructed through ? -cross entropy with keeping the original statistical model in use. The estimating equation has a redescending property, a desirable property in robust statistics, for a broad class of noise distributions. To find a minimizer of the negative ? -likelihood function, a majorize-minimization (MM) algorithm is constructed. The proposed algorithm is guaranteed to decrease the negative ? -likelihood function at each iteration. We also derive asymptotic normality of the corresponding estimator together with a simple consistent estimator of the asymptotic covariance matrix, so that we can readily construct approximate confidence sets. Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure. Real data analysis illustrates the usefulness of our proposed procedure.

Estimation of Natural Indirect Effects Robust to Unmeasured Confounding and Mediator Measurement Error.

Project description:The use of causal mediation analysis to evaluate the pathways by which an exposure affects an outcome is widespread in the social and biomedical sciences. Recent advances in this area have established formal conditions for identification and estimation of natural direct and indirect effects. However, these conditions typically involve stringent assumptions of no unmeasured confounding and that the mediator has been measured without error. These assumptions may fail to hold in many practical settings where mediation methods are applied. The goal of this article is two-fold. First, we formally establish that the natural indirect effect can in fact be identified in the presence of unmeasured exposure-outcome confounding provided there is no additive interaction between the mediator and unmeasured confounder(s). Second, we introduce a new estimator of the natural indirect effect that is robust to both classical measurement error of the mediator and unmeasured confounding of both exposure-outcome and mediator-outcome relations under certain no interaction assumptions. We provide formal proofs and a simulation study to illustrate our results. In addition, we apply the proposed methodology to data from the Harvard President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program in Nigeria.

Robust importance sampling for error estimation in the context of optimal Bayesian transfer learning.

Project description:Classification has been a major task for building intelligent systems because it enables decision-making under uncertainty. Classifier design aims at building models from training data for representing feature-label distributions-either explicitly or implicitly. In many scientific or clinical settings, training data are typically limited, which impedes the design and evaluation of accurate classifiers. Atlhough transfer learning can improve the learning in target domains by incorporating data from relevant source domains, it has received little attention for performance assessment, notably in error estimation. Here, we investigate knowledge transferability in the context of classification error estimation within a Bayesian paradigm. We introduce a class of Bayesian minimum mean-square error estimators for optimal Bayesian transfer learning, which enables rigorous evaluation of classification error under uncertainty in small-sample settings. Using Monte Carlo importance sampling, we illustrate the outstanding performance of the proposed estimator for a broad family of classifiers that span diverse learning capabilities.

Minimum-norm cortical source estimation in layered head models is robust against skull conductivity error.

Project description:The conductivity profile of the head has a major effect on EEG signals, but unfortunately the conductivity for the most important compartment, skull, is only poorly known. In dipole modeling studies, errors in modeled skull conductivity have been considered to have a detrimental effect on EEG source estimation. However, as dipole models are very restrictive, those results cannot be generalized to other source estimation methods. In this work, we studied the sensitivity of EEG and combined MEG+EEG source estimation to errors in skull conductivity using a distributed source model and minimum-norm (MN) estimation. We used a MEG/EEG modeling set-up that reflected state-of-the-art practices of experimental research. Cortical surfaces were segmented and realistically-shaped three-layer anatomical head models were constructed, and forward models were built with Galerkin boundary element method while varying the skull conductivity. Lead-field topographies and MN spatial filter vectors were compared across conductivities, and the localization and spatial spread of the MN estimators were assessed using intuitive resolution metrics. The results showed that the MN estimator is robust against errors in skull conductivity: the conductivity had a moderate effect on amplitudes of lead fields and spatial filter vectors, but the effect on corresponding morphologies was small. The localization performance of the EEG or combined MEG+EEG MN estimator was only minimally affected by the conductivity error, while the spread of the estimate varied slightly. Thus, the uncertainty with respect to skull conductivity should not prevent researchers from applying minimum norm estimation to EEG or combined MEG+EEG data. Comparing our results to those obtained earlier with dipole models shows that general judgment on the performance of an imaging modality should not be based on analysis with one source estimation method only.

High-dimensional bolstered error estimation.

Project description:In small-sample settings, bolstered error estimation has been shown to perform better than cross-validation and competitively with bootstrap with regard to various criteria. The key issue for bolstering performance is the variance setting for the bolstering kernel. Heretofore, this variance has been determined in a non-parametric manner from the data. Although bolstering based on this variance setting works well for small feature sets, results can deteriorate for high-dimensional feature spaces.This article computes an optimal kernel variance depending on the classification rule, sample size, model and feature space, both the original number and the number remaining after feature selection. A key point is that the optimal variance is robust relative to the model. This allows us to develop a method for selecting a suitable variance to use in real-world applications where the model is not known, but the other factors in determining the optimal kernel are known.Companion website at http://compbio.tgen.org/paper_supp/high_dim_bolstering.edward@mail.ece.tamu.edu.

Error Bounds for Dynamical Spectral Estimation.

Project description:Dynamical spectral estimation is a well-established numerical approach for estimating eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Markov transition operator from trajectory data. Although the approach has been widely applied in biomolecular simulations, its error properties remain poorly understood. Here we analyze the error of a dynamical spectral estimation method called "the variational approach to conformational dynamics" (VAC). We bound the approximation error and estimation error for VAC estimates. Our analysis establishes VAC's convergence properties and suggests new strategies for tuning VAC to improve accuracy.

Conditional Density Estimation in Measurement Error Problems.

Project description:This paper is motivated by a wide range of background correction problems in gene array data analysis, where the raw gene expression intensities are measured with error. Estimating a conditional density function from the contaminated expression data is a key aspect of statistical inference and visualization in these studies. We propose re-weighted deconvolution kernel methods to estimate the conditional density function in an additive error model, when the error distribution is known as well as when it is unknown. Theoretical properties of the proposed estimators are investigated with respect to the mean absolute error from a "double asymptotic" view. Practical rules are developed for the selection of smoothing-parameters. Simulated examples and an application to an Illumina bead microarray study are presented to illustrate the viability of the methods.

Fragment-based error estimation in biomolecular modeling.

Project description:Computer simulations are becoming an increasingly more important component of drug discovery. Computational models are now often able to reproduce and sometimes even predict outcomes of experiments. Still, potential energy models such as force fields contain significant amounts of bias and imprecision. We have shown how even small uncertainties in potential energy models can propagate to yield large errors, and have devised some general error-handling protocols for biomolecular modeling with imprecise energy functions. Herein we discuss those protocols within the contexts of protein-ligand binding and protein folding.

Wind power error estimation in resource assessments.

Project description:Estimating the power output is one of the elements that determine the techno-economic feasibility of a renewable project. At present, there is a need to develop reliable methods that achieve this goal, thereby contributing to wind power penetration. In this study, we propose a method for wind power error estimation based on the wind speed measurement error, probability density function, and wind turbine power curves. This method uses the actual wind speed data without prior statistical treatment based on 28 wind turbine power curves, which were fitted by Lagrange's method, to calculate the estimate wind power output and the corresponding error propagation. We found that wind speed percentage errors of 10% were propagated into the power output estimates, thereby yielding an error of 5%. The proposed error propagation complements the traditional power resource assessments. The wind power estimation error also allows us to estimate intervals for the power production leveled cost or the investment time return. The implementation of this method increases the reliability of techno-economic resource assessment studies.

Sources of Error in IRT Trait Estimation.

Project description:In item response theory (IRT), item response probabilities are a function of item characteristics and latent trait scores. Within an IRT framework, trait score misestimation results from (a) random error, (b) the trait score estimation method, (c) errors in item parameter estimation, and (d) model misspecification. This study investigated the relative effects of these error sources on the bias and confidence interval coverage rates for trait scores. Our results showed that overall, bias values were close to 0, and coverage rates were fairly accurate for central trait scores and trait estimation methods that did not use a strong Bayesian prior. However, certain types of model misspecifications were found to produce severely biased trait estimates with poor coverage rates, especially at extremes of the latent trait continuum. It is demonstrated that biased trait estimates result from estimated item response functions (IRFs) that exhibit systematic conditional bias, and that these conditionally biased IRFs may not be detected by model or item fit indices. One consequence of these results is that certain types of model misspecifications can lead to estimated trait scores that are nonlinearly related to the data-generating latent trait. Implications for item and trait score estimation and interpretation are discussed.
