Evaluating the Positive Drinking Consequences Questionnaire: Support for a Four-Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance.

ABSTRACT: The 14-item Positive Drinking Consequences Questionnaire (PDCQ) was developed to assess experienced positive drinking consequences. The present study sought to advance the psychometric evaluation of the PDCQ via exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, measurement invariance, criterion-related validity, and internal consistency. Participants were 1,088 traditional-age college students (81% female) who reported drinking in the past month. Exploratory factor analysis supported a four-factor model (i.e. Sociability, Tension Reduction, Liquid Courage, and Sexual Enhancement), and the confirmatory factor analysis indicated the four factors loaded on a higher-order factor ("PDCQ"). Invariance testing supported invariance for the PDCQ across gender. The PDCQ was positively associated with alcohol use and alcohol-related negative consequences, and negatively associated with protective behavioral strategies. Finally, the four factors of the PDCQ were discriminant from positive expectancies. Collectively, positive drinking consequences appear to be more nuanced than originally conceptualized. Evaluation of specific types of positive drinking consequences may assist in more precise prevention and intervention efforts in the future.

Project description:ObjectiveThe Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire (YAACQ) was designed to measure the various domains of alcohol-related problems experienced by emerging adults (EAs), but has primarily been used in college samples and it remains unclear whether the psychometric properties of the YAACQ function similarly in racially and economically diverse populations. The present study assessed the factor structure and evaluated measurement invariance, latent mean differences, and correlates of the 48-item eight-factor YAACQ across college status, race, and childhood socioeconomic status (SES).MethodEAs ages 21.5-25 (N = 602; 57.3% female, 47.0% White, 41.5 % Black, 35.4% noncollege EAs) who consumed 3/4 + alcoholic beverages (for women/men) at least twice in the previous month completed measures of alcohol use, alcohol-related consequences and demographics.ResultsConfirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the 48-item eight-factor structure across the entire sample. However, one item related to academic achievement was predictably endorsed by few noncollege EAs and thus, was dropped. Multiple-group CFA demonstrated measurement invariance of a revised 47-item eight-factor YAACQ across college status, race, and childhood SES. Assessment of latent mean differences revealed that noncollege EAs reported more alcohol-related consequences overall, compared to college students, including greater endorsement of severe problem domains. White EAs reported more total alcohol-related consequences relative to Black EAs, and EAs of low childhood SES reported more total alcohol-related consequences compared to those of high childhood SES. Furthermore, all eight alcohol consequence factors demonstrated concurrent associations with weekly alcohol use, binge drinking, and high intensity drinking within each subgroup.ConclusionsFindings suggest that the YAACQ is a psychometrically robust measure of alcohol-related consequences across demographic groups. Project description:BackgroundThe Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire (4DSQ) is a self-report questionnaire measuring distress, depression, anxiety and somatization with separate scales. The 4DSQ has extensively been validated in clinical samples, especially from primary care settings. Information about measurement properties and normative data in the general population was lacking. In a Dutch general population sample we examined the 4DSQ scales' structure, the scales' reliability and measurement invariance with respect to gender, age and education, the scales' score distributions across demographic categories, and normative data.Methods4DSQ data were collected in a representative Dutch Internet panel. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the scales' structure. Reliability was examined by Cronbach's alpha, and coefficients omega-total and omega-hierarchical. Differential item functioning (DIF) analysis was used to evaluate measurement invariance across gender, age and education.ResultsThe total response rate was 82.4 % (n = 5273/6399). The depression scale proved to be unidimensional. The other scales were best represented as bifactor models consisting of a large general factor and one or more smaller specific factors. The general factors accounted for more than 95 % of the reliable variance of the scales. Reliability was high (≥0.85) by all estimates. The distress-, depression- and anxiety scales were invariant across gender, age and education. The somatization scale demonstrated some lack of measurement invariance as a result of decreased thresholds for some of the items in young people (16-24 years) and increased thresholds in elderly people (65+ years). The somatization scale was invariant regarding gender and education. The 4DSQ scores varied significantly across demographic categories, but the explained variance was small (<6 %). Normative data were generated for gender and age categories. Approximately 17 % of the participants scored above average on de distress scale, whereas 12 % scored above average on de somatization scale. Percentages of people scoring high enough on depression or anxiety as to suspect the presence of depressive or anxiety disorder were 4.1 and 2.5 respectively.ConclusionsEvidence supports reliability and measurement invariance of the 4DSQ in the general Dutch population. The normative data provided in this study can be used to compare a subject's 4DSQ scores with a general population reference group.
