Dataset of the land use pattern optimization in Horqin Sandy Land.

ABSTRACT: This dataset uses downloadable public datasets such as the Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) to account for ecosystem services such as net primary productivity (NPP) in Horqin Sandy Land in 2015 through ecological process models. The land use pattern of Horqin Sandy Land under three scenarios in 2025 was obtained by CLUMondo model. Based on the spatial distribution of ecosystem services in Horqin Sandy Land in 2015, the land use under three scenarios in 2025 was used as a variable to obtain the optimal pattern of ecosystem services in Horqin Sandy Land through Netica software. This dataset combines land use simulation with ecosystem service optimization, and can provide reference for decision makers and stakeholders to formulate ecosystem governance policies [1].

Project description:Sandy range land refers to a major component of grassland area types in the semi-arid area of northern China. Monitoring of vegetation and land surface temperature (LST) using remote sensing technology can help determine the degree of desertification in a regional and/or sub regional scale, as in the Horqin Sandy Land selected in this study. Correlation analysis was performed to examine the relationship between the fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) and the LST within one growing season (from May to August 2017), at different spatial scales. The results showed that the FVC increased from 0.12 in May to 0.29 in August, and the LST increased first and then declined. The highest LST was 41.68 °C in July, while the lowest was 28.62 °C in August. At the grid scale, the LST increased first and then declined with the increase of the FVC on 25 May, 10 June, and 29 August; the FVC ranged from 0.29-0.38, 0.27-0.32, and 0.29-0.38 with the preference of the 'turning point', respectively. A negative correlation was identified between the FVC and the LST and without any 'turning point' in the fitting curve on 28 July. The correlation between FVC and LST complied with the grid scale at the sample area scale. The coupling analysis of landscape pattern expressed by FVC and LST showed that, the landscape evenness, Euclidean nearest neighbor distance, and landscape splitting degree all showed strong coupling correlation in any study period (P). The landscape aggregation of FVC and LST showed a good coupling at the relatively high and low air temperature conditions of P1 and P3. Landscape contagion showed a good coupling between FVC and LST at relatively moderate air temperature condition of P1 and P4. Air temperature conditions and characteristics of vegetation coverage should be considered for a more targeted analysis when analyzing the relationship between FVC and LST and attention should be paid to the timing and type of study area in practical application.

Project description:Reforestation of native shrub on shifting sand dunes has been widely used for desertification control in semi-arid grassland in Northeast China. Previous studies have confirmed that plantation establishment facilitates fixing sand dunes, restoring vegetation, and improving soil properties, but very few have focused on the response of the soil fungal community. In this study, a chronosequence of Caragana microphylla (CM) shrub sand-fixation plantations (8-, 19-, and 33-year-old), non-vegetated shifting sand dunes (0 years), and adjacent natural CM forests (NCFs; 50-year-old) in the Horqin sandy land were selected as experimental sites. Soil properties including enzymatic activities were determined, and the composition and structure of the soil fungal community were investigated using the Illumina MiSeq sequencing technique based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA. This study aimed to (1) describe the response of the soil fungal community to revegetation onto a moving sand dune by planting a native shrub plantation; (2) determine the main soil factors driving the succession of the fungal community; and (3) discuss whether the soil fungal community can be restored to its original state by reforestation. The reforestation of CM significantly ameliorated soil properties, increased soil fungal diversity, and altered the composition and structure of the soil fungal community. Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Zoopagomycota were the dominant phyla in all sites. Ascomycota did not respond to plantation development, whereas the other two dominant phyla linearly increased or decreased with the plantation age. The relative abundance of dominant genera varied with sites and showed a waning and waxing characteristic. The composition and structure of the soil fungal community in the 33-year CM plantation were very close to that of the NCF, indicating the restorability of the soil fungal community. The succession of the soil fungal community was directly driven by soil properties, of which soil moisture, organic matter, total N, urease, and protease were the main affecting factors.

Project description:Land Use Land Cover (LULC) classification is pivotal to sustainable environment and natural resource management. It is critical in planning, monitoring, and management programs at various local and national levels. Monitoring changes in LULC patterns over time is crucial for understanding evolving landscapes. Traditionally, LULC classification has been achieved through satellite data by remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS) techniques, machine learning classifiers, and deep learning models. Semantic segmentation, a technique for assigning land cover classes to individual pixels in an image, is commonly employed for LULC mapping. In recent years, the deep learning revolution, particularly Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), has reshaped the field of computer vision and LULC classification. Deep architectures have consistently outperformed traditional methods, offering greater accuracy and efficiency. However, the availability of high-quality datasets has been a limiting factor. Bridging the gap between modern computer vision and remote sensing data analysis can revolutionize our understanding of the environment and drive breakthroughs in urban planning and ecosystem change research. The "Sen-2 LULC Dataset" has been created to facilitate this convergence. This dataset comprises of 213,761 pre-processed 10 m resolution images representing seven LULC classes. These classes encompass water bodies, dense forests, sparse forests, barren land, built-up areas, agricultural land, and fallow land. Importantly, each image may contain multiple coexisting land use and land cover classes, mirroring the real-world complexity of landscapes. The dataset is derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery sourced from the Copernicus Open Access Hub (https://scihub.copernicus.eu/) platform. It includes spectral bands B4, B3, and B2, corresponding to red, green, and blue (RGB) channels, and offers a spectral resolution of 10 m. The dataset also provides an equal number of mask images. Structured into six folders, the dataset offers training, testing, and validation sets for images and masks. Researchers across various domains can leverage this resource to advance LULC classification in the context of the Indian region. Additionally, it catalyzes fostering collaboration between remote sensing and computer vision communities, enabling novel insights into environmental dynamics and urban planning challenges.
