The crystal structures of magnesium hydrogen citrate dihydrate, Mg(HC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>O<sub>7</sub>)(H<sub>2</sub>O)<sub>2</sub>, (I), and bis-(di-hydrogen citrato)magnesium, Mg(H<sub>2</sub>C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>O<sub>7</sub>)<sub>2</sub>, (II), have been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques.
