Di- and Tetracyano Substituted Pyrene-Fused Pyrazaacenes -Aggregation in the Solid State.

ABSTRACT: Five different di- and tetracyano substituted pyrene-fused pyrazaacenes have been synthesized and studied as potential electron acceptors in the solid state. Therefore, from all compounds single crystals were grown and the crystal packing studied by DFT calculations (transfer integrals and reorganization energies) to get an insight in possible use for semiconducting charge transport.

Project description:The synthesis, single-crystal structures and chromic behaviour of three related Schiff bases, namely, (E)-2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-{[(4-fluorophenyl)imino]methyl}phenol, C21H26FNO, 1, (E)-2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-{[(4-chlorophenyl)imino]methyl}phenol, C21H26ClNO, 2, and (E)-6-{[(4-bromophenyl)imino]methyl}-2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, C21H26BrNO, 3, are reported. Two polymorphs of 1 were obtained, which were found to have different photochromic properties. Schiff bases 2 and 3 were found to be isostructural and underwent a phase transition upon cooling which was attributed to the dynamic disorder in one of the tert-butyl groups resolving at low temperature. All of the structures were found to exist in the enol rather than the keto form based on the C-O(H) and imine C=N bond lengths, and contained an intramolecular O-H...N hydrogen bond alongside weaker intermolecular C-H...O contacts.

Three-Dimensional Pyrene-Fused N-Heteroacenes.

Project description:Four three-dimensional (3D) pyrene-fused N-heteroacenes (P1-P4) are designed and synthesized. From P1 to P4, their lengths are extended in an iterative way, where the thiadiazole unit can be reduced to diamine and the obtained diamines can be further condensed with the diketones with a thiadiazole unit. Compared to their two-dimensional counterparts, the solubility of these 3D pyrene-fused N-heteroacenes is improved by this 3D covalent linkage with two-dimensional units. The diameters of P1-P4 are 3.66, 6.06, 8.48 and 10.88 nm, respectively, and these 3D molecules are characterized by 1H, 13C and 2D NMR, MS, UV-vis, PL and CV spectra. Our strategy shows a promising way to large 3D pyrene-fused N-heteroacenes.

Vinylpyrroles: solid-state structures and aggregation-induced emission properties.

Project description:An aggregation-induced emission chromophore, vinylpyrrole, was prepared from a formylpyrrole derivative, Meldrum's acid, and 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid. The optical properties of the chromophore both in the solution and solid states were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the dimethylbarbituric acid adduct formed a J-aggregate in the solid and resulted in higher fluorescence quantum yield compared to the Meldrum's acid adduct. Emission enhancement was found to occur by the restriction of molecular rotation in the solid state.

Singlet Fission in Pyrene-Fused Azaacene Dimers.

Project description:Singlet fission has emerged as a promising strategy to avoid the loss of extra energy through thermalization in solar cells. A family of dimers consisting of nitrogen-doped pyrene-fused acenes that undergo singlet fission with triplet quantum yields as high as 125 % are presented. They provide new perspectives for nitrogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and for the design of new materials for singlet fission.

Synthesis and solid-state characterisation of 4-substituted methylidene oxindoles.

Project description:Background4-substituted methylidene oxindoles are pharmacologically important. Detailed analysis and comparison of all the interactions present in crystal structures is necessary to understand how these structures arise. The XPac procedure allows comparison of complete crystal structures of related families of compounds to identify assemblies that are mainly the result of close-packing as well as networks of directed interactions.ResultsFive 4-substituted methylidene oxindoles have been synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation of oxindole with para-substituted aromatic aldehydes and were characterized in the solid state by x-ray crystallography. Hence, the structures of (3E)-3-(4-Bromobenzylidene)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one, 3a, (3E)-3-(4-Chlorobenzylidene)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one, 3b, (3E)-3-(4-Methoxybenzylidene)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one, 3c, (3E)-3-(4-Methylbenzylidene)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one, 3d and (3E)-3-(4-Nitrobenzylidene)-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one, 3e, were elucidated using single crystal X-ray crystallography.ConclusionsA hydrogen bonded dimer molecular assembly or supramolecular construct was identified in all the crystal structures examined along with a further four 1D supramolecular constructs which were common to at least two of the family of structures studied. The 1D supramolecular constructs indicate that once the obvious strong interaction is satisfied to form hydrogen bonded dimer it is the conventionally weaker interactions, such as steric bulk and edge-to-face interactions which compete to influence the final structure formation.

Making of a single solid-state nanopore on the wall of fused silica capillary.

Project description:A channel of nanometre size is an important platform for nanofluidic investigations. In this work, we show that a single solid nanopore can be generated by hydrogen fluoride etching of the outside wall of commercially available fused silica capillary. The geometry, size and the singleness were characterized by various means, including scanning electron microscope, electrolyte conductance measurement and a fluorescent microscope. The generation principle is also discussed. The nanopore thus generated features in low aspect ratio and exhibits typical nanofluidic effects such as ion concentration polarization, rectification and molecular translocation.

Insights into protein misfolding and aggregation enabled by solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Project description:The aggregation of proteins and peptides into a variety of insoluble, and often non-native, aggregated states plays a central role in many devastating diseases. Analogous processes undermine the efficacy of polypeptide-based biological pharmaceuticals, but are also being leveraged in the design of biologically inspired self-assembling materials. This Trends article surveys the essential contributions made by recent solid-state NMR (ssNMR) studies to our understanding of the structural features of polypeptide aggregates, and how such findings are informing our thinking about the molecular mechanisms of misfolding and aggregation. A central focus is on disease-related amyloid fibrils and oligomers involved in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's disease. SSNMR-enabled structural and dynamics-based findings are surveyed, along with a number of resulting emerging themes that appear common to different amyloidogenic proteins, such as their compact alternating short-β-strand/β-arc amyloid core architecture. Concepts, methods, future prospects and challenges are discussed.

Thermally Induced Synthesis of Anthracene-, Pyrene- and Naphthalene-Fused Porphyrins.

Project description:The synthesis of π-extended porphyrins containing anthracenyl moieties still represents an important challenge. Here, we report on the synthesis of a series of unsubstituted naphthyl-, pyrenyl- and anthracenyl-fused zinc porphyrin derivatives. To this aim, meso-substitued porphyrins are synthesized and the fusion of the PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon) on the β-positions are performed through thermally induced dehydro-aromatization. The fused zinc-porphyrin derivatives are fully characterized and their optical absorption and photoluminescence properties are reported. We also demonstrate that zinc can be removed from the porphyrin core, giving rise to pure C, H, N materials. This work constitutes the first step towards the synthesis of the fully-fused tetra-anthracenylporphyrin.

Low-temperature all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries based on a di-cross-linked starch solid electrolyte.

Project description:The preparation of a low-temperature solid electrolyte is a challenge for the commercialization of the all-solid-state lithium-ion battery (ASSLIB). Here we report a starch-based solid electrolyte that displays phenomenal electrochemical properties below room temperature (RT). The starch host of the electrolyte is synthesized by two cross-linking reactions, which provide sufficient and orderly binding sites for the lithium salt to dissolve. At 25 °C, the solid electrolyte has exceptional ionic conductivity (σ, 3.10 × 10-4 S cm-1), lithium-ion transfer number (t +, 0.82) and decomposition potential (dP, 4.91 V). At -20 °C, it still has outstanding σ (3.10 × 10-5 S cm-1), t + (0.72) and dP (5.50 V). The LiFePO4 ASSLIB assembled with the electrolyte exhibits unique specific capacity and long cycling life below RT, and the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 ASSLIB can operate at 4.3 V and 0 °C. This work provides a solution to solve the current challenges of ASSLIBs to widen their scope of applications.
