Field Demonstration of a Distributed Microsensor Network for Chemical Detection.

ABSTRACT: We have developed the ABEAM-15, a custom-built multiplexed reflectance device for the detection of vapor phase and aerosolized chemical plumes. The instrument incorporates fifteen individual sensing elements, has wireless communications, offers support for a battery pack, and is capable of both live and fully autonomous operation. Two housing options have been fabricated: a compact open housing for indoor use and a larger weather-sealed housing for outdoor use. Previously developed six-plex analysis algorithms are extended to 15-plex format and implemented on a laptop computer. We report the results of recent outdoor field trials with this instrument in Denver, CO in a stadium security scenario. Through software, the wireless modules on each instrument were configured to form a six-instrument, star-point topology, distributed microsensor network with live reporting and real-time data analysis. The network was tested with aerosols of methyl salicylate.

Real-Time Edge Neuromorphic Tasting From Chemical Microsensor Arrays.

Project description:Liquid analysis is key to track conformity with the strict process quality standards of sectors like food, beverage, and chemical manufacturing. In order to analyse product qualities online and at the very point of interest, automated monitoring systems must satisfy strong requirements in terms of miniaturization, energy autonomy, and real time operation. Toward this goal, we present the first implementation of artificial taste running on neuromorphic hardware for continuous edge monitoring applications. We used a solid-state electrochemical microsensor array to acquire multivariate, time-varying chemical measurements, employed temporal filtering to enhance sensor readout dynamics, and deployed a rate-based, deep convolutional spiking neural network to efficiently fuse the electrochemical sensor data. To evaluate performance we created MicroBeTa (Microsensor Beverage Tasting), a new dataset for beverage classification incorporating 7 h of temporal recordings performed over 3 days, including sensor drifts and sensor replacements. Our implementation of artificial taste is 15× more energy efficient on inference tasks than similar convolutional architectures running on other commercial, low power edge-AI inference devices, achieving over 178× lower latencies than the sampling period of the sensor readout, and high accuracy (97%) on a single Intel Loihi neuromorphic research processor included in a USB stick form factor.

Metamaterial-enhanced near-field readout platform for passive microsensor tags.

Project description:Radiofrequency identification (RFID), particularly passive RFID, is extensively employed in industrial applications to track and trace products, assets, and material flows. The ongoing trend toward increasingly miniaturized RFID sensor tags is likely to continue as technology advances, although miniaturization presents a challenge with regard to the communication coverage area. Recently, efforts in applying metamaterials in RFID technology to increase power transfer efficiency through their unique capacity for electromagnetic wave manipulation have been reported. In particular, metamaterials are being increasingly applied in far-field RFID system applications. Here, we report the development of a magnetic metamaterial and local field enhancement package enabling a marked boost in near-field magnetic strength, ultimately yielding a dramatic increase in the power transfer efficiency between reader and tag antennas. The application of the proposed magnetic metamaterial and local field enhancement package to near-field RFID technology, by offering high power transfer efficiency and a larger communication coverage area, yields new opportunities in the rapidly emerging Internet of Things (IoT) era.

Distributed Representation of Chemical Fragments.

Project description:This article describes an unsupervised machine learning method for computing distributed vector representation of molecular fragments. These vectors encode fragment features in a continuous high-dimensional space and enable similarity computation between individual fragments, even for small fragments with only two heavy atoms. The method is based on a word embedding algorithm borrowed from natural language processing field, and approximately 6 million unlabeled PubChem chemicals were used for training. The resulting dense fragment vectors are in contrast to the traditional sparse "one-hot" fragment representation and capture rich relational structure in the fragment space. The vectors of small linear fragments were averaged to yield distributed vectors of bigger fragments and molecules, which were used for different tasks, e.g., clustering, ligand recall, and quantitative structure-activity relationship modeling. The distributed vectors were found to be better at clustering ring systems and recall of kinase ligands as compared to standard binary fingerprints. This work demonstrates unsupervised learning of fragment chemistry from large sets of unlabeled chemical structures and subsequent application to supervised training on relatively small data sets of labeled chemicals.

Distributed clone detection in static wireless sensor networks: random walk with network division.

Project description:Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are vulnerable to clone attacks or node replication attacks as they are deployed in hostile and unattended environments where they are deprived of physical protection, lacking physical tamper-resistance of sensor nodes. As a result, an adversary can easily capture and compromise sensor nodes and after replicating them, he inserts arbitrary number of clones/replicas into the network. If these clones are not efficiently detected, an adversary can be further capable to mount a wide variety of internal attacks which can emasculate the various protocols and sensor applications. Several solutions have been proposed in the literature to address the crucial problem of clone detection, which are not satisfactory as they suffer from some serious drawbacks. In this paper we propose a novel distributed solution called Random Walk with Network Division (RWND) for the detection of node replication attack in static WSNs which is based on claimer-reporter-witness framework and combines a simple random walk with network division. RWND detects clone(s) by following a claimer-reporter-witness framework and a random walk is employed within each area for the selection of witness nodes. Splitting the network into levels and areas makes clone detection more efficient and the high security of witness nodes is ensured with moderate communication and memory overheads. Our simulation results show that RWND outperforms the existing witness node based strategies with moderate communication and memory overheads.

Demonstration of Complementary Ternary Graphene Field-Effect Transistors.

Project description:Strong demand for power reduction in state-of-the-art semiconductor devices calls for novel devices and architectures. Since ternary logic architecture can perform the same function as binary logic architecture with a much lower device density and higher information density, a switch device suitable for the ternary logic has been pursued for several decades. However, a single device that satisfies all the requirements for ternary logic architecture has not been demonstrated. We demonstrated a ternary graphene field-effect transistor (TGFET), showing three discrete current states in one device. The ternary function was achieved by introducing a metal strip to the middle of graphene channel, which created an N-P-N or P-N-P doping pattern depending on the work function of the metal. In addition, a standard ternary inverter working at room temperature has been achieved by modulating the work function of the metal in a graphene channel. The feasibility of a ternary inverter indicates that a general ternary logic architecture can be realized using complementary TGFETs. This breakthrough will provide a key stepping-stone for an extreme-low-power computing technology.

Well-scale demonstration of distributed pressure sensing using fiber-optic DAS and DTS.

Project description:In this study, we used data from optical fiber-based Distributed Acoustic Sensor (DAS) and Distributed Temperature Sensor (DTS) to estimate pressure along the fiber. A machine learning workflow was developed and demonstrated using experimental datasets from gas-water flow tests conducted in a 5163-ft deep well instrumented with DAS, DTS, and four downhole pressure gauges. The workflow is successfully demonstrated on two experimental datasets, corresponding to different gas injection volumes, backpressure, injection methods, and water circulation rates. The workflow utilizes the random forest algorithm and involves a two-step process for distributed pressure prediction. In the first step, single-depth predictive modeling is performed to explore the underlying relationship between the DAS (in seven different frequency bands), DTS, and the gauge pressures at the four downhole locations. The single-depth analysis showed that the low-frequency components (< 2 Hz) of the DAS data, when combined with DTS, consistently demonstrate a superior capability in predicting pressure as compared to the higher frequency bands for both the datasets achieving an average coefficient of determination (or R2) of 0.96. This can be explained by the unique characteristic of low-frequency DAS which is sensitive to both the strain and temperature perturbations. In the second step, the DTS and the low-frequency DAS data from two gauge locations were used to predict pressures at different depths. The distributed pressure modeling achieved an average R2 of 0.95 and an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 24 psi for the two datasets across the depths analyzed, demonstrating the distributed pressure measurement capability using the proposed workflow. A majority of the current DAS applications rely on the higher frequency components. This study presents a novel application of the low-frequency DAS combined with DTS for distributed pressure measurement.

Time-domain demonstration of distributed distortion-product otoacoustic emission components.

Project description:Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were measured in rabbits as time waveforms by employing a phase-rotation technique to cancel all components in the final average, except the 2f1-f2 DPOAE. Subsequent filtering allowed the DPOAE waveform to be clearly visualized in the time domain. In most conditions, f2 was turned off for 6 ms, which produced a gap so that the DPOAE was no longer generated. These procedures allowed the DPOAE onset as well as the decay during the gap to be observed in the time domain. DPOAEs were collected with L1 = L2 = 65-dB sound pressure level primary-tone levels for f2/f1 ratios from 1.25 to 1.01 in 0.02 steps. Findings included the appearance of complex onsets and decays for the DPOAE time waveforms as the f2/f1 ratio was decreased and the DPOAE level was reduced. These complexities were unaffected by interference tones (ITs) near the DPOAE frequency place (fdp), but could be removed by ITs presented above f2, which also increased DPOAE levels. Similar outcomes were observed when DPOAEs were measured at a sharp notch in the DPOAE level as a function of the f2 primary tone frequency, i.e., DP-gram. Both findings were consistent with the hypothesis that the DPOAE-ratio function, and some notches in the DP-gram, are caused by interactions of distributed DPOAE components with unique phases.

Feasibility demonstration of a massively parallelizable optical near-field sensor for sub-wavelength defect detection and imaging.

Project description:To detect and resolve sub-wavelength features at optical frequencies, beyond the diffraction limit, requires sensors that interact with the electromagnetic near-field of those features. Most instruments operating in this modality scan a single detector element across the surface under inspection because the scattered signals from a multiplicity of such elements would end up interfering with each other. However, an alternative massively parallelized configuration, capable of interrogating multiple adjacent areas of the surface at the same time, was proposed in 2002. Full physics simulations of the photonic antenna detector element that enables this instrument, show that using conventional red laser light (in the 600 nm range) the detector magnifies the signal from an 8 nm particle by up to 1.5 orders of magnitude. The antenna is a shaped slot element in a 60 nm silver film. The ability of this detector element to resolve λ/78 objects is confirmed experimentally at radio frequencies by fabricating an artificial material structure that mimics the optical permittivity of silver scaled to 2 GHz, and "cutting" into it the slot antenna. The experimental set-up is also used to demonstrate the imaging of a patterned surface in which the critical dimensions of the pattern are λ/22 in size.

Label-free detection of DNA hybridization using carbon nanotube network field-effect transistors.

Project description:We report carbon nanotube network field-effect transistors (NTNFETs) that function as selective detectors of DNA immobilization and hybridization. NTNFETs with immobilized synthetic oligonucleotides have been shown to specifically recognize target DNA sequences, including H63D single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) discrimination in the HFE gene, responsible for hereditary hemochromatosis. The electronic responses of NTNFETs upon single-stranded DNA immobilization and subsequent DNA hybridization events were confirmed by using fluorescence-labeled oligonucleotides and then were further explored for label-free DNA detection at picomolar to micromolar concentrations. We have also observed a strong effect of DNA counterions on the electronic response, thus suggesting a charge-based mechanism of DNA detection using NTNFET devices. Implementation of label-free electronic detection assays using NTNFETs constitutes an important step toward low-cost, low-complexity, highly sensitive and accurate molecular diagnostics.

Going beyond 1000000 resolved points in a Brillouin distributed fiber sensor: theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration.

Project description:Distributed fiber sensing possesses the unique ability to measure the distributed profile of an environmental quantity along many tens of kilometers with spatial resolutions in the meter or even centimeter scale. This feature enables distributed sensors to provide a large number of resolved points using a single optical fiber. However, in current systems, this number has remained constrained to a few hundreds of thousands due to the finite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the measurements, which imposes significant challenges in the development of more performing sensors. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an ultimately optimized distributed fiber sensor capable of resolving 2100000 independent points, which corresponds to a one-order-of-magnitude improvement compared to the state-of-the-art. Using a Brillouin distributed fiber sensor based on phase-modulation correlation-domain analysis combined with temporal gating of the pump and time-domain acquisition, a spatial resolution of 8.3 mm is demonstrated over a distance of 17.5 km. The sensor design addresses the most relevant factors impacting the SNR and the performance of medium-to-long range sensors as well as of sub-meter spatial resolution schemes. This step record in the number of resolved points could be reached due to two theoretical models proposed and experimentally validated in this study: one model describes the spatial resolution of the system and its relation with the sampling interval, and the other describes the amplitude response of the sensor, providing an accurate estimation of the SNR of the measurements.
