Tongoloa arguta (Apiaceae), a new species from southwest China.

ABSTRACT: A new species Tongoloa arguta (Apiaceae) is described and illustrated in this article. The new species grows in alpine bushes and meadows in south-western China. It resembles T. silaifolia, but differs from the latter by the length of the stem, ultimate segments of leaf and rays of the umbel. Phylogenetic analysis, based on nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences, is provided, as well as comparative morphology between related species.

Project description:A new species, Cyclorhizapuana J. Zhou & Z.W. Liu (Apiaceae) from Sichuan Province of China, is described and illustrated here. Morphological comparisons with congeneric species revealed that it is distinguished by its slender habit, sparse annular scars, 4-pinnatisect leaf blade with ultimate segments linear (2-4×0.5-1 mm), subequal rays, oblong fruits with slightly thickened ribs, obconic stylopodium and slightly concave seed face. A molecular analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences indicated that C.puana is genetically distinct from the other two species of the genus. A distribution map, as well as an updated key, are provided for the species of Cyclorhiza.

Hanseniatrifoliolata, a new species (Apiaceae) from Shaanxi, China.

Project description:Hanseniatrifoliolata Q.P.Jiang & X.J.He (Apiaceae), is described as new from Shaanxi Province, northwest China. The mericarp features of H.trifoliolata resemble H.himalayensis and H.phaea and molecular phylogenetic analyses (combining ITS and plastid genomes data) suggest that H.trifoliolata is closely related to the group formed by H.oviformis and H.forbesii. The new species H.trifoliolata has unique 3-foliolate leaves and differ from other Hansenia species in its leaves, umbel numbers and size. A comprehensive description of H.trifoliolata is provided, including habitat environment and detailed morphological traits.

Project description:Based on morphology and molecular data, a new species Semenovia gyirongensis Q.Y.Xiao & X.J.He, from Gyirong County, Xizang, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically most similar to S. malcolmii (Hemsley & Pearson) Pimenov, but differs in its cylindric much-branched root, intensively branching long underground caudex with distinct nodes, narrowly ovate to ovate terminal leaf lobes, oblong bracts with obtuse-rounded or cuneate apex.

Sileneophioglossa (Caryophyllaceae, Sileneae), a new species from southwest China

Project description:Abstract Sileneophioglossa Huan C. Wang & Feng Yang, a new species of Caryophyllaceae, is here described and illustrated based on morphological and molecular evidence. The new species was found in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, southwest China. Phylogenetic analysis based on ITS sequences showed this new species belongs to section Cucubaloides. Morphologically, it resembles S.phoenicodonta and S.viscidula, which were also found in the southwest China, but clearly differs from the latter two species by having 5–7 mm long calyces with sparsely hirtellous and short glandular hairs, white petals, linear limbs and lobes, and absent or oblong-linear coronal scales. A distribution map and a table with morphological diagnostic characters of new species and its closest relatives are provided, as well as a preliminary conservation assessment of S.ophioglossa under the IUCN criteria.

Pternopetalum paucifoliolatum (Apiaceae), a new Critically Endangered species from Sichuan, China.

Project description:Pternopetalum paucifoliolatum, a new species from Sixigou Scenic Area, Emeishan City, Sichuan Province, is proposed and described. Diagnostic morphological characters, full description, detailed illustrations, and a distribution map are provided. The new species is similar to P. porphyronotum in possessing the 1-pinnate leaves and the abaxially purple-red leaflets, but differs from the latter by shorter stature, fewer leaflets ((1-) 3-7) and rays (5-8), the leaflet margin white-ciliate. The new species, which is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), was only found on limestone cliffs. We also provide a new key to the species of Pternopetalum.

The new species resembles F.disticha, F.diversiformis and F.hederacea, but differs from these in the medium-sized acrophylls, shorter peduncle, as well as larger and spotted syconium. According to the morphological traits and phylogenetic placement, the new species belongs to Ficussubg.Synoeciasect.Apiosycea. Besides, the new species deviates from the common distribution pattern compared to the other members of sect. Apiosycea, indicating that it could be very useful for exploring the biogeography of sect. Apiosycea.

Project description:Silenevanchingshanensis (Caryophyllaceae), a new species from Fanjingshan Mountain in Guizhou (southwest China) is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to S.morrisonmontana and S.hupehensis, from which it can be easily distinguished by having pubescent stems usually 10-15 cm long, linear-oblanceolate leaves 3-6 cm × 3-6 mm, often 2-5-flowered cymes, pink or violet petals and narrowly ovoid capsules.

Two New Species of Sidera (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota) from Southwest China.

Project description:Two new wood-inhabiting fungi, Sidera salmonea sp. Nov. and S. tibetica sp. Nov. in the order Hymenochaetales from southwest China, are described and illustrated based on molecular and morphological evidence. They were found on gymnosperm wood that is rotten and charred. The characteristics of S. salmonea include annual, resupinate basidioma, salmon pores with distinctly white margins, angular pores (7-9 per mm), a dimitic hyphal system, and lunate basidiospores that are 3-3.5 × 0.9-1.1 μm. The characteristics of S. tibetica include annual, resupinate basidioma with a white to cream fresh pore surface that becomes cream to honey-yellow and shiny when dry, round pores (7-8 per mm), a dimitic hyphal system, and lunate basidiospores that measure 2.9-3.1 × 1-1.1 μm. A phylogenetic analysis based on the combined 2-locus dataset (5.8S + nuclear large subunit RNA (nLSU)) shows that the two species are members of the genus Sidera, and they are morphologically compared with related species, respectively. This paper provides a key to the identification of 16 accepted species of Sidera that are found throughout the world.

Pternopetalumshunhuangensis (Apiaceae), a new species from Hunan, China.

Project description:Based on field investigations, morphological and molecular systematic studies, a new species, Pternopetalumshunhuangensis (Apiaceae) from Hunan Province, China is described. Diagnostic morphological characters, full description and a detailed illustration are provided. The differences between P.shunhuangensis and morphologically similar species P.tanakae are presented and discussed. Since no population assessment of this species in its whole distribution area is made, it is best to assign a conservation status of 'Data Deficient' (DD) for this species.
