Information on sex differences in the association between chronotype and depression is scarce. We aimed to investigate these differences using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2016. Project description:Depression and anxiety have been inconsistently associated with diabetes. Sex differences in the biological and behavioral correlates of these forms of distress could partially explain these inconsistencies. We investigated sex-specific associations between depression/anxiety symptoms and diabetes in two separate samples.The First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey enrolled 3233 participants aged 25 to 74 years from 1971 to 1974. Depression and anxiety symptoms were measured via General Well Being schedule subscales. Incident diabetes for 17 years was defined by the following: a) death certificate, b) participant self-report, or c) health care facility discharge. The Detroit Neighborhood Health Study enrolled 1054 participants 18 years or older from 2008 to 2010. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 assessed depression and anxiety. Participants' self-reported physician-diagnosed prevalent diabetes.In the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the risk ratio (RR; 95% confidence interval) for incident diabetes among men with high versus low anxiety symptoms was 0.85 (0.56-1.29) and that among women was 2.19 (1.17-4.09; p for interaction = .005). RRs comparing high versus low depressive symptoms for men and women were 0.69 (0.43-1.100) and 2.11 (1.06-4.19); p for interaction = .007. In the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study, the RRs for prevalent diabetes comparing those with high versus low anxiety symptoms were 0.24 (0.02-2.42) for men and 1.62 (0.61-4.32) for women (p for interaction = < .001), whereas RRs for depression were 1.30 (0.46-3.68) for men and 2.32 (1.10-4.89) for women (p for interaction = .16).In two separate samples, depressive symptoms were related to increased diabetes risk among women but not men. Although less robust, findings for anxiety were differentially associated with diabetes by sex.

Project description:BackgroundThis study explores the association between chronotypes and adolescent health risk behaviors (HRBs) by testing how genetic background moderates these associations and clarifies the influence of chronotypes and polygenic risk score (PRS) on adolescent HRBs.MethodsUsing VOS-viewer software to select the corresponding data, this study used knowledge domain mapping to identify and develop the research direction with respect to adolescent risk factor type. Next, DNA samples from 264 students were collected for low-depth whole-genome sequencing. The sequencing detected HRB risk loci, 49 single nucleotide polymorphisms based to significant SNP. Subsequently, PRSs were assessed and divided into low, moderate, and high genetic risk according to the tertiles and chronotypes and interaction models were constructed to evaluate the association of interaction effect and clustering of adolescent HRBs. The chronotypes and the association between CLOCK-PRS and HRBs were examined to explore the association between chronotypes and mental health and circadian CLOCK-PRS and HRBs.ResultsFour prominent areas were displayed by clustering information fields in network and density visualization modes in VOS-viewer. The total score of evening chronotypes correlated with high-level clustering of HRBs in adolescents, co-occurrence, and mental health, and the difference was statistically significant. After controlling covariates, the results remained consistent. Three-way interactions between chronotype, age, and mental health were observed, and the differences were statistically significant. CLOCK-PRS was constructed to identify genetic susceptibility to the clustering of HRBs. The interaction of evening chronotypes and high genetic risk CLOCK-PRS was positively correlated with high-level clustering of HRBs and HRB co-occurrence in adolescents, and the difference was statistically significant. The interaction between the sub-dimensions of evening chronotypes and the high genetic CLOCK-PRS risk correlated with the outcome of the clustering of HRBs and HRB co-occurrence.ConclusionsThe interaction of PRS and chronotype and the HRBs in adolescents appear to have an association, and the three-way interaction between the CLOCK-PRS, chronotype, and mental health plays important roles for HRBs in adolescents.

Project description:Risk-taking is a complex form of decision-making that involves calculated assessments of potential costs and rewards that may be immediate or delayed. Thus, making predictions about inter-individual variation in risk-taking due to personality traits, decision styles or other attributes can be difficult. The association of risk-taking with gender is well-supported; males report higher propensity for risk-taking and show higher risk-taking on tasks measuring actual risk-taking behavior. Risk-taking also appears to be associated with circadian phenotypes (chronotypes), with evening-types reporting higher levels of risk-taking-but this association may be confounded by the fact that, in certain age groups, males are more likely to be evening-types. Here, we test for gender by chronotype effects on risk-taking in young adults (n = 610) using a self-reported risk propensity questionnaire, the health domain of the DOSPERT, and a behavioral task measuring risk-taking, the Balloon Analog Risk Task (BART). Our results show that males report and take significantly more risks than females in this population. In addition, evening-type individuals have significantly higher self-reported risk propensity and tend to take more risks on the BART. Interestingly, there is no significant difference in risk propensity or risk-taking behavior across male circadian phenotypes, but evening-type females significantly report and take more risk than female intermediate and morning types. In regression analyses, we found both gender and chronotype predict risk propensity and risk-taking. Path analysis confirms that chronotype has an indirect effect on gender differences in both risk propensity and risk-taking. Furthermore, we found that trait anxiety (STAI) and sleep disturbance (PROMIS), significantly correlate with chronotype and gender in the complete dataset, but do not independently predict differences in female risk-taking. These results suggest that chronotype mediates gender effects on risk-taking and that these effects are driven primarily by morning-type females, but are not related to gender-specific differences in trait anxiety or sleep quality.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study aimed to identify sex differences in the association between depression and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).MethodsA secondary analysis was conducted of data from the fifth to seventh waves (2010-2018) of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants were adults aged 30-74 years who had no diagnosis of CVD. The CVD risk was calculated using the Framingham Risk Score algorithm. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to identify the association between depression and CVD risk using a complex sample design.ResultsThe mean CVD risk was higher in males and females with current depression (14.72% vs. 6.35%, respectively) than in males without current depression (11.67% and 4.42%, respectively). Current depression showed a significant association with CVD risk after controlling for only health-related characteristics, but the significance disappeared in both males and females when demographic characteristics were additionally controlled.ConclusionThe presence of depression was not associated with CVD risk regardless of sex after controlling for confounding factors. Further studies are recommended to investigate the relationship between depression and CVD risk in a larger sample of both males and females with depression.

Project description:BackgroundThe association of evening chronotype with cardiometabolic disease has been well established. However, the extent to which circadian rhythm disturbances independently result in risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal associations between chronotype and cardiometabolic risk among Chinese young adults.MethodsFrom April to May 2019, a total of 1 135 young adults were selected to complete the self-administered questionnaire, and 744 fasting blood samples were collected to quantify cardiometabolic parameters. From April to May 2021, 340 fasting blood samples were collected to quantify cardiometabolic parameters. The Morning and Evening Questionnaire 5 (MEQ-5) was used to assess chronotype. The cardiometabolic (CM)-risk score was the sum of standardized Z scores based on gender for the 5 indicators: waist circumference (WC), mean arterial pressure (MAP), triglyceride (TG), homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), where the HDL-C is multiplied by-1. The generalized linear model was used to determine the cross-sectional and prospective longitudinal associations between chronotype and each cardiometabolic parameter.ResultsCross-sectional association analysis showed that lower MEQ-5 scores were correlated with higher fasting insulin (β=-1.420, 95%CI: -2.386~-0.453), higher HOMA-IR (β=-0.301, 95%CI: -0.507~-0.095), and higher CM risk score (β=-0.063, 95%CI: -0.122~-0.003), even after adjustment for covariates. Prospective longitudinal association analysis also showed that lower MEQ-5 scores were associated with 2 years later higher fasting glucose (β=-0.018, 95%CI: -0.034~-0.003), higher fasting insulin (β=-0.384, 95%CI: -0.766~-0.003), higher HOMA-IR (β=-0.089, 95%CI: -0.176~-0.002), and higher CM-risk score (β=-0.109, 95%CI: -0.214~-0.003) after adjustment for covariates.ConclusionsEvening chronotype was significantly correlated with higher CM risk among young adults. Our findings suggest that biologically and socially affected sleep timing misalignment is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disease risk.

Project description:Chronotype is a behavioral manifestation of the internal circadian clock system. It refers to the specific activity-rest preference of an individual over a 24-h period and can be assessed using different methodologies that classify individuals into morning or evening chronotype. In recent years, several studies have suggested a relation between individual chronotype, eating habits, and the risk of developing obesity and other conditions. Our aim was to evaluate the association between chronotype, energy intake, and health status through a meta-analytic approach. A comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane Database was conducted. Observational studies that reported a measure of association between chronotype, energy intake, and health indicators were considered eligible. Overall, 39 observational studies (37 cross-sectional studies, 2 prospective cohort studies) were included in the systematic review, with a total of 377,797 subjects. By comparing morning and evening subjects, pooled analyses of cross-sectional studies showed significantly (P < 0.001) higher concentrations of blood glucose [mean difference (MD): 7.82; 95% CI: 3.18, 12.45], glycated hemoglobin (MD: 7.64; 95% CI: 3.08, 12.21), LDL cholesterol (MD: 13.69; 95% CI: 6.84, 20.54), and triglycerides (MD: 12.62; 95% CI: 0.90, 24.35) in evening subjects. Furthermore, an association between evening type and the risk of diabetes (OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.41), cancer (OR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.30), and depression (OR: 1.86; 95% CI: 1.20, 2.88) was reported. Regarding the other outcomes examined, no significant differences were observed between the groups in terms of energy intake, anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, insulin, total and HDL cholesterol, and hypertension risk. In conclusion, evening chronotype was associated with a worse cardiometabolic risk profile and higher risk of diabetes, cancer, and depression. Further studies are needed to confirm these results and to better elucidate the interplay between chronotype, nutrition, and health status. Project description:IntroductionPrevious research has shown that screen time is associated with depression, especially in children. Some evidence further suggests that the association may be stronger in women than in men, although findings are inconclusive. This cross-sectional study examines the association between screen time and depression in representative U.S. adults, stratified by gender.MethodsThis study used data from the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey; analysis was conducted in 2023. Screen time was partitioned into 3 categories-0-2 hours, 3-4 hours, and >4 hours-and included TV and computer time. Depression was defined as a Patient Health Questionnaire score ≥10. TV time and computer time were also analyzed as separate exposures. A multivariable logistic regression model examined the association between screen time and depression.ResultsResults showed that there was a significant interaction between gender and screen time. An association between the highest screen time exposure group and depression was observed for women (>4 hours per day: OR=3.09; 95% CI=1.68, 5.70). The type of screen time affected the relationship, with TV showing a stronger association than computer time. There were no significant associations in men across all exposure groups.ConclusionsFurther research is needed to determine whether higher levels of screen time, especially TV, may be a depression risk marker for women but not men.

Project description:IntroductionThe association between obesity and asthma control/quality of life commonly relies on body mass index (BMI) as the anthropomorphic measure. Due to limitations of BMI and the existence of alternative measures, such as neck circumference (NC), we examined the association between NC and asthma control/quality of life, with particular attention to male-female differences.Materials and methodsThe AsthMaP-2 Project is an observational study of youth with physician-diagnosed asthma. NC was stratified according to age- and sex-specific cutoffs and associated with asthma control (via Asthma Control Test [ACT]) and quality of life (via Integrated Therapeutics Group [ITG]-Asthma Short Form).ResultsThe mean ± SD age was 11.9 ± 3.6 years, and 53% were male (N = 116). The mean BMI percentile was at the 71 ± 28 percentile. Thirty-one participants (27%) met criteria for high NC. Males with high NC had significantly worse asthma control (P = 0.02) and lower quality of life than those with low NC. No similar association was found for females and the proportion of variability in ACT and ITG was best explained by BMI percentile. Conversely, for males, the proportion of variability in these scores explained by NC was larger than BMI percentile alone (Cohen's f(2) = 0.04-0.09, a small to medium effect size).DiscussionAmong male youth with asthma, combined use of NC and BMI percentile explained asthma control and quality of life better than BMI alone. Future studies of asthma should include measurement of NC and other anthropogenic measures of regional adiposity to clarify sex differences in asthma. Project description:BackgroundIn the United States, racial/ethnic disparities in preterm birth (PTB) are well documented, but explanations for why the disparity persists remain to be fully explored. We examined racial/ethnic differences in the association of maternal antenatal depression with PTB (<37 completed weeks of gestation) risk.MethodsIn a prospective cohort study, participants (n = 2073) included non-Hispanic (NH) black, NH white, Asian, and Hispanic women who received prenatal care at a university obstetric clinic January 2004-March 2010, and delivered at the university's hospital. We obtained data from self-reported questionnaires and electronic medical records. We assessed antenatal depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and self-reported antenatal antidepressant medication use. Poisson regression models were used to estimate the association between antenatal depression and PTB risk, within strata of race/ethnicity.ResultsNH black (risk ratio [RR] = 1.89; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.94, 3.80), NH white (RR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.04, 2.39), and Asian (RR = 2.06; 95% CI: 0.69, 6.13) women with antenatal depression were at increased risk for delivering preterm infants, compared with women without antenatal depression, although the associations were statistically significant only among NH white women. There was no evidence of an association between antenatal depression and risk of PTB among Hispanic women (RR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.28, 3.25); p-value for interaction = 0.81.ConclusionOur findings suggest race-specific associations of antenatal depression with an increased risk of delivering a preterm infant, supporting the importance of considering race/ethnicity when examining risk factors for health outcomes.

Project description:Anxiety and depression are common mental health disorders and have a higher prevalence in females. They are modestly heritable, share genetic liability with other psychiatric disorders, and are highly heterogeneous. There is evidence that genetic liability to neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with anxiety and depression, particularly in females. We investigated sex differences in family history for neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders and neurodevelopmental genetic risk burden (indexed by ADHD polygenic risk scores (PRS) and rare copy number variants; CNVs) in individuals with anxiety and depression, also taking into account age at onset. We used two complementary datasets: 1) participants with a self-reported diagnosis of anxiety or depression (N = 4,178, 65.5% female; mean age = 41.5 years; N = 1,315 with genetic data) from the National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) cohort and 2) a clinical sample of 13,273 (67.6% female; mean age = 45.2 years) patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC). We tested for sex differences in family history of psychiatric problems and presence of rare CNVs (neurodevelopmental and >500kb loci) in NCMH only and for sex differences in ADHD PRS in both datasets. In the NCMH cohort, females were more likely to report family history of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, but there were no robust sex differences in ADHD PRS or presence of rare CNVs. There was weak evidence of higher ADHD PRS in females compared to males in the PGC MDD sample, particularly in those with an early onset of MDD. These results do not provide strong evidence of sex differences in neurodevelopmental genetic risk burden in adults with anxiety and depression. This indicates that sex may not be a major index of neurodevelopmental genetic heterogeneity, that is captured by ADHD PRS and rare CNV burden, in adults with anxiety and depression.
