The human nasopharynx contains a stable microbial ecosystem of commensal and potentially pathogenic bacteria, which can elicit protective primary and secondary immune responses. Experimental intranasal infection of human adults with the commensal <i>Neisseria lactamica</i> produced safe, sustained pharyngeal colonization.
