Groundwater quality with special reference to fluoride concentration in the granitic and basaltic contact zone of southern India.

ABSTRACT: The main focus of this data article is to evaluate the groundwater and surface water quality from a granitic-basaltic watershed in a semi-arid region. The obtained values are evaluated concerning the drinking water quality standards proposed by WHO, specifically for the semi-arid regions. All the physio-chemical parameters (fourteen) required for the calculation of water-quality indices and source appreciation were derived. Person correlation analysis for the measured parameters is presented with high to poor correlation groups in the study region. A brief description of the methods and calculation of water quality indices is mentioned. The data can be re-used to calculate to evaluate the suitability for drinking and agriculture needs of the basin; besides, it can be helpful to the authorities to make policies to mitigate the water quality vulnerability.

Fluoride concentration data in groundwater resources of Gonabad, Iran.

Project description:The data was obtained from fluoride ion concentrations determined in groundwater sources of Gonabad. A number of 144 samples from 12 drinking groundwater wells located in different regions at the mid of spring, summer, autumn and winter from each regions, were collected from spring 2016 to spring of 2017. The fluoride ions in the samples were determined through the SPADNS colorimetric method at a wavelength of 580 nm. Dispersion of fluoride ions in terms of concentration in groundwater resources of Gonabad was planned using geographic information system (GIS) base on inverse distance weighted (IDW) method. The data showed that lowest and highest concentration of fluoride ions were determined 0.46 in winter and 1.56 mg/l in summer season, respectively. The average, max and min amount of fluoride concentration in groundwater resources of Gonabad were 0.67 ± 0.03, 1.56 and 0.46 mg/L, respectively. The average chemical parameters concentration of Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphate, Nitrate, Bicarbonate, Sulfate and Chloride were 6.61 ± 1.2, 281.17 ± 3.08, 26.75 ± 2.55, 68.14 ± 3.89, 0.2 ± 0.04, 10 ± 1.83, 275.02 ± 7.20, 282.08 ± 5.04 and 235 ± 5.83 mg/L, respectively.

Data on fluoride concentration profile in groundwater of rural habitats in Mahabubnagar district, Telangana, India.

Project description:Fluoride is an undesirable chemical in drinking water that can have dreadful concerns on health. The objective of this study is to establish the concentration profile of fluoride in groundwater used as drinking water in 31 rural habitats in Mahabubnagar district, Telangana State, India. Drinking water samples from bore wells/hand pumps were collected from different locations in the study area and analyzed for fluoride levels using a spectrophotometer. The fluoride levels range from 0.6 to 1.8 mg/L, with an average value of 1.31 mg/L. Overall, 32% of groundwater samples found to be exceeded the prescribed limits of fluoride in the study area, as prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Besides, the optimal amounts of fluoride in drinking water have to meet in the range of 0.5 mg/L and 1.5 mg/L, as this range is the permissible limit for drinking. Fluoride is an essential micronutrient for normal mineralization of teeth and bones as well as for the formation of dental enamel in the human body. This study suggested that prolonged intake of drinking water with fluoride concentrations higher than acceptable limits can trigger dental and skeletal fluorosis in the general community of the study region. The fluoride data compared with the permissible levels recommended for drinking purposes by various regulatory agencies across the world.

Hydrogeochemical data on groundwater quality with special emphasis on fluoride enrichment in Munneru river basin (MRB), Telangana State, South India.

Project description:Fluorosis is one of the most prevailing groundwater related disease in developing countries like India and China. In India, 20 out of 29 states have some extent of groundwater fluoride contamination. In especially, Telangana State all (10 out of 10) districts are fluoride affected (Adimalla and Venkatayogi, 2017) [2]. However, this article describes about fluoride contamination and correlation between fluoride and other hydrochemical parameters, in the Munneru river basin (MRB) groundwater, Telangana State, South India. The fluoride concentration in groundwater of Munneru river basin ranged from 0.3 to 8.0 mg/L, with a mean of 1.607 mg/L. About 35% of the groundwater samples have fluoride concentration above > 1.5 mg/L which are unsuitable for drinking purposes. However, 53% of groundwater locations are within the acceptable limits (0.5-1.5 mg/L) and these are very suitable for drinking purposes and remaining 22% of collected groundwater samples were having less than the required limit of 0.5 mg/L.

Metabolic activity of subterranean microbial communities in deep granitic groundwater supplemented with methane and H(2).

Project description:It was previously concluded that opposing gradients of sulphate and methane, observations of 16S ribosomal DNA sequences displaying great similarity to those of anaerobic methane-oxidizing Archaea and a peak in sulphide concentration in groundwater from a depth of 250-350 m in Olkiluoto, Finland, indicated proper conditions for methane oxidation with sulphate. In the present research, pressure-resistant, gas-tight circulating systems were constructed to enable the investigation of attached and unattached anaerobic microbial populations from a depth of 327 m in Olkiluoto under in situ pressure (2.4 MPa), diversity, dissolved gas and chemistry conditions. Three parallel flow cell cabinets were configured to allow observation of the influence on microbial metabolic activity of 11 mM methane, 11 mM methane plus 10 mM H2 or 2.1 mM O2 plus 7.9 mM N2 (that is, air). The concentrations of these gases and of organic acids and carbon, sulphur chemistry, pH and Eh, ATP, numbers of cultivable micro-organisms, and total numbers of cells and bacteriophages were subsequently recorded under batch conditions for 105 days. The system containing H2 and methane displayed microbial reduction of 0.7 mM sulphate to sulphide, whereas the system containing only methane resulted in 0.2 mM reduced sulphate. The system containing added air became inhibited and displayed no signs of microbial activity. Added H2 and methane induced increasing numbers of lysogenic bacteriophages per cell. It appears likely that a microbial anaerobic methane-oxidizing process coupled to acetate formation and sulphate reduction may be ongoing in aquifers at a depth of 250-350 m in Olkiluoto.

Migration and interaction in a contact zone: mtDNA variation among Bantu-speakers in Southern Africa.

Project description:Bantu speech communities expanded over large parts of sub-Saharan Africa within the last 4000-5000 years, reaching different parts of southern Africa 1200-2000 years ago. The Bantu languages subdivide in several major branches, with languages belonging to the Eastern and Western Bantu branches spreading over large parts of Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa. There is still debate whether this linguistic divide is correlated with a genetic distinction between Eastern and Western Bantu speakers. During their expansion, Bantu speakers would have come into contact with diverse local populations, such as the Khoisan hunter-gatherers and pastoralists of southern Africa, with whom they may have intermarried. In this study, we analyze complete mtDNA genome sequences from over 900 Bantu-speaking individuals from Angola, Zambia, Namibia, and Botswana to investigate the demographic processes at play during the last stages of the Bantu expansion. Our results show that most of these Bantu-speaking populations are genetically very homogenous, with no genetic division between speakers of Eastern and Western Bantu languages. Most of the mtDNA diversity in our dataset is due to different degrees of admixture with autochthonous populations. Only the pastoralist Himba and Herero stand out due to high frequencies of particular L3f and L3d lineages; the latter are also found in the neighboring Damara, who speak a Khoisan language and were foragers and small-stock herders. In contrast, the close cultural and linguistic relatives of the Herero and Himba, the Kuvale, are genetically similar to other Bantu-speakers. Nevertheless, as demonstrated by resampling tests, the genetic divergence of Herero, Himba, and Kuvale is compatible with a common shared ancestry with high levels of drift, while the similarity of the Herero, Himba, and Damara probably reflects admixture, as also suggested by linguistic analyses.

Project description:In this article, we measured the levels of fluoride in groundwater. The samples were taken from groundwater in Bushehr's province, Iran. After the collection of samples, the concentration levels of fluoride were determined by the standard SPADNS method using spectrometer. The mean concentration levels of fluoride in water of all stations were higher than the WHO drinking water guideline. Microsoft Office Excel 2016 was used for calculation of mean values. The mean concentration level of fluoride instatement were in the range of 1.52 to 3.64 mg l-1.

Fluoride contributes to the shaping of microbial community in high fluoride groundwater in Qiji County, Yuncheng City, China.

Project description:As a toxic element, excessive amounts of fluoride in environment can be harmful because of its antimicrobial activity, however little is known about the relationship between fluoride and the bacterial community in groundwater systems. Here, we use samples from a typical fluorosis area to test the hypothesis that fluoride concentration is a fundamental structuring factor for bacterial communities in groundwater. Thirteen groundwater samples were collected; high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and statistical analysis were conducted to compare the bacterial community composition in individual wells. The results showed that Proteobacteria, with most relative abundance in groundwater, decreased along the groundwater fluoride concentration. Additionally, relative abundances of 12 families were also statistically correlated with fluoride concentration. The bacterial community was significantly explained by TOC (P = 0.045) and fluoride concentration (P = 0.007) of groundwater. This suggests that fluoride and TOC likely plays an important role in shaping the microbial community structure in these groundwater systems. Our research suggest that fluoride concentration should be taken into consideration in future when evaluating microbial response to environmental conditions in groundwater system, especially for fluoride rich groundwater.

Long-Term Epidemiology of Streptococcus pneumoniae Serogroup 6 in a Region of Southern Europe with Special Reference to Serotype 6E.

Project description:Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6E has recently been described, but its long-term epidemiology is not well known. From 1981-2013, 704 serogroup 6 clinical isolates were obtained in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain. All invasive and one in four non-invasive isolates were included. Overall, 75, 97, 51 and 45 serotypes 6A, 6B, 6C and 6E isolates, respectively, were detected. No serotype 6D isolates were identified. The prevalence of serotypes 6E and 6B, but not that of serotypes 6A and 6C, declined after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. Serotype 6E isolates showed the highest resistance rate. Most serotype 6E isolates were ST90.

Automated concentration of [18F]fluoride into microliter volumes.

Project description:Concentration of [18F]fluoride has been mentioned in literature, however, reports have lacked details about system designs, operation, and performance. Here, we describe in detail a compact, fast, fully-automated concentration system based on a micro-sized strong anion exchange cartridge. The concentration of radionuclides enables scaled-up microfluidic synthesis. Our system can also be used to provide highly concentrated [18F]fluoride with minimal water content. We demonstrate how the concentrator can produce varying concentrations of [18F]fluoride for the macroscale synthesis of N-boc-5-[18F]fluoroindole without an azeotropic drying process, while enabling high starting radioactivity. By appropriate choice of solid-phase resin, flow conditions, and eluent solution, we believe this approach can be extended beyond [18F]fluoride to other radionuclides.
