Subtropical Marine Low Stratiform Cloud Deck Spatial Errors in the E3SMv1 Atmosphere Model.

ABSTRACT: Marine low-level clouds continue to be poorly simulated in models despite many studies and field experiments devoted to their improvement. Here we focus on the spatial errors in the cloud decks in the Department of Energy Earth system model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model [E3SM]) relative to the satellite climatology by calculating centroid distances, area ratios, and overlap ratios. Since model dynamics is better simulated than clouds, these errors are attributed primarily to the model physics. To gain additional insight, we performed a sensitivity run in which model winds were nudged to those of reanalysis. This results in a large change (but not necessarily an improvement) in the simulated cloud decks. These differences between simulations are mainly due to the interactions between model dynamics and physics. These results suggest that both model physics (widely recognized) and its interaction with dynamics (less recognized) are important to model improvement in simulating these low-level clouds.

Project description:The deep convective cloud-environment feedback loop is likely important to Titan's global methane, energy, and momentum cycles, just as it is for Earth's global water, energy, and momentum budgets. General circulation models of Titan's atmosphere are unable to explicitly simulate deep convection and must instead parameterize the impact of this important subgrid-scale phenomenon on the model-resolved atmospheric state. The goal of this study is to better quantify through cloud resolving modeling the effects of deep convective methane storms on their environment and to feed that information forward to improve parameterizations in global models. Dozens of atmospheric profiles unstable with respect to deep moist convection are extracted from the global Titan Atmospheric Model (TAM) and used to initialize the cloud-resolving Titan Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (TRAMS). Mean profiles of heating/cooling and moistening/drying of the large-scale environment in TRAMS indicate that Titan's deep convection forces the environment in a manner analogous to Earth: Large-scale subsidence of the environmental air warms and dries the environment, but clouds can also moisten the environment through the detrainment and evaporation of condensate near cloud top. Relative humidity profiles and characteristic convective time scales are derived to guide the tuning of the deep convective parameterization implemented in TAM, as described in a companion paper. The triggering of convection, the dry convective mixing of the planetary boundary layer, and the entrainment of environmental air into rising air parcels are found to be critical to determining whether a deep convective cloud will form. Only profiles with relatively large convective available potential energy (CAPE) and well mixed planetary boundary layers with high relative humidity were found to produce storms. Environments with low level thermal inversions and planetary boundary layers with low relative humidity or rapidly decreasing moisture with height failed to generate deep convection in TRAMS despite positive CAPE.

Project description:Despite increases in the frequency and intensity of disturbances on coral reefs over the past few decades, the response of subtropical coral assemblages to climate change is poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap on Australian reefs and provide a baseline for future comparisons, we quantified spatial (10-100's of kilometres) and temporal (decadal) patterns of benthic assemblages across a latitudinal gradient along the east Australian coastline (23.5° S to 31.5° S). Benthic community composition was quantified at six locations from the southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland (Heron Reef, 23.5° S, 152° E) to northern New South Wales (31° S, 153.1° E) and at Lord Howe Island (31.5° S, 159.1° E). Our results indicate significant latitudinal differences in benthic assemblages, while community composition at some sites was more similar to those hundreds of kilometres away than to that of neighbouring reefs. A general trend was observed with decreasing cover of Acroporidae with increasing latitude, corresponding with an increasing cover of Pocilloporidae and Dendrophylliidae. Heron Reef comprised a high proportion of Acropora corals (43% total coral cover) and coralline algae (44%). In contrast, high-latitude reefs were dominated by mixed coral assemblages (0-52%) and high macroalgal cover (16-27%). Decadal comparisons of high-latitude reefs showed regional stability of benthic assemblages (9 out of 11 assemblages remained stable at > 75% similarity), during a period of warming oceans (0.15-0.24°C per decade). Such temporal stability suggests that eastern Australian subtropical communities may be more resistant than tropical reef communities that have experienced assembly shifts caused by perturbations associated with recent global climate change. Despite the clear differences in the structure of coral assemblages evident in our spatial surveys, we suggest that the temporal stability of high-latitude reefs may provide a limited refuge for tropical coral populations in an increasingly uncertain future.
