Better coverage, better outcomes? Mapping mobile network data to official statistics using satellite imagery and radio propagation modelling.

ABSTRACT: Mobile sensing data has become a popular data source for geo-spatial analysis, however, mapping it accurately to other sources of information such as statistical data remains a challenge. Popular mapping approaches such as point allocation or voronoi tessellation provide only crude approximations of the mobile network coverage as they do not consider holes, overlaps and within-cell heterogeneity. More elaborate mapping schemes often require additional proprietary data operators are highly reluctant to share. In this paper, I use human settlement information extracted from publicly available satellite imagery in combination with stochastic radio propagation modelling techniques to account for that. I show in a simulation study and a real-world application on unemployment estimates in Senegal that better coverage approximations do not necessarily lead to better outcome predictions.

Project description:A tunable stochastic geometry based Three-Dimensional (3-D) scattering model for emerging land mobile radio cellular systems is proposed. Uniformly distributed scattering objects are assumed around the Mobile Station (MS) bounded within an ellipsoidal shaped Scattering Region (SR) hollowed with an elliptically-cylindric scattering free region in immediate vicinity of MS. To ensure the degree of expected accuracy, the proposed model is designed to be tunable (as required) with nine degrees of freedom, unlike its counterparts in the existing literature. The outer and inner boundaries of SR are designed as independently scalable along all the axes and rotatable in horizontal plane around their origin centered at MS. The elevated Base Station (BS) is considered outside the SR at a certain adjustable distance and height w.r.t. position of MS. Closed-form analytical expressions for joint and marginal Probability Density Functions (PDFs) of Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) and Time-of-Arrival (ToA) are derived for both up- and down-links. The obtained analytical results for angular and temporal statistics of the channel are presented along with a thorough analysis. The impact of various physical model parameters on angular and temporal characteristics of the channel is presented, which reveals the comprehensive insight on the proposed results. To evaluate the robustness of the proposed analytical model, a comparison with experimental datasets and simulation results is also presented. The obtained analytical results for PDF of AoA observed at BS are seen to fit a vast range of empirical datasets in the literature taken for various outdoor propagation environments. In order to establish the validity of the obtained analytical results for spatial and temporal characteristics of the channel, a comparison of the proposed analytical results with the simulation results is shown, which illustrates a good fit for 10(7) scattering points. Moreover, the proposed model is shown to degenerate to various notable geometric models in the literature by an appropriate choice of a few parameters.

Project description:Remotely sensed data can serve as an independent source of information about the location of residential structures in areas under demographic and health surveillance. We report on results obtained combining satellite imagery, imported from Bing, with location data routinely collected using the built-in GPS sensors of tablet computers, to assess completeness of population coverage in a Health and Demographic Surveillance System in Malawi. The Majete Malaria Project Health and Demographic Surveillance System, in Malawi, started in 2014 to support a project with the aim of studying the reduction of malaria using an integrated control approach by rolling out insecticide treated nets and improved case management supplemented with house improvement and larval source management. In order to support the monitoring of the trial a Health and Demographic Surveillance System was established in the area that surrounds the Majete Wildlife Reserve (1600 km2), using the OpenHDS data system. We compared house locations obtained using GPS recordings on mobile devices during the demographic surveillance census round with those acquired from satellite imagery. Volunteers were recruited through the crowdcrafting.org platform to identify building structures on the images, which enabled the compilation of a database with coordinates of potential residences. For every building identified on these satellite images by the volunteers (11,046 buildings identified of which 3424 (ca. 30%) were part of the censused area), we calculated the distance to the nearest house enumerated on the ground by fieldworkers during the census round of the HDSS. A random sample of buildings (85 structures) identified on satellite images without a nearby location enrolled in the census were visited by a fieldworker to determine how many were missed during the baseline census survey, if any were missed. The findings from this ground-truthing effort suggest that a high population coverage was achieved in the census survey, however the crowd-sourcing did not locate many of the inhabited structures (52.3% of the 6543 recorded during the census round). We conclude that using auxiliary data can play a useful role in quality assurance in population based health surveillance, but improved algorithms would be needed if crowd-sourced house locations are to be used as the basis of population databases.

Project description:Die Verfügbarkeit von kleinräumigen und aktuellen Pendlerverflechtungen sind für politische wie auch kommunale Entscheidungsfindungen von hoher Bedeutung. Aus dem Pendlerverhalten lassen sich Rückschlüsse auf Arbeitsmarktregionen und die Verteilung der Wohnbevölkerung ziehen, was unter anderem zu einer laufenden Verbesserung der Verkehrsinfrastruktur beiträgt. Die dafür notwendigen Daten veröffentlicht die amtliche Pendlerrechnung. Jedoch weist sie Verbesserungspotenzial im Hinblick auf die zeitliche und räumliche Darstellung der Pendlerverflechtungen von Erwerbstätigen sowie eine fachliche Erweiterung hinsichtlich der Bildungspendler auf. Dieser Artikel beschreibt die mit dem Projekt Pendler Mobil geprüften Erweiterungsmöglichkeiten der amtlichen Pendlerrechnung auf Basis von Quelle-Ziel-Matrizen aus Mobilfunkdaten. Mobilfunkdaten stellen aufgrund ihrer zeitlichen Aktualität und räumlich feinen Auflösung eine robuste Datengrundlage zur flexiblen Abbildung von potenziellen und regelmäßigen Pendlerbewegungen dar. Die potenzielle Leistungsfähigkeit der Mobilfunkdaten ermöglicht damit eine externe Validierung bestehender Pendlerrechnungen oder Pendlerstatistiken sowie eine beiderseitige Ergänzung zur Ermittlung und Darstellungen weiterer Formen des Pendelns der Erwerbsbevölkerung. Am Fallbeispiel des Bundeslandes Nordrhein-Westfalen werden im Folgenden Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der übereinstimmenden Pendlerverflechtungen auf Basis von Mobilfunkdaten und der amtlichen Pendlerrechnung erörtert. Dabei gehen wir auf die Herausforderungen der Aufbereitung und Definition geeigneter Mobilfunkdaten durch den Datenanbieter sowie weitere Einflüsse auf die Mobilfunkdaten, wie bspw. durch die zurückgelegte Distanz oder die Verweilzeiten mobiler Aktivitäten, ein. Besonders die Unterschätzung der mobilen Pendlerströme im Vergleich zur amtlichen Pendlerrechnung legt nahe, Modifizierungsansätze der Mobilfunkdaten zu diskutieren. Im Ergebnis können die vorliegenden Mobilfunkdaten potenziell die amtliche Pendlerrechnung durch kleinräumige Pendlerbewegungen in Städten in Form einer erweiterten Zielorts-Bestimmung unterstützen und die Identifizierung von stark frequentierten Arbeitsorten in Städten ermöglichen.
