2019: A Banner Year for Tuberculosis Research.

ABSTRACT: This article outlines the significant scientific progress reported in 2019 that has led to the development of new drugs and therapeutic regimens, vaccine candidates, and diagnostics for the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis. In 2020, it will be important to build on this momentum and continue to advance basic and clinical research to develop improved tools and interventions, simultaneously optimizing their implementation in national control programs. To successfully achieve the goal to end tuberculosis within a generation, a concerted, collective, and collaborative effort is required, involving government, academia, industry and civil society at all levels.

Topics include recent advances related to: the cerebral endothelium and the neurovascular unit; the choroid plexus, arachnoid membrane; cerebrospinal fluid and the glymphatic hypothesis; the impact of disease states on brain barriers and brain fluids; drug delivery to the brain; and translation of preclinical data to the clinic. This editorial also mourns the loss of two important figures in the field, Malcolm B. Segal and Edward G. Stopa.

Medical professionalism research characteristics and hotspots: a 10-year bibliometric analysis of publications from 2010 to 2019.

Project description:An abundance of publications on medical professionalism have been published in recent years. Our study aimed to analyze the external characteristics of publications on professionalism using bibliometrics, to describe its current developments and trends, and to explore professionalism research hotspots using co-word analysis. We retrieved literature on professionalism published from 2010 to 2019 from the Web of Science database. Histcite and CiteSpace were used to analyze external characteristics of publications, including publication trends and distributions of publications by country/region, institution, author, and journal. Co-word analysis was conducted to analyze research hotspots, using the Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder and Graphical Clustering Toolkit. We constructed a strategic diagram to show the state of each research hotspot and the relationship between the various hotspots in this field. Results showed publications on professionalism increased in number year by year as a whole. The USA, including its institutions and authors, maintained the top position worldwide in terms of numbers of publications and citations. Among scholarly journals, Academic Medicine has published more articles and has had higher citations per paper than any other journal. Six research hotspots on professionalism were identified, visualized, and expounded. Of these, the theme of "measurement and evaluation of clinical competence" received the most attention in the field of professionalism. The reporting of quantifiable knowledge on the characteristics and research hotspots of publications could help inform gaps in the field of medical professionalism and provide evidence and guidance for future work for researchers, physicians, and educators.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11192-021-03993-0.

Publication Trends of Research on Sepsis and Host Immune Response during 1999-2019: A 20-year Bibliometric Analysis.

Project description:Introduction: Sepsis is an intractable disorder, which is associated with high risk of organ dysfunction and even death, while its pathogenesis remains largely unclear. Our study aims to study the research trend on sepsis and host immune response, and compare the contribution of publications from different countries, institutions, journals and authors. Materials and Methods: We extracted all relevant publications with regard to sepsis and immune response during 1999-2019 from Web of Science. GraphPad Prism 6, and VOSviewer software were used to collect and analyze the publication trend in related field. Results: We identified a total of 1225 publications with citation frequency of 40511 times up to March 30, 2019. The United States accounted for the largest number of publications (36.3%), 51.9% of total citations as well as the highest H-index (72). The sum of publications from China ranked the second, while the overall citations (1935) and H-index (22) ranked the eighth and the seventh, respectively. Journal of Shock had published most papers related to the topic on sepsis and immune response. Ayala A SA, has published the most papers in this field (31), while Hotchkiss RS presented with the most citation frequency (3532). The keyword "regulatory T cell" appeared most recently with an average appearing years of 2014.0. The "immunosuppression related research" seemed to be the hotspot in relevant scope. Conclusions: The United States made the most outstanding contribution within this important field. There is a mismatch between the quantity and quality of publications from China. Latest progress can be tracked in journal of Shock. Immunosuppression related researches may be hotspots in the near future.

Systemic lupus erythematosus: year in review 2019.

Project description:Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with extreme heterogeneity and potentially involvement of any organ or system. Numerous unanswered questions and challenges in SLE always prompt further exploration. In 2019, great progress in various aspects of SLE emerged. Both the classification criteria and management recommendation for SLE were updated. New promising medications have been widely developed and tested, although subsequent clinical studies are warranted. As an emerging number of most notable studies in SLE were published in both clinical area and basic research in 2019, we aim to summarize the highest quality data on SLE regarding novel insights of pathogenesis, updated recommendations, hot-spot issues on clinical manifestations, new understanding of disease prognosis, and most importantly, the therapeutic advances in SLE in this review.

Publication trends of research on acute lung injury and acute respiration distress syndrome during 2009-2019: a 10-year bibliometric analysis.

Project description:BackgroundAcute lung injury (ALI) is a common disease that usually progresses to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with high morbidity and mortality. We aim to analyze the trends in ALI/ARDS, and to compare the differences in aspects of years, countries, institutions, journals, etc. Methods: We screened all relevant literature on ALI/ARDS from Web of Science during 2009-2019, and analyzed the research trends in this field by VOSviewer.ResultsWe had screened 7,890 publications with a total cited frequency of 164,713. The United States contributed the largest number of publications (2,612, 33.11%), cited frequency (81,376, 48.61%), and the highest H-index (107). Journal of Critical Care Medicine published the largest number of literatures on ALI/ARDS, MATTHAY MA published the majority of articles in this field (147), while SLUTSKY AS received the most cited frequency (10015). University of California San Francisco had the largest number of publications (243, 3.08%) among all full-time institutions. In the aspect of clinical research in ALI/ARDS, the keyword "Berlin definition" emerged in recent years, with an average year of 2016.3; in the basic research, the key word "protects" appeared latest, and the average years were 2016.5. The current research trend indicates that basic research is gradually transforming into clinical research.ConclusionsThe United States have made the most significant contribution to the ALI/ARDS field in the last decade. The current research 'hotspot' mainly appeared in clinical research, such as "Berlin definition". In regards to basic research, studies tend to explore the protective mechanisms against ALI/ARDS.

HPNA 2019-2022 Research Agenda: Development and Rationale.

Project description:Building on the strong work of previous research agendas (2009-2012, 2012-2015, 2015-2018), the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association Research Advisory Council developed the 2019-2022 Research Agenda in consultation with Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) membership and assessment of major trends in palliative nursing. The HPNA Research Advisory Council identified 5 priority areas and asked subject experts in each area to summarize the state of the science, identify critical gaps, and provide recommendations for future research. This document expands the executive summary published on the HPNA website (www.advancingexpertcare.org/hpna/) and provides supporting evidence for the 2019-2022 recommendations. The 5 priority areas are as follows: (1) pediatric hospice and palliative nursing research; (2) family caregiving; (3) interprofessional education and collaborative practice; (4) big data science, precision health, and nursing informatics; and (5) implementation science.

The past and future of tuberculosis research.

Project description:Renewed efforts in tuberculosis (TB) research have led to important new insights into the biology and epidemiology of this devastating disease. Yet, in the face of the modern epidemics of HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and multidrug resistance--all of which contribute to susceptibility to TB--global control of the disease will remain a formidable challenge for years to come. New high-throughput genomics technologies are already contributing to studies of TB's epidemiology, comparative genomics, evolution, and host-pathogen interaction. We argue here, however, that new multidisciplinary approaches--especially the integration of epidemiology with systems biology in what we call "systems epidemiology"--will be required to eliminate TB.

Health Research in JFEI Over a Decade: 2009-2019.

Project description:This article is a review of thirty health-related articles published in the Journal of Family and Economic Issues from 2009 until 2019. This review discusses how the thirty studies have addressed broad areas of concern around health care access, health utilization and health status as well as health policy and implications and contributed to the advancement of knowledge in these areas. Articles mostly focused on health outcomes for families or demographic groups within families, with an emphasis on socio-economic inequalities and inequitable burdens faced. The emphasis over the last decade has been research on chronic or non-communicable health conditions and none on communicable diseases.

Major clinical research advances in gynecologic cancer in 2019.

Project description:In 2019, 12 topics were selected as the major research advances in gynecologic oncology. Herein, we first opted to introduce the significant clinical activity of pembrolizumab in women with advanced cervical cancer based on the results of the phase 2 KEYNOTE-158 trial. Thereafter, we reviewed 5 topics, including systemic lymphadenectomy in the advanced stage with no gross residual tumor, secondary cytoreductive surgery in recurrent ovarian cancer according to the results of Gynecologic Oncology Group-213 trial, dose-dense weekly paclitaxel scheduling as first-line chemotherapy, the utility of intraperitoneal therapy in the advanced stage, and an update on poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors for the treatment of ovarian cancer. Additionally, we conducted a thorough review of emerging data from several clinical trials on PARP inhibitors according to drug, target population, and combined usage. For uterine corpus cancer, we reviewed adjuvant therapy for high-risk disease and chemotherapy in advanced/recurrent disease. For the field of radiation oncology, we discussed the utility of neoadjuvant chemotherapy added to chemoradiotherapy and the treatment of radiation-induced cystitis using hyperbaric oxygen. Finally, we discussed the use of individualized therapy with humanized monoclonal antibodies (trastuzumab emtansine and sacituzumab govitecan-hziy) and combination therapy (fulvestrant plus alpesilib, fulvestrant plus anastrozole, and ribociclib plus endocrine therapy) for women with advanced breast cancer.

Priorities for tuberculosis research: a systematic review.

Project description:Reliable and relevant research can help to improve tuberculosis control worldwide. In recent years, various organisations have assessed research needs and proposed priorities for tuberculosis. We summarise existing priority statements and assess the rigour of the methods used to generate them. We found 33 documents that specifically outline priorities in tuberculosis research. The top priority areas were drug development (28 articles), diagnosis and diagnostic tests (27), epidemiology (20), health services research (16), basic research (13), and vaccine development and use (13). The most focused questions were on the treatment and prevention of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in people co-infected with HIV. Methods used to identify these priorities were varied. Improvements can be made to ensure the process is more rigorous and transparent, and to use existing research or systematic reviews more often. WHO, Stop TB Partnership, and other organisations could adopt an incremental process of priority development, building on the existing knowledge base.
