Fatty acid-induced upregulation of death receptor 5 (DR5) and its cognate ligand, tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), promotes hepatocyte lipoapoptosis, which is a key mechanism in the progression of fatty liver disease.
