Numerous bacteriophages-viruses of bacteria, also known as phages-have been described for hundreds of bacterial species. The Gram-negative <i>Shigella</i> species are close relatives of <i>Escherichia coli</i>, yet relatively few previously described phages appear to exclusively infect this genus.
