COVID-19 and Supply Chain Disruption: Evidence from Food Markets in India^†.

ABSTRACT: This paper looks at the disruption in food supply chains due to COVID-19 induced economic shutdown in India. We use a novel dataset from one of the largest online grocery retailers to look at the impact on product stockouts and prices. We find that product availability falls by 10% for vegetables, fruits, and edible oils, but there is a minimal impact on their prices. On the farm-gate side, it is matched by a 20% fall in quantity arrivals of vegetables and fruits. We then show that supply chain disruption is the main driver behind this fall. We compute the distance to production zones from our retail centers and find that the fall in product availability and quantity arrivals is larger for items that are cultivated or manufactured farther from the final point of sale. Our results show that long-distance food supply chains have been hit the hardest during the current pandemic with welfare consequences for urban consumers and farmers.

Green, resilient, agile, and sustainable fresh food supply chain enablers: evidence from India.

Project description:The existing research on fresh food supply chains (FFSC) sustainability consisting of fur fundamental pillars, namely green (G), resilient (R), agile (A), and sustainability (S) (hereafter GRAS), is explored sparsely and needs thorough investigation. Further, conceptualization and mutual interactions among GRAS enablers that can help perpetuate sustainable supply chains (SSC) still need to be addressed. This study proposes a methodological framework to evaluate the SCS from the perspective of GRAS enablers with an application for the Indian FFSC. A mixed-method sequential approach was used with interviews followed by integrated fuzzy interpretive structural modelling-decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (FISM-DEMATEL) techniques. The study recognizes twenty supply chain sustainability (SCS) enablers through an extensive literature review and discussions with the expert group. The research discloses that the firms' 'organization culture' acts as the most powerful driver in achieving sustainability in FFSC, followed by the firms' 'environmental certification program' and 'financial strength.' This investigation helps the managers/policymakers of the Indian FFSC to ascertain and comprehend the most significant SCS enablers to achieve sustainability in the supply chain (SC). The causation of SCS enablers supports the managers in systematically focusing on the most significant enablers and working towards their successful implementation. According to our knowledge, this is the first scholarly work that establishes hierarchies and interrelationships among GRAS enablers, thereby providing a holistic picture to decision-makers while adapting such practices.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10479-023-05176-x.

Impact of COVID-19 on vegetable supply chain and food security: Empirical evidence from Bangladesh.

Project description:In Bangladesh, the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have substantial effects on the livelihood of people, but smallholder vegetables growers will be even more affected because of the perishability nature of the product. The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Bangladesh on 8th March, 2020 and consequently the country went into lockdown on 26 March, 2020. This study has made a survey of vegetables farmers through a mobile phone to understand the impact of COVID-19 on vegetables supply chain, gross margin and the future production plan of the growers. In Bangladesh, the lockdown has disrupted the food supply chain and increases the likelihood of food insecurity. Lockdown has impeded vegetable farmers' access to markets, thus limiting their productive and sales capacities. The price of yield has dropped by more than half resulting in huge loss for vegetable growers. The loss incurred by the farmers for producing Brinjal, Cucumber, Pointed gourd, Yardlong beans and Bottle gourd are BDT 4900, BDT 10900, BDT 57400, BDT 52500 and BDT 18500 per acre respectively as a result of COVID-19. The decreased income increases farmers' likelihood of vulnerability and food insecurity and poses a challenge to continued produce. 'Cash support' is more important than 'food support' in order to keep vegetable farmers in farming, to ensure a ready supply of necessary low-cost resources, and to help fight against the upcoming food shortage.

Food fraud and mitigating strategies of UK food supply chain during COVID-19.

Project description:Covid-19 had shown the vulnerability of the food supply chain and fraudsters may take advantage of the pandemic whilst the population needed a continuous supply of safe and quality food. The lack of monitoring and policing in the food supply chain may encourage fraudsters to upscale their operations. Previous studies had warned of a surge in fraudulent products due to COVID-19. This raised the question on whether food fraud had increased during the pandemic? This study aims to investigate food fraud during COVID-19 and how the food supply chain develops mitigating strategies against fraudulent activities. A mixed-method approach including survey and semi-structured interviews were conducted among UK food businesses. Two hundred and two agri-food businesses responded to the survey and 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted. The majority of the food businesses did not experience an increase of food fraud activities during COVID-19. Two thematic domains and ten sub-themes were identified from the data set. There was a heightened sense of anticipation and preparation for increased fraudulent activities during the pandemic. The main risk mitigating strategies included horizon scanning; developing and maintaining supplier relationship and assurance; understanding product characteristics, testing capabilities, conducting vulnerability assessments and training. Practical and cost-effective strategies for small and medium food businesses were recommended. This is the first empirical study on food fraud and mitigating strategies of the UK food supply chain during the pandemic. Our findings provide evidence for informing the policies and practices of the food regulatory authorities as well as best practices to protect the UK food supply chain against food fraud during exogenous shocks like COVID-19.

Labor Issues in the Food Supply Chain Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Project description:The impacts of COVID-19 on labor in the food supply chain and on workers' decisions to accept essential jobs are discussed. We then analyze surveys administered to low-skilled domestic workers before and during the pandemic to assess respondents' attitudes toward food production, guest workers, immigration policy, and the government's response to COVID-19. Results suggest the outbreak resulted in respondents, on average, shifting their view toward food being a national security issue and a higher degree of empathy for H-2A workers. Regression analysis shows that gender, current agricultural workers, and information on COVID-19 and agricultural field workers influenced respondents' answers.

Preferences for sustainability and supply chain worker conditions: Evidence during COVID-19.

Project description:Given coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), we empirically investigate whether consumers are willing to pay for greater sustainability and safer working conditions in food supply chains. We elicit consumer valuation via two consumer choice survey experiments and revealed preferences using mixed Logit discrete choice models. We find that consumers have a significant positive average valuation towards sustainability, but may require an average compensation to choose products produced under safer working conditions. Policy implications suggest a market-based potential to nudge consumer segments who desire value congruence in their diet, namely, by revealing information through labeling.

Modelling supply chain sustainability challenges in the food processing sector amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Project description:The recent COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted most businesses and their supply chains. Due to the negative impacts of COVID-19, businesses have been facing numerous challenges. Among them, sustainability challenges are critical for any supply chain. In the literature, several studies have discussed the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on supply chains; however, there is a significant research gap in analysing supply chain sustainability challenges amid the COVID-19 outbreak in a particular context. To fill this research gap, this study aims to develop a systematic approach to identifying and analysing COVID-19 outbreak-related supply chain sustainability challenges in the context of the Australian food processing sector. To achieve the aims, this paper develops a mixed-method approach consisting of both qualitative and quantitative techniques, namely online survey and the Best-Worst method. From the online survey among experts from the Australian food processing sector, 22 sustainability challenges were finalised and categorised into four categories, namely, economic, environmental, social and ethical, and operational challenges. The empirical findings from the exploratory investigation reveal that increased food processing cost, lack of transparency and traceability, increase in price of raw materials, lack of capital and physical resources, and spread of fake information are the top five sustainability challenges to the Australian food processing sector due to the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak. The findings of this study will help decision-makers, practitioners, and policymakers by developing the policies, guidelines, and strategies to overcome the most impactful sustainability challenges to ensure sustainable recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Coronavirus disease outbreak and supply chain disruption: Evidence from Taiwanese firms in China

Project description:Graphical abstract This study applies an empirical analysis to examine whether supply chain disruption is caused by the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that was first reported in Wuhan, China, on December 31, 2019. The study’s findings indicate a link between the COVID-19 outbreak and the disruption of logistics and supply chains along with negative cumulative abnormal returns within Taiwanese firms manufacturing products in China and marketing them globally. This is the first study to examine the outbreak of the COVID-19 and the disruption of the supply chain and its effect on the stock market. The empirical results provide insights for business management in reconsidering their global supply chain strategies for the risk of disruption caused by similar epidemics occurs in the future.

Optimal planning of the COVID-19 vaccine supply chain.

Project description:This work presents a novel framework to simultaneously address the optimal planning of COVID-19 vaccine supply chains and the optimal planning of daily vaccinations in the available vaccination centres. A new mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to generate optimal decisions regarding the transferred quantities between locations, the inventory profiles of central hubs and vaccination centres and the daily vaccination plans in the vaccination centres of the supply chain network. Specific COVID-19 characteristics, such as special cold storage technologies, limited shelf-life of mRNA vaccines in refrigerated conditions and demanding vaccination targets under extreme time pressure, are aptly modelled. The goal of the model is the minimization of total costs, including storage and transportation costs, costs related to fleet and staff requirements, as well as, indirect costs imposed by wasted doses. A two-step decomposition strategy based on a divide-and-conquer and an aggregation approach is proposed for the solution of large-scale problems. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed optimization-based framework is illustrated on a study case that simulates the Greek nationwide vaccination program. Finally, a rolling horizon technique is employed to reactively deal with possible disturbances in the vaccination plans. The proposed mathematical framework facilitates the decision-making process in COVID-19 vaccine supply chains into minimizing the underlying costs and the number of doses lost. As a result, the efficiency of the distribution network is improved, thus assisting the mass vaccination campaigns against COVID-19.

COVID-19 pandemic related supply chain studies: A systematic review.

Project description:The global spread of the novel coronavirus, also known as the COVID-19 pandemic, has had a devastating impact on supply chains. Since the pandemic started, scholars have been researching and publishing their studies on the various supply-chain-related issues raised by COVID-19. However, while the number of articles on this subject has been steadily increasing, due to the absence of any systematic literature reviews, it remains unclear what aspects of this disruption have already been studied and what aspects still need to be investigated. The present study systematically reviews existing research on the COVID-19 pandemic in supply chain disciplines. Through a rigorous and systematic search, we identify 74 relevant articles published on or before 28 September 2020. The synthesis of the findings reveals that four broad themes recur in the published work: namely, impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, resilience strategies for managing impacts and recovery, the role of technology in implementing resilience strategies, and supply chain sustainability in the light of the pandemic. Alongside the synthesis of the findings, this study describes the methodologies, context, and theories used in each piece of research. Our analysis reveals that there is a lack of empirically designed and theoretically grounded studies in this area; hence, the generalizability of the findings, thus far, is limited. Moreover, the analysis reveals that most studies have focused on supply chains for high-demand essential goods and healthcare products, while low-demand items and SMEs have been largely ignored. We also review the literature on prior epidemic outbreaks and other disruptions in supply chain disciplines. By considering the findings of these articles alongside research on the COVID-19 pandemic, this study offers research questions and directions for further investigation. These directions can guide scholars in designing and conducting impactful research in the field.
