<i>Sardinella tawilis</i>, the only known freshwater sardinella in the world, is endemic to Taal Lake, Philippines. Previous studies found the Taiwan sardinella, <i>S. hualiensis</i>, to be morphologically very similar to <i>S. tawilis</i> and identified it as the marine sister species of <i>S. tawilis</i>.
