Rice, <i>Oryza sativa</i> L., is a cultivated, inbreeding species that serves as the staple food for the largest number of people on earth. It has two strongly diverged varietal groups, <i>Indica</i> and <i>Japonica</i>, which result from a combination of natural and human selection.
