Project description:This study was done to characterize distribution of Rickettsia spp. in ticks in the northwestern and southwestern provinces in the Republic of Korea. A total of 2,814 ticks were collected between May and September 2009. After pooling, 284 tick DNA samples were screened for a gene of Rickettsia-specific 17-kDa protein using nested PCR (nPCR), and produced 88 nPCR positive samples. Of these positives, 75% contained 190-kDa outer membrane protein gene (ompA), 50% 120-kDa outer membrane protein gene (ompB), and 64.7% gene D (sca4). The nPCR products of ompA, ompB, and sca4 genes revealed close relatedness to Rickettsia japonica, R. heilongjiangensis, and R. monacensis. Most Rickettsia species were detected in Haemaphysalis longicornis. This tick was found a dominant vector of rickettsiae in the study regions in the Republic of Korea.

Project description:Mixed-anion systems have garnered much attention in the past decade with attractive properties for diverse applications such as energy conversion, electronics, and catalysis. The discovery of new materials through mixed-cation and single-anion systems proved highly successful in the previous century, but solid-state chemists are now embracing an exciting design opportunity by incorporating multiple anions in compounds such as oxychalcogenides. Materials containing rare-earth ions are arguably a cornerstone of modern technology, and herein, we review recent advances in rare-earth oxychalcogenides. We discuss ternary rare-earth oxychalcogenides whose layered structures illustrate the characters and bonding preferences of oxide and chalcogenide anions. We then review quaternary compounds which combine anionic and cationic design strategies toward materials discovery and describe their structural diversity. Finally, we emphasize the progression from layered two-dimensional compounds to three-dimensional networks and the unique synthetic approaches which enable this advancement.

Project description:Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a crucial disease for wheat worldwide and constantly threatens wheat production in southwestern and northwestern China, where the environment is a good fit for Pst oversummering and overwintering. However, the underlying genetic dynamics of spring epidemic Pst populations across large areas of continuous planting in the southwestern and northwestern regions are poorly understood. A total of 2,103 Pst isolates were sampled in the spring of 2019 from the two agroecosystems and grouped into three horizontal spatial scales (countywide, provincial, and regional subpopulations) and two vertical spatial scales that consisted of elevational and geomorphic subpopulations. A total of 776 multilocus genotypes were identified, with the highest genetic diversity found in the northern and Sichuan populations, particularly in the Ningxia and Sichuan Basins, while the lowest genetic diversity was found in the Yunnan and Guizhou populations. Multivariate discriminant analysis of principal components (DAPC) and STRUCTURE (STRUCTURE 2.3.4) analyses revealed variation in the genotypic compositions of the molecular groups on horizontal and vertical dimensions from north to south or vice versa and from low to high or vice versa, respectively. The regional neighbor-joining tree revealed three large spatial structures consisting of the southwestern, the northwestern, and the Xinjiang regions, while the Tibetan population connected the southwestern and northwestern regions. The isolates of the Sichuan Basin were scattered over the four quartiles by principal coordinate analysis, which indicated frequent genotype interchange with others. Greater genetic differentiation was observed between the southwestern and northwestern regions. Linkage equilibrium (P ≥ 0.05) was detected on different spatial scales, suggesting that Pst populations are using sexual reproduction or mixed reproduction (sexual and clonal reproduction) in southwestern and northwestern China. IMPORTANCE Understanding the epidemiology and population genetics of plant pathogens is crucial to formulate efficient predictions of disease outbreaks and achieve sustainable integrated disease management, especially for pathogens with migratory capability. Here, this study covers the genetic homogeneity and heterogeneity of different geographical Pst populations on broad to fine spatial scales from the key epidemic regions of the two agroecosystems in China, where wheat stripe rust occurs annually. We provide knowledge of the population genetics of Pst and reveal that, for instance, there is greater genetic diversity in northwestern China, there are close genetic relationships between Yunnan and Guizhou and between Gansu-Ningxia and Qinghai, and there are effects of altitude on genetic compositions, etc. All of these findings clarify the genetic relationships and expand the insights into the population dynamics and evolutionary mechanisms of Pst in southwestern and northwestern China, providing a theoretical basis for achieving sustainable control of wheat stripe rust in key epidemic regions.

Project description:A dramatic expansion of road building is underway in the Congo Basin fuelled by private enterprise, international aid, and government aspirations. Among the great wilderness areas on earth, the Congo Basin is outstanding for its high biodiversity, particularly mobile megafauna including forest elephants (Loxodonta africana cyclotis). The abundance of many mammal species in the Basin increases with distance from roads due to hunting pressure, but the impacts of road proliferation on the movements of individuals are unknown. We investigated the ranging behaviour of forest elephants in relation to roads and roadless wilderness by fitting GPS telemetry collars onto a sample of 28 forest elephants living in six priority conservation areas. We show that the size of roadless wilderness is a strong determinant of home range size in this species. Though our study sites included the largest wilderness areas in central African forests, none of 4 home range metrics we calculated, including core area, tended toward an asymptote with increasing wilderness size, suggesting that uninhibited ranging in forest elephants no longer exists. Furthermore we show that roads outside protected areas which are not protected from hunting are a formidable barrier to movement while roads inside protected areas are not. Only 1 elephant from our sample crossed an unprotected road. During crossings her mean speed increased 14-fold compared to normal movements. Forest elephants are increasingly confined and constrained by roads across the Congo Basin which is reducing effective habitat availability and isolating populations, significantly threatening long term conservation efforts. If the current road development trajectory continues, forest wildernesses and the forest elephants they contain will collapse.

Project description:Tuberculosis is a leading cause of illness and death in Congo. No data are available about the population structure and transmission dynamics of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains prevalent in this central Africa country. On the basis of single-nucleotide polymorphisms detected by whole-genome sequencing, we phylogenetically characterized 74 MTBC isolates from Brazzaville, the capital of Congo. The diversity of the study population was high; most strains belonged to the Euro-American lineage, which split into Latin American Mediterranean, Uganda I, Uganda II, Haarlem, X type, and a new dominant sublineage named Congo type (n = 26). Thirty strains were grouped in 5 clusters (each within 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms), from which 23 belonged to the Congo type. High cluster rates and low genomic diversity indicate recent emergence and transmission of the Congo type, a new Euro-American sublineage of MTBC.

Project description:The data presented in this article are related to research to the research article entitled 'Petrology and Geochemistry Data of the Precambrian granitoids from the Hyderabad part of Eastern Dharwar Craton, Telangana state, India'. The granitoids from the Hyderabad area of the Telangana State are confined to the Precambrian gneissic complex of the northern-eastern part of Eastern Dharwar Craton. They cover 7760?Sq. km of the study area and fall between latitudes 16° 52'-17°42' N and between East longitudes 77° 21'-77° 51' E. The granitoids are mainly classified into grey and pink granites, granodiorites and aplites. The field studies are understood they occasionally contain older mafic enclaves in the form of lensoid bodies and thin bands and cut by younger dolerite dykes, pegmatite and quartz veins and laboratory investigations resolved the classification of the granitods and their chemical histories.

Project description:The Earth's magnetic field has operated for at least 3.4 billion years, yet how the ancient field was produced is still unknown. The core in the early Earth was surrounded by a molten silicate layer, a basal magma ocean that may have survived for more than one billion years. Here we use density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations to predict the electrical conductivity of silicate liquid at the conditions of the basal magma ocean: 100-140 GPa, and 4000-6000 K. We find that the electrical conductivity exceeds 10,000 S/m, more than 100 times that measured in silicate liquids at low pressure and temperature. The magnetic Reynolds number computed from our results exceeds the threshold for dynamo activity and the magnetic field strength is similar to that observed in the Archean paleomagnetic record. We therefore conclude that the Archean field was produced by the basal magma ocean.

Project description:In Ukraine, a retrospective review of clinical case reports by public health officials suggest that human cases of febrile illnesses associated with hemorrhage may be due to infections of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and Old World hantaviruses. In a serosurvey of 966 healthy individuals in the Lviv Oblast, Ukraine, bordering Poland, we found that 1.6% showed cross-reactivity to hantaviral antigens by an immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and 1.7% of the study participants had antibodies cross-reactive to CCHFV by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Demographic variables and history of exposures obtained through questionnaires were assessed by logistic regression models for association with seroprevalence for both viruses with no significant risk factors found. Analysis of spatial distribution identified two clusters of samples positive for antibodies to both hantaviruses and CCHFV, which, however, were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In general, the study results suggest that the population of the study area is exposed to hantaviruses and CCHFV. Further surveillance for respective pathogens in Ukraine is warranted and prospective surveillance of febrile patients with unidentified febrile illness.

Project description:The Amazon witnessed the emergence of complex societies after 2500 years ago that altered tropical landscapes through intensive agriculture and managed aquatic systems. However, very little is known about the context and conditions that preceded these social and environmental transformations. Here, we demonstrate that forest islands in the Llanos de Moxos of southwestern Amazonia contain human burials and represent the earliest settlements in the region between 10,600 and 4000 years ago. These archaeological sites and their contents represent the earliest evidence of communities that experienced conditions conducive to engaging with food production such as environmental stability, resource disturbance, and increased territoriality in the Amazonian tropical lowlands.
