Gallium phosphide optical metasurfaces for visible light applications.

ABSTRACT: There are few materials that are broadly used for fabricating optical metasurfaces for visible light applications. Gallium phosphide (GaP) is a material that, due to its optical properties, has the potential to become a primary choice but due to the difficulties in fabrication, GaP thin films deposited on transparent substrates have never been exploited. In this article we report the design, fabrication, and characterization of three different amorphous GaP metasurfaces obtained through sputtering. Although the material properties can be further optimized, our results show the potential of this material for visible applications making it a viable alternative in the material selection for optical metasurfaces.

Optical Properties of Strained Wurtzite Gallium Phosphide Nanowires.

Project description:Wurtzite gallium phosphide (WZ GaP) has been predicted to exhibit a direct bandgap in the green spectral range. Optical transitions, however, are only weakly allowed by the symmetry of the bands. While efficient luminescence has been experimentally shown, the nature of the transitions is not yet clear. Here we apply tensile strain up to 6% and investigate the evolution of the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of WZ GaP nanowires (NWs). The pressure and polarization dependence of the emission together with a theoretical analysis of strain effects is employed to establish the nature and symmetry of the transitions. We identify the emission lines to be related to localized states with significant admixture of ?7c symmetry and not exclusively related to the ?8c conduction band minimum (CBM). The results emphasize the importance of strongly bound state-related emission in the pseudodirect semiconductor WZ GaP and contribute significantly to the understanding of the optoelectronic properties of this novel material.

Optical Absorption Exhibits Pseudo-Direct Band Gap of Wurtzite Gallium Phosphide.

Project description:Definitive evidence for the direct band gap predicted for Wurtzite Gallium Phosphide (WZ GaP) nanowires has remained elusive due to the lack of strong band-to-band luminescence in these materials. In order to circumvent this problem, we successfully obtained large volume WZ GaP structures grown by nanoparticle-crawling assisted Vapor-Liquid-Solid method. With these structures, we were able to observe bound exciton recombination at 2.14?eV with FHWM of approximately 1?meV. In addition, we have measured the optical absorption edges using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy. Our results show a 10?K band gap at 2.19?eV and indicate a weak oscillator strength for the lowest energy band-to-band absorption edge, which is a characteristic feature of a pseudo-direct band gap semiconductor. Furthermore, the valence band splitting energies are estimated as 110?meV and 30?meV for the three highest bands. Electronic band structure calculations using the HSE06 hybrid density functional agree qualitatively with the valence band splitting energies.

Ultrafast sub-30-fs all-optical switching based on gallium phosphide.

Project description:Gallium phosphide (GaP) is one of the few available materials with strong optical nonlinearity and negligible losses in the visible (λ > 450 nm) and near-infrared regime. In this work, we demonstrate that a GaP film can generate sub-30-fs (full width at half maximum) transmission modulation of up to ~70% in the 600- to 1000-nm wavelength range. Nonlinear simulations using parameters measured by the Z-scan approach indicate that the transmission modulation arises from the optical Kerr effect and two-photon absorption. Because of the absence of linear absorption, no slower free-carrier contribution is detected. These findings place GaP as a promising ultrafast material for all-optical switching at modulation speeds of up to 20 THz.

Microwave-to-optical conversion with a gallium phosphide photonic crystal cavity.

Project description:Electrically actuated optomechanical resonators provide a route to quantum-coherent, bidirectional conversion of microwave and optical photons. Such devices could enable optical interconnection of quantum computers based on qubits operating at microwave frequencies. Here we present a platform for microwave-to-optical conversion comprising a photonic crystal cavity made of single-crystal, piezoelectric gallium phosphide integrated on pre-fabricated niobium circuits on an intrinsic silicon substrate. The devices exploit spatially extended, sideband-resolved mechanical breathing modes at ~3.2 GHz, with vacuum optomechanical coupling rates of up to g0/2π ≈ 300 kHz. The mechanical modes are driven by integrated microwave electrodes via the inverse piezoelectric effect. We estimate that the system could achieve an electromechanical coupling rate to a superconducting transmon qubit of ~200 kHz. Our work represents a decisive step towards integration of piezoelectro-optomechanical interfaces with superconducting quantum processors.

High-Efficiency Visible Light Manipulation Using Dielectric Metasurfaces.

Project description:The development of a miniaturised device that provides efficient beam manipulation with high transmittance is extremely desirable for the broad range of applications including holography, metalens, and imaging. Recently, the potential of dielectric metasurfaces has been unleashed to efficiently manipulate the beam with full 2π-phase control by overlapping the electric and magnetic dipole resonances. However, in the visible range for available materials, it comes with the price of higher absorption that reduces efficiency. Here, we have considered dielectric amorphous silicon (a-Si) nanodisk and engineered them in such a way which provides minimal absorption loss in the visible range. We have experimentally demonstrated meta-deflector with high transmittance which operates in the visible wavelengths. The supercell of proposed meta-deflector consists of 15 amorphous silicon nanodisks numerically shows the transmission efficiency of 95% and deflection efficiency of 95% at operating wavelength of 715 nm. However, experimentally measured transmission and deflection efficiencies are 83% and 71%, respectively, having the experimental deflection angle of 8.40°. Nevertheless, by reducing the supercell length, the deflection angle can be controlled, and the value 15.50° was experimentally achieved using eight disks supercell. Our results suggest a new way to realise the highly transmittance metadevice with full 2π-phase control operating with the visible light which could be applicable in the imaging, metalens, holography, and display applications.

Optical metasurfaces for high angle steering at visible wavelengths.

Project description:Metasurfaces have facilitated the replacement of conventional optical elements with ultrathin and planar photonic structures. Previous designs of metasurfaces were limited to small deflection angles and small ranges of the angle of incidence. Here, we have created two types of Si-based metasurfaces to steer visible light to a large deflection angle. These structures exhibit high diffraction efficiencies over a broad range of angles of incidence. We have demonstrated metasurfaces working both in transmission and reflection modes based on conventional thin film silicon processes that are suitable for the large-scale fabrication of high-performance devices.

Optical Anapole Modes in Gallium Phosphide Nanodisk with Forked Slits for Electric Field Enhancement.

Project description:High refractive index dielectric nanostructures represent a new frontier in nanophotonics, and the unique semiconductor characteristics of dielectric systems make it possible to enhance electric fields by exploiting this fundamental physical phenomenon. In this work, the scattered radiation spectral features and field-enhanced interactions of gallium phosphide disks with forked slits at anapole modes are investigated systematically by numerical and multipole decomposition analyses. Additional enhancement of the electric field is achieved by opening the forked slits to create high-intensity hot spots inside the disk, and nearby molecules can access these hot spots directly. The results reveal a novel approach for near-field engineering such as electric field localization, nonlinear optics, and optical detection.

Manipulation of visible-light polarization with dendritic cell-cluster metasurfaces.

Project description:Cross-polarization conversion plays an important role in visible light manipulation. Metasurface with asymmetric structure can be used to achieve polarization conversion of linearly polarized light. Based on this, we design a quasi-periodic dendritic metasurface model composed of asymmetric dendritic cells. The simulation indicates that the asymmetric dendritic structure can vertically rotate the polarization direction of the linear polarization wave in visible light. Silver dendritic cell-cluster metasurface samples were prepared by the bottom-up electrochemical deposition. It experimentally proved that they could realize the cross - polarization conversion in visible light. Cross-polarized propagating light is deflected into anomalous refraction channels. Dendritic cell-cluster metasurface with asymmetric quasi-periodic structure conveys significance in cross-polarization conversion research and features extensive practical application prospect and development potential.

Efficient ultrafast all-optical modulation in a nonlinear crystalline gallium phosphide nanodisk at the anapole excitation.

Project description:High-refractive index nanostructured dielectrics have the ability to locally enhance electromagnetic fields with low losses while presenting high third-order nonlinearities. In this work, we exploit these characteristics to achieve efficient ultrafast all-optical modulation in a crystalline gallium phosphide (GaP) nanoantenna through the optical Kerr effect (OKE) and two-photon absorption (TPA) in the visible/near-infrared range. We show that an individual GaP nanodisk can yield differential reflectivity modulations of up to ~40%, with characteristic modulation times between 14 and 66 fs, when probed at the anapole excitation (AE). Numerical simulations reveal that the AE represents a unique condition where both the OKE and TPA contribute with the same modulation sign, maximizing the response. These findings highly outperform previous reports on sub-100-fs all-optical switching from resonant nanoscale dielectrics, which have demonstrated modulation depths no larger than 0.5%, placing GaP nanoantennas as a promising choice for ultrafast all-optical modulation at the nanometer scale.

Efficient water reduction with gallium phosphide nanowires.

Project description:Photoelectrochemical hydrogen production from solar energy and water offers a clean and sustainable fuel option for the future. Planar III/V material systems have shown the highest efficiencies, but are expensive. By moving to the nanowire regime the demand on material quantity is reduced, and new materials can be uncovered, such as wurtzite gallium phosphide, featuring a direct bandgap. This is one of the few materials combining large solar light absorption and (close to) ideal band-edge positions for full water splitting. Here we report the photoelectrochemical reduction of water, on a p-type wurtzite gallium phosphide nanowire photocathode. By modifying geometry to reduce electrical resistance and enhance optical absorption, and modifying the surface with a multistep platinum deposition, high current densities and open circuit potentials were achieved. Our results demonstrate the capabilities of this material, even when used in such low quantities, as in nanowires.
