The Influence of Carbon Nature on the Catalytic Performance of Ru/C in Levulinic Acid Hydrogenation with Internal Hydrogen Source.

ABSTRACT: The influence of the nature of carbon materials used as a support for Ru/C catalysts on levulinic acid hydrogenation with formic acid as a hydrogen source toward gamma-valerolactone was investigated. It has been shown that the physicochemical properties of carbon strongly affect the catalytic activity of Ru catalysts. The relationship between the hydrogen mobility, strength of hydrogen adsorption, and catalytic performance was established. The catalyst possessing the highest number of defects, stimulating metal support interaction, exhibited the highest activity. The effect of the catalyst grain size was also studied. It was shown that the decrease in the grain size resulted in the formation of smaller Ru crystallites on the catalyst surface, which facilitates the activity.

Ru@hyperbranched Polymer for Hydrogenation of Levulinic Acid to Gamma-Valerolactone: The Role of the Catalyst Support.

Project description:Hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) obtained from cellulose biomass is a promising path for production of γ-valerolactone (GVL)-a component of biofuel. In this work, we developed Ru nanoparticle containing nanocomposites based on hyperbranched pyridylphenylene polymer, serving as multiligand and stabilizing matrix. The functionalization of the nanocomposite with sulfuric acid significantly enhances the activity of the catalyst in the selective hydrogenation of LA to GVL and allows the reaction to proceed under mild reaction conditions (100 °C, 2 MPa of H2) in water and low catalyst loading (0.016 mol.%) with a quantitative yield of GVL and selectivity up to 100%. The catalysts were successfully reused four times without a significant loss of activity. A comprehensive physicochemical characterization of the catalysts allowed us to assess structure-property relationships and to uncover an important role of the polymeric support in the efficient GVL synthesis.

High performing and stable supported nano-alloys for the catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid to ?-valerolactone.

Project description:The catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid, a key platform molecule in many biorefinery schemes, into ?-valerolactone is considered as one of the pivotal reactions to convert lignocellulose-based biomass into renewable fuels and chemicals. Here we report on the development of highly active, selective and stable supported metal catalysts for this reaction and on the beneficial effects of metal nano-alloying. Bimetallic random alloys of gold-palladium and ruthenium-palladium supported on titanium dioxide are prepared with a modified metal impregnation method. Gold-palladium/titanium dioxide shows a marked,~27-fold increase in activity (that is, turnover frequency of 0.1?s(-1)) compared with its monometallic counterparts. Although ruthenium-palladium/titanium dioxide is not only exceptionally active (that is, turnover frequency of 0.6?s(-1)), it shows excellent, sustained selectivity to ?-valerolactone (99%). The dilution and isolation of ruthenium by palladium is thought to be responsible for this superior catalytic performance. Alloying, furthermore, greatly improves the stability of both supported nano-alloy catalysts.

Selective hydrogenation via precise hydrogen bond interactions on catalytic scaffolds.

Project description:The active site environment in enzymes has been known to affect catalyst performance through weak interactions with a substrate, but precise synthetic control of enzyme inspired heterogeneous catalysts remains challenging. Here, we synthesize hyper-crosslinked porous polymer (HCPs) with solely -OH or -CH3 groups on the polymer scaffold to tune the environment of active sites. Reaction rate measurements, spectroscopic techniques, along with DFT calculations show that HCP-OH catalysts enhance the hydrogenation rate of H-acceptor substrates containing carbonyl groups whereas hydrophobic HCP- CH3 ones promote non-H bond substrate activation. The functional groups go beyond enhancing substrate adsorption to partially activate the C = O bond and tune the catalytic sites. They also expose selectivity control in the hydrogenation of multifunctional substrates through preferential substrate functional group adsorption. The proposed synthetic strategy opens a new class of porous polymers for selective catalysis.

Heterogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation of 3-Phenylpropionitrile over Palladium on Carbon.

Project description:A previously developed and industrially feasible process for selective, Pd-mediated, liquid-phase heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles to primary amines was extended to the reduction of 3-phenylpropionitrile (PPN) to 3-phenylpropylamine (PPA). PPN, which belongs to the homologous series of benzonitrile (BN) and benzyl cyanide (BC), was hydrogenated under mild reaction conditions (30-80 °C, 6 bar), over Pd/C, in two immiscible solvents (dichloromethane/water) and using acidic additives (NaH2PO4 and H2SO4). Although relatively high conversion (76%) was achieved, the selectivity to PPA (26%) and its isolated yield (20%) were lesser than those in the case of the hydrogenation of BN or BC reported earlier. However, the purity of PPA was >99% without using any purification method. Quantum chemical calculations using a density functional theory (DFT) method were performed to compare the adsorption interactions of the different imine intermediates on palladium, as well as to clarify the differences observed in the primary amine selectivity. PPA is a valuable intermediate for the synthesis of carboxypeptidase B enzyme inhibitors, antimuscarinic drugs, or potential anticancer agents in the pharmaceutical industry.

Carbon Monoxide Promotes the Catalytic Hydrogenation on Metal Cluster Catalysts.

Project description:Size effect plays a crucial role in catalytic hydrogenation. The highly dispersed ultrasmall clusters with a limited number of metal atoms are one candidate of the next generation catalysts that bridge the single-atom metal catalysts and metal nanoparticles. However, for the unfavorable electronic property and their interaction with the substrates, they usually exhibit sluggish activity. Taking advantage of the small size, their catalytic property would be mediated by surface binding species. The combination of metal cluster coordination chemistry brings new opportunity. CO poisoning is notorious for Pt group metal catalysts as the strong adsorption of CO would block the active centers. In this work, we will demonstrate that CO could serve as a promoter for the catalytic hydrogenation when ultrasmall Pd clusters are employed. By means of DFT calculations, we show that Pd n (n = 2-147) clusters display sluggish activity for hydrogenation due to the too strong binding of hydrogen atom and reaction intermediates thereon, whereas introducing CO would reduce the binding energies of vicinal sites, thus enhancing the hydrogenation reaction. Experimentally, supported Pd2CO catalysts are fabricated by depositing preestablished [Pd2(μ-CO)2Cl4]2- clusters on oxides and demonstrated as an outstanding catalyst for the hydrogenation of styrene. The promoting effect of CO is further verified experimentally by removing and reintroducing a proper amount of CO on the Pd cluster catalysts.

Ru@Carbon Nanotube Composite Microsponge: Fabrication in Supercritical CO2 for Hydrogenation of p-Chloronitrobenzene.

Project description:Novel heterogeneous catalysts are needed to selectively anchor metal nanoparticles (NPs) into the internal space of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Here, supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) was used to fabricate the Ru@CNT composite microsponge via impregnation. Under SC-CO2 conditions, the highly dispersive Ru NPs, with a uniform diameter of 3 nm, were anchored exclusively into the internal space of CNTs. The CNTs are assembled into a microsponge composite. The supercritical temperature for catalyst preparation, catalytic hydrogenation temperature, and time all have a significant impact on the catalytic activity of Ru@CNTs. The best catalytic activity was obtained at 100 °C and 8.0 MPa: this gave excellent selectivity in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene at 100 °C. This assembly strategy assisted by SC-CO2 will be promising for the fabrication of advanced carbon composite powder materials.

Mechanochemical effects underlying the mechanically activated catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide.

Project description:In this work, we highlight and measure the intensity of mechanochemical effects at work in the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide by comparing the activity of a supported Co-Fe catalyst subjected, respectively, to ball milling and simple powder agitation. Paying due regard to the discontinuous nature of ball milling, we show that mechanochemical hydrogenation proceeds at significantly higher rate and disclose its connection with individual impacts. Experimental evidence suggests that the enhanced catalytic activity we observe can be ascribed to local processes affecting the amount of powder that gets involved in individual impacts.

Ru Single Atoms on One-Dimensional CF@g-C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>4</sub> Hierarchy as Highly Stable Catalysts for Aqueous Levulinic Acid Hydrogenation.

Project description:Herein, we report a stable catalyst with Ru single atoms anchored on a one-dimensional carbon fiber@graphitic carbon nitride hierarchy, by assembling wet wipes composed of fiber-derived carbon fiber (CF), melamine-derived graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and RuCl3 before NaBH4 reduction. The atomically dispersed Ru species (3.0 wt%) are tightly attached via N-coordination provided by exterior g-C3N4 nanosheets, and further stabilized by the interior mesoporous CF. The obtained CF@g-C3N4-Ru SAs catalyst can be cycled six times without notable leaching of Ru or loss of GVL yield in the acidic media. This catalyst is more stable than Ru nanoparticles supported on CF@g-C3N4, as well as Ru single atoms anchored on CF and g-C3N4, and proves to be one of the most efficient metal catalysts for aqueous LA hydrogenation to γ-valerolactone (GVL). The isolated Ru atoms by strong N-coordination, and their enhanced electron/mass transfer afforded by the one-dimensional hierarchy, can be responsible for the excellent durability of CF@g-C3N4-Ru SAs under harsh reaction conditions.

Carbon source competition within a wound can significantly influence infection progression.

Project description:It is becoming increasingly apparent that commensal skin bacteria have an important role in wound healing and infection progression. However, the precise mechanisms underpinning many of these probiotic interactions remain to be fully uncovered. In this work, we demonstrate that the common skin commensal Cutibacterium acnes can limit the pathogenicity of the prevalent wound pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vivo. We show that this impact on pathogenicity is independent of any effect on growth, but occurs through a significant down regulation of the Type Three Secretion System (T3SS), the primary toxin secretion system utilized by P. aeruginosa in eukaryotic infection. We also show a down regulation in glucose acquisition systems, a known regulator of the T3SS, suggesting that glucose availability in a wound can influence infection progression. This suggests that introducing carbon source competition within the wound microenvironment may be an effective way to prevent or limit wound infection.

A novel liquid organic hydrogen carrier system based on catalytic peptide formation and hydrogenation.

Project description:Hydrogen is an efficient green fuel, but its low energy density when stored under high pressure or cryogenically, and safety issues, presents significant disadvantages; hence finding efficient and safe hydrogen carriers is a major challenge. Of special interest are liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs), which can be readily loaded and unloaded with considerable amounts of hydrogen. However, disadvantages include high hydrogen pressure requirements, high reaction temperatures for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation steps, which require different catalysts, and high LOHC cost. Here we present a readily reversible LOHC system based on catalytic peptide formation and hydrogenation, using an inexpensive, safe and abundant organic compound with high potential capacity to store and release hydrogen, applying the same catalyst for loading and unloading hydrogen under relatively mild conditions. Mechanistic insight of the catalytic reaction is provided. We believe that these findings may lead to the development of an inexpensive, safe and clean liquid hydrogen carrier system.
