Gene mutations linked to lignin biosynthesis are responsible for the <i>brown midrib (bm)</i> phenotypes. The <i>bm</i> mutants have a brown-reddish midrib associated with changes in lignin content and composition. Maize <i>bm1</i> is caused by a mutation of the cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase gene <i>ZmCAD2</i>.
