A social differential outcomes learning task: Performance, EEG, and questionnaire data

ABSTRACT: This article contains performance data, questionnaire ratings, and EEG data from a differential outcomes learning task from two experiments. In both experiments, the standard differential outcomes learning task was extended to involve a social dimension, in order to capture how people can learn from others by observation. In Experiment 1 (N?=?20), using a within-subjects design, participants learned pairings of image stimuli in four conditions: 1) individual-differential outcomes, 2) individual-non-differential outcomes, 3) social-differential outcomes, and 4) social-non-differential outcomes. The social condition had a screen-captured video recording of the outcomes (but not the actions themselves) of another person performing the task. During the task, the performance of the participants was measured. After the task, participants rated their experience in a questionnaire. The procedure for Experiment 2 (N?=?33) was similar to Experiment 1, but with a stronger social manipulation using a video of another person's face showing facial expressions reflecting the outcomes. Group social rank is associated with performance on a spatial learning task.

Project description:Dominant individuals differ from subordinates in their performances on cognitive tasks across a suite of taxa. Previous studies often only consider dyadic relationships, rather than the more ecologically relevant social hierarchies or networks, hence failing to account for how dyadic relationships may be adjusted within larger social groups. We used a novel statistical method: randomized Elo-ratings, to infer the social hierarchy of 18 male pheasants, Phasianus colchicus, while in a captive, mixed-sex group with a linear hierarchy. We assayed individual learning performance of these males on a binary spatial discrimination task to investigate whether inter-individual variation in performance is associated with group social rank. Task performance improved with increasing trial number and was positively related to social rank, with higher ranking males showing greater levels of success. Motivation to participate in the task was not related to social rank or task performance, thus indicating that these rank-related differences are not a consequence of differences in motivation to complete the task. Our results provide important information about how variation in cognitive performance relates to an individual's social rank within a group. Whether the social environment causes differences in learning performance or instead, inherent differences in learning ability predetermine rank remains to be tested.

Estimating endogenous changes in task performance from EEG.

Project description:Brain wave activity is known to correlate with decrements in behavioral performance as individuals enter states of fatigue, boredom, or low alertness.Many BCI technologies are adversely affected by these changes in user state, limiting their application and constraining their use to relatively short temporal epochs where behavioral performance is likely to be stable. Incorporating a passive BCI that detects when the user is performing poorly at a primary task, and adapts accordingly may prove to increase overall user performance. Here, we explore the potential for extending an established method to generate continuous estimates of behavioral performance from ongoing neural activity; evaluating the extended method by applying it to the original task domain, simulated driving; and generalizing the method by applying it to a BCI-relevant perceptual discrimination task. Specifically, we used EEG log power spectra and sequential forward floating selection (SFFS) to estimate endogenous changes in behavior in both a simulated driving task and a perceptual discrimination task. For the driving task the average correlation coefficient between the actual and estimated lane deviation was 0.37 ± 0.22 (? ± ?). For the perceptual discrimination task we generated estimates of accuracy, reaction time, and button press duration for each participant. The correlation coefficients between the actual and estimated behavior were similar for these three metrics (accuracy = 0.25 ± 0.37, reaction time = 0.33 ± 0.23, button press duration = 0.36 ± 0.30). These findings illustrate the potential for modeling time-on-task decrements in performance from concurrent measures of neural activity.

BENDR: Using Transformers and a Contrastive Self-Supervised Learning Task to Learn From Massive Amounts of EEG Data.

Project description:Deep neural networks (DNNs) used for brain-computer interface (BCI) classification are commonly expected to learn general features when trained across a variety of contexts, such that these features could be fine-tuned to specific contexts. While some success is found in such an approach, we suggest that this interpretation is limited and an alternative would better leverage the newly (publicly) available massive electroencephalography (EEG) datasets. We consider how to adapt techniques and architectures used for language modeling (LM) that appear capable of ingesting awesome amounts of data toward the development of encephalography modeling with DNNs in the same vein. We specifically adapt an approach effectively used for automatic speech recognition, which similarly (to LMs) uses a self-supervised training objective to learn compressed representations of raw data signals. After adaptation to EEG, we find that a single pre-trained model is capable of modeling completely novel raw EEG sequences recorded with differing hardware, and different subjects performing different tasks. Furthermore, both the internal representations of this model and the entire architecture can be fine-tuned to a variety of downstream BCI and EEG classification tasks, outperforming prior work in more task-specific (sleep stage classification) self-supervision.

EEG microstate features according to performance on a mental arithmetic task.

Project description:In this study, we hypothesized that task performance could be evaluated applying EEG microstate to mental arithmetic task. This pilot study also aimed at evaluating the efficacy of microstates as novel features to discriminate task performance. Thirty-six subjects were divided into good and poor performers, depending on how well they performed the task. Microstate features were derived from EEG recordings during resting and task states. In the good performers, there was a decrease in type C and an increase in type D features during the task compared to the resting state. Mean duration and occurrence decreased and increased, respectively. In the poor performers, occurrence of type D feature, mean duration and occurrence showed greater changes. We investigated whether microstate features were suitable for task performance classification and eleven features including four archetypes were selected by recursive feature elimination (RFE). The model that implemented them showed the highest classification performance for differentiating between groups. Our pilot findings showed that the highest mean Area Under Curve (AUC) was 0.831. This study is the first to apply EEG microstate features to specific cognitive tasks in healthy subjects, suggesting that EEG microstate features can reflect task achievement.

An 18-subject EEG data collection using a visual-oddball task, designed for benchmarking algorithms and headset performance comparisons.

Project description:This data note describes an 18-subject EEG (electroencephalogram) data collection from an experiment in which subjects performed a standard visual oddball task. Several research projects have used this data to test artifact detection, classification, transfer learning, EEG preprocessing, blink detection, and automated annotation algorithms. We are releasing the data in three formats to enable benchmarking of EEG algorithms in many areas. The data was acquired using a Biosemi Active 2 EEG headset and includes 64 channels of EEG, 4 channels of EOG (electrooculogram), and 2 mastoid reference channels.

Task Transfer Learning for EEG Classification in Motor Imagery-Based BCI System.

Project description:The motor-imagery brain-computer interface system (MI-BCI) has a board prospect for development. However, long calibration time and lack of enough MI commands limit its use in practice. In order to enlarge the command set, we add the combinations of traditional MI commands as new commands into the command set. We also design an algorithm based on transfer learning so as to decrease the calibration time for collecting EEG signal and training model. We create feature extractor based on data from traditional commands and transfer patterns through the data from new commands. Through the comparison of the average accuracy between our algorithm and traditional algorithms and the visualization of spatial patterns in our algorithm, we find that the accuracy of our algorithm is much higher than traditional algorithms, especially as for the low-quality datasets. Besides, the visualization of spatial patterns is meaningful. The algorithm based on transfer learning takes the advantage of the information from source data. We enlarge the command set while shortening the calibration time, which is of significant importance to the MI-BCI application.

Predicting Cardiovascular Risk Using Social Media Data: Performance Evaluation of Machine-Learning Models.

Project description:BackgroundCurrent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) predictive models have limitations; thus, efforts are underway to improve the discriminatory power of ASCVD models.ObjectiveWe sought to evaluate the discriminatory power of social media posts to predict the 10-year risk for ASCVD as compared to that of pooled cohort risk equations (PCEs).MethodsWe consented patients receiving care in an urban academic emergency department to share access to their Facebook posts and electronic medical records (EMRs). We retrieved Facebook status updates up to 5 years prior to study enrollment for all consenting patients. We identified patients (N=181) without a prior history of coronary heart disease, an ASCVD score in their EMR, and more than 200 words in their Facebook posts. Using Facebook posts from these patients, we applied a machine-learning model to predict 10-year ASCVD risk scores. Using a machine-learning model and a psycholinguistic dictionary, Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, we evaluated if language from posts alone could predict differences in risk scores and the association of certain words with risk categories, respectively.ResultsThe machine-learning model predicted the 10-year ASCVD risk scores for the categories <5%, 5%-7.4%, 7.5%-9.9%, and ≥10% with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.78, 0.57, 0.72, and 0.61, respectively. The machine-learning model distinguished between low risk (<10%) and high risk (>10%) with an AUC of 0.69. Additionally, the machine-learning model predicted the ASCVD risk score with Pearson r=0.26. Using Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, patients with higher ASCVD scores were more likely to use words associated with sadness (r=0.32).ConclusionsLanguage used on social media can provide insights about an individual's ASCVD risk and inform approaches to risk modification.

Multi-task learning uncovers robust translation cis-regulatory features

Project description:To validate the sequence motifs identified by our multi-task learning model MTtrans, a new 5' UTR library with around 8,000 synthetic 5'UTRs was built to express EGFP. The reads count was used as a proxy of translation rate here to validate the estimated regulatory effect of motifs that we inferred from multiple datasets, proving the robustness of the sequence motifs.

A Single Bout of High-Intensity Cardiovascular Exercise Does Not Enhance Motor Performance and Learning of a Visuomotor Force Modulation Task, but Triggers Ipsilateral Task-Related EEG Activity.

Project description:Acute cardiovascular exercise (aCE) seems to be a promising strategy to improve motor performance and learning. However, results are heterogeneous, and the related neurophysiological mechanisms are not well understood. Oscillatory brain activitiy, such as task-related power (TRPow) in the alpha and beta frequencies, are known neural signatures of motor activity. Here, we tested the effects of aCE on motor performance and learning, along with corresponding modulations in EEG TRPow over the sensorimotor cortex. Forty-five right-handed participants (aged 18-34 years) practiced a visuomotor force-matching (FM) task after either high-intensity (HEG), low-intensity (LEG), or no exercise (control group, CG). Motor performance was assessed immediately, 15 min, 30 min, and 24 h after aCE/control. EEG was measured during the FM task. Results of frequentist and Bayesian statistics revealed that high- and low-intensity aCE had no effect at the behavioral level, adding to the previous mixed results. Interestingly, EEG analyses showed an effect of aCE on the ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex, with a stronger decrease in β-TRPow 15 min after exercise in both groups compared to the CG. Overall, aCE applied before motor practice increased ipsilateral sensorimotor activity, while motor learning was not affected; it remains to be seen whether aCE might affect motor learning in the long run.

Social Learning of a Spatial Task by Observation Alone.

Project description:Interactions between conspecifics are central to the acquisition of useful memories in the real world. Observational learning, i.e., learning a task by observing the success or failure of others, has been reported in many species, including rodents. However, previous work in rats with NMDA-receptor blockade has shown that even extensive observation of an unexplored space through a clear barrier is not sufficient to generate a stable hippocampal representation of that space. This raises the question of whether rats can learn a spatial task in a purely observed space from watching a conspecific, and if so, does this somehow stabilize their hippocampal representation? To address these questions, we designed an observational spatial task in a two-part environment that is nearly identical to that of the aforementioned electrophysiological study, in which an observer rat watches a demonstrator animal to learn the location of a hidden reward. Our results demonstrate that rats do not need to physically explore an environment to learn a reward location, provided a conspecific demonstrates where it is. We also show that the behavioral memory is not affected by NMDA receptor blockade, suggesting that the spatial representation underlying the behavior has been consolidated by observation alone.
