A Novel Fluorescent Test Papers Based on Carbon Dots for Selective and Sensitive Detection of Cr (VI).

ABSTRACT: In recent years, carbon dots (CDs) are promising fluorescence probes for ions detection. In this paper, the CDs which are with an average diameter of 5.5 nm were synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal carbonization of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) salt. The CDs have strong yellow photoluminescence (PL) with a maximum emission intensity at 550 nm under an excitation wavelength of 450 nm. As the electron transfer will occur between Cr (VI) and the CDs, yellow fluorescence was quenched after adding the Cr (VI) ions. The CDs probe allows the detection of Cr (VI) ions over a concentration range from 0 to 0.1 M (R ² = 0.987) and the lower detection limit is 10^-5 M. Simultaneously, the CDs show highly selectivity and stability toward the detection of Cr (VI) ions.

N,Zn-Doped Fluorescent Sensor Based on Carbon Dots for the Subnanomolar Detection of Soluble Cr(VI) Ions

Project description:The development of a fluorescent sensor has attracted much attention for the detection of various toxic pollutants in the environment. In this work, fluorescent carbon dots (N,Zn-CDs) doped with nitrogen and zinc were synthesized using citric acid monohydrate and 4-pyridinecarboxyaldehyde as carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The synthesized N,Zn-CDs served as an “off” fluorescence detector for the rapid and sensitive detection of hexavalent chromium ions (Cr(VI)). The zinc metal integrated into the heteroatomic fluorescent carbon dot played a functional role by creating a coordination site for the hydrogen ions that were displaced after the addition of Cr to the solution matrix. The stepwise addition of Cr(VI) effectively quenched the fluorescence intensity of the N,Zn-CDs, and this phenomenon was attributed to the internal filter effect. A low detection limit of 0.47 nmol/L for Cr(VI) was achieved in the fluorescence experiments. Real water samples were used to evaluate the practical application of N,Zn-CDs for the quantification of Cr(VI). The results show acceptable recoveries and agreement with ion chromatography-ultraviolet spectrometry results. These good recoveries indicate that the fluorescence probe is very well suited for environmental measurements.

Effective Adsorption and Sensitive Detection of Cr(VI) by Chitosan/Cellulose Nanocrystals Grafted with Carbon Dots Composite Hydrogel.

Project description:Due to its lethal effect on the human body and other creatures, Cr(VI) ions have attained widespread public attention, and an effective adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions is vital. Chitosan (CS)/cellulose nanocrystals grafted with carbon dots (CNCD) composite hydrogel with strong sorption ability and sensitive detection ability for Cr(VI) was formed. The cellulose nanocrystals (CN) offered a natural skeleton for assembling 3D porous structures, and then improved the sorption ability for Cr(VI); moreover, carbon dots (CD) acted as a fluorescent probe for Cr(VI) and provided Cr(VI) adsorption sites. With a maximum adsorption capacity of 217.8 mg/g, the CS/CNCD composite hydrogel exhibited efficient adsorption properties. Meanwhile, with a detection limit of 0.04 μg/L, this hydrogel was used for selective and quantitative detection of Cr(VI). The determination of Cr(VI) was based on the inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching. This hydrogel retained its effective adsorption ability even after four repeated regenerations. Furthermore, the economic feasibility of the CS/CNCD composite hydrogel over activated carbon was confirmed using cost analysis. This study provided one new method for producing low-cost adsorbents with effective sorption and sensitive detection for Cr(VI).

Efficient Reduction of Cr(VI) with Carbon Quantum Dots.

Project description:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution is a global problem, and the reduction of highly toxic Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) is considered to be an effective method to address Cr(VI) pollution. In this study, low-toxicity carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were used to reduce Cr(VI) in wastewater. The results show that CQDs can directly reduce Cr(VI) at pH 2 and can achieve a reduction efficiency of 94% within 120 min. It is observed that under pH higher than 2, CQDs can activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) for the reduction of Cr(VI) and the reduction efficiency can reach 99% within 120 min even under neutral conditions. The investigation of the mechanism shows that the hydroxyl groups on the surface of CQDs can be directly oxidized by Cr(VI) because of the higher redox potential of Cr(VI) at pH 2. As the pH increases, the carbonyl groups on the surface of CQDs can activate PMS to generate ROS, O2 •-, and 1O2, which result in Cr(VI) being reduced. To facilitate the practical application of CQDs, the treatment of Cr(VI) in real water samples by CQDs was simulated and the method reduced Cr(VI) from an initial concentration of 5 mg/L to only 8 μg/L in 150 min, which is below the California water quality standard of 10 μg/L. The study provides a new method for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater and a theoretical basis for practical application.

Carbon Dots Derived from the Maillard Reaction for pH Sensors and Cr (VI) Detection.

Project description:The Maillard reaction involves a series of complex reactions; fluorescent compounds have been considered as vital intermediate products of the reaction. In this article, carbon dots (CDs) based on the Maillard reaction (MR-CDs) were prepared with L-tryptophan and D-glucose, and they had excellent photoluminescence stability. MR-CDs showed stable pH-dependence behavior and exhibited an excellent linear response to pH in the range of 4.0-7.5 and 7.5-13.0, respectively. Under the masking effect of sodium fluoride for Fe(III), MR-CDs showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity for Cr (VI). The linear range of Cr(VI) was 0.2-50 μM and the limit of detection was 20 nM. (S/N ≥ 3). Furthermore, MR-CDs were used to detect Cr(VI) in tap water samples. The recoveries were between 95.8% and 98.94%, and RSDs were less than 3.17%.

Facile synthesis of carbon nitride quantum dots as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent sensor for the tetracycline detection.

Project description:Enhanced blue fluorescent carbon nitride quantum dots (g-C3N4QDs) were synthesized by a simple solvothermal "tailoring" process from bulk g-C3N4 and analyzed by various characterization methods. The as-obtained g-C3N4QDs were successfully applied in the determination of tetracycline (TC) with a good linear relationship in the range of 0.23-202.70 μM. The proposed fluorescent sensor shows excellent stability, good repeatability, high selectivity and outstanding sensitivity to TC with a low detection limit of 0.19 μM. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of g-C3N4QDs with TC was mainly governed by static quenching and the inner filter effect. The method was successfully applied to monitor TC in tap water and milk powder samples.

Facile synthesis of N-doped graphene quantum dots as a fluorescent sensor for Cr(vi) and folic acid detection.

Project description:The development of stable fluorescent sensors for toxic pollutants and drugs is meaningful to the environment and public health. In this work, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) were facially synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method using soluble starch and l-arginine as carbon and nitrogen sources in pure water at 190 °C for 4 h. The as-synthesized N-GQDs were well characterized and displayed blue fluorescence emission at 445 nm with excellent pH stability, salt tolerance, thermostability, photobleaching resistance and reproducibility. Moreover, N-GQDs could serve as an "on-off" sensor for selective detection of Cr(vi) and folic acid with low detection limit (0.80 and 2.1 μM), good linear correlation over wide linear range (0-50 μM and 0-200 μM) as well as short response time (<10 s). The practical applications of N-GQDs for Cr(vi) and folic acid detection in actual samples were further investigated and showed acceptable recoveries (92-105%) with relative standard deviations less than 5%. These results indicated that this N-GQDs-based sensor could be a potential alternative for Cr(vi) and folic acid detection in the fields of environmental monitoring and drug analysis.

Synthesis of Fluorescent Carbon Dots as Selective and Sensitive Probes for Cupric Ions and Cell Imaging.

Project description:A novel sensing system has been designed for the detection of cupric ions. It is based on the quenched fluorescence signal of carbon dots (CDs), which were carbonized from poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and L-Cysteine (CYS). Cupric ions interact with the nitrogen and sulfur atoms on surface of the CDs to form an absorbed complex; this results in strong quenching of the fluorescence of the CDs via a fast metal-to-ligand binding affinity. The synthesized water-soluble CDs also exhibited a quantum yield of 7.6%, with favorable photoluminescent properties and good photostability. The fluorescence intensity of the CDs was very stable in high ionic strength (up to 1.0 M NaCl) and over a wide range of pH levels (2.0-12.0). This facile method can therefore develop a sensor that offers reliable, fast, and selective detection of cupric ions with a detection limit down to 0.15 ?M and a linear range from 0.5 to 7.0 ?M (R2 = 0.980). The CDs were used for cell imaging, observed that they were low toxicity to Tramp C1 cells and exhibited blue and green and red fluorescence under a fluorescence microscope. In summary, the CDs exhibited excellent fluorescence properties, and could be applied to the selective and sensitive detection of cupric ion and multicolor cell imaging.

Ratiometric fluorescent test paper based on silicon nanocrystals and carbon dots for sensitive determination of mercuric ions.

Project description:Classical dye absorption-based pH test papers are widely used to measure the degree of acidity of media for quantification or semi-quantification by the observation of the naked eye on the variation of colour. However, it remains a challenging task to extend portable and cheap methods to a wide range of analytes for accurate quantification. Here, we report a dosage-sensitive test paper for the assay of mercury ions (Hg2+) with wide colour evolution. The ratiometric fluorescent probe was prepared by mixing blue-emission silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) and red-emission carbon dots (r-CDs). The Si NCs serve as the reaction site and the r-CDs as the internal reference. Upon the addition of Hg2+, the blue fluorescence of the Si NCs was quenched, while the red fluorescence of the r-CDs remained constant, resulting in the consecutive fluorescence colour changes from blue to orange red. The probe demonstrates high selectivity and sensitivity of the visualization assay of Hg2+ with a detection limit of 7.63 nM. Moreover, we printed the ratiometric fluorescence probe result onto a piece of filter paper to prepare a test paper, which represents an on-site, sensitive, rapid and cost-effective method for the visual determination of Hg2+ by the naked eye.

Basophilic green fluorescent carbon nanoparticles derived from benzoxazine for the detection of Cr(vi) in a strongly alkaline environment.

Project description:Fluorescent probes for heavy or transition metal ions in extreme environments are crucially important for practical use. In this work, basophilic green fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (G-CNPs) were synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal treatment of benzoxazine in NaOH aqueous solution. These G-CNPs showed favorable dispersibility in strongly alkaline conditions due to the abundant functional groups on their surface. Based on their good photoluminescence properties and excellent stability, the G-CNPs could be used to detect Cr(vi) in a strongly alkaline environment (pH = 14) through a fluorescence quenching effect. This detection process was achieved selectively among 17 anions within 30 seconds and the limitation was 0.58 μM (S/N = 3). It was revealed that the fluorescence turn-off process was caused by the inner filter effect (IFE) of Cr(vi). This study developed efficient fluorescence sensors based on fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, which could be used in strongly alkaline environments.

ZnO-Associated Carbon Dot-Based Fluorescent Assay for Sensitive and Selective Dopamine Detection.

Project description:This paper presents a simple and highly efficient method for dopamine detection using water-soluble carbon dot nanoparticles. The ZnO-associated carbon dots (CDZs) were synthesized using a green chemical strategy. An examination of the effects of biomolecules on the fluorescence of CDZs revealed selective dopamine-induced quenching. In a phosphate buffer (pH = 7.4) medium, a detection limit of 1.06 nM was obtained. This "turn off" phenomenon was attributed to the electronic interaction between CDZs and dopamine, during the oxidation of dopamine. At lower pH, however, the effects of dopamine on the fluorescence of CDZs were insignificant as the oxidation of dopamine was hindered when the proton concentration was increased. This method was found to be free from the interference of coexisting molecules, that is, ascorbic acid and uric acid. This sensing platform was applied successfully in biological fluids to confirm the practical significance of the as-designed sensor.
