Coelenterazine is a key substrate involved in marine bioluminescence which is used for light-production by at least nine phyla. Some luminous animals, such as the hydromedusa <i>Aequorea</i>, lack the ability to produce coelenterazine endogenously and instead depend on dietary sources.
