NHCs as Neutral Donors towards Polyphosphorus Complexes.

ABSTRACT: The first adducts of NHCs (=N-heterocyclic carbenes) with aromatic polyphosphorus complexes are reported. The reactions of [Cp*Fe(?⁵ -P₅ )] (1) (Cp*=pentamethyl-cyclopentadienyl) with IMe (=1,3,4,5-tetramethylimidazolin-2-ylidene), IMes (=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene) and IDipp (=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene) led to the corresponding neutral adducts which can be isolated in the solid state. However, in solution, they quickly undergo a dissociative equilibrium between the adduct and 1 including the corresponding NHC. The equilibrium is influenced by the bulkiness of the NHC. [Cp''Ta(CO)₂ (?⁴ -P₄ )] (Cp''=1,3-di-tert-butylcyclopentadienyl) reacts with IMe under P atom abstraction to give an unprecedented cyclo-P₃ -containing anionic tantalum complex. DFT calculations shed light onto the energetics of the reaction pathways.

Structure and reactivity in neutral organic electron donors derived from 4-dimethylaminopyridine.

Project description:The effects on the redox properties of modifying the molecular skeleton of neutral bis-2-(4-dimethylamino)pyridinylidene electron donors, derived from 4-dimethylaminopyridine (4-DMAP), have been explored, by varying two parameters: (i) the length of a polymethylene chain linking the two pyridine-derived rings and (ii) the nature of the nitrogen substituents on the 4 and 4' positions of the precursor pyridines. Restricting the bridge length to two methylene units significantly altered the redox profile, while changes in the nitrogen-substituents at the 4 and 4' positions led to only slight changes in the redox potentials.

Pushing the limits of neutral organic electron donors: a tetra(iminophosphorano)-substituted bispyridinylidene.

Project description:A new ground-state organic electron donor has been prepared that features four strongly ?-donating iminophosphorano substituents on a bispyridinylidene skeleton. Cyclic voltammetry reveals a record redox potential of -1.70?V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE) for the couple involving the neutral organic donor and its dication. This highly reducing organic compound can be isolated (44?%) or more conveniently generated in?situ by a deprotonation reaction involving its readily prepared pyridinium ion precursor. This donor is able to reduce a variety of aryl halides, and, owing to its redox potential, was found to be the first organic donor to be effective in the thermally induced reductive S?N bond cleavage of N,N-dialkylsulfonamides, and reductive hydrodecyanation of malonitriles.

Stable Actinide π Complexes of a Neutral 1,4-Diborabenzene.

Project description:The π coordination of arene and anionic heteroarene ligands is a ubiquitous bonding motif in the organometallic chemistry of d-block and f-block elements. By contrast, related π interactions of neutral heteroarenes including neutral bora-π-aromatics are less prevalent particularly for the f-block, due to less effective metal-to-ligand backbonding. In fact, π complexes with neutral heteroarene ligands are essentially unknown for the actinides. We have now overcome these limitations by exploiting the exceptionally strong π donor capabilities of a neutral 1,4-diborabenzene. A series of remarkably robust, π-coordinated thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) half-sandwich complexes were synthesized by simply combining the bora-π-aromatic with ThCl4 (dme)2 or UCl4 , representing the first examples of actinide complexes with a neutral boracycle as sandwich-type ligand. Experimental and computational studies showed that the strong actinide-heteroarene interactions are predominately electrostatic in nature with distinct ligand-to-metal π donation and without significant π/δ backbonding contributions.

Catalysis with chalcogen bonds: neutral benzodiselenazole scaffolds with high-precision selenium donors of variable strength.

Project description:The benzodiselenazoles (BDS) introduced in this report fulfill, for the first time, all the prerequisites for non-covalent high-precision chalcogen-bonding catalysis in the focal point of conformationally immobilized σ holes on strong selenium donors in a neutral scaffold. Rational bite-angle adjustment to the long Se-C bonds was the key for BDS design. For the unprecedented BDS motif, synthesis of 12 analogs from o-xylene, crystal structure, σ hole variation strategies, optoelectronic properties, theoretical and experimental anion binding as well as catalytic activity are reported. Chloride binding increases with the depth of the σ holes down to KD = 11 μM in THF. Catalytic activities follow the same trend and culminate in rate enhancements for transfer hydrogenation of quinolines beyond 100 000.

Lanthanide complexes as fluorescent indicators for neutral sugars and cancer biomarkers.

Project description:Simple water-soluble lanthanum and europium complexes are effective at detecting neutral sugars as well as glycolipids and phospholipids. In solutions at physiologically relevant pH the fluorescent lanthanum complex binds neutral sugars with apparent binding constants comparable to those of arylboronic acids. Interference from commonly occurring anions is minimal. The europium complex detects sialic acid-containing gangliosides at pH 7.0 over an asialoganglioside. This selectivity is attributed, in large part, to the cooperative complexation of the oligosaccharide and sialic acid residues to the metal center, based on analogous prior studies. In MeOH, lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a biomarker for several pathological conditions including ovarian cancer, is selectively detected by the europium complex. LPA is also detected via a fluorescence increase in human plasma samples. The 2-sn-OH moiety of LPA plays a key role in promoting binding to the metal center. Other molecules found in common brain ganglioside and phospholipid extracts do not interfere in the ganglioside or LPA fluorescence assays.

Formation of Hg(II) Tetrathiolate Complexes with Cysteine at Neutral pH.

Project description:Mercury(II) ions precipitate from aqueous cysteine (H2Cys) solutions containing H2Cys/Hg(II) mole ratio ≥ 2.0 as Hg(S-HCys)2. In absence of additional cysteine, the precipitate dissolves at pH ~12 with the [Hg(S,N-Cys)2]2- complex dominating. With excess cysteine (H2Cys/Hg(II) mole ratio ≥ 4.0), higher complexes form and the precipitate dissolves at lower pH values. Previously, we found that tetrathiolate [Hg(S-Cys)4]6- complexes form at pH = 11.0; in this work we extend the investigation to pH values of physiological interest. We examined two series of Hg(II)-cysteine solutions in which CHg(II) varied between 8 - 9 mM and 80 - 100 mM, respectively, with H2Cys/Hg(II) mole ratios from 4 to ~20. The solutions were prepared in the pH range 7.1 - 8.8, at the pH at which the initial Hg(S-HCys)2 precipitate dissolved. The variations in the Hg(II) speciation were followed by 199Hg NMR, X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopic techniques. Our results show that in the dilute solutions (CHg(II) = 8 - 9 mM), mixtures of di-, tri- (major) and tetrathiolate complexes exist at moderate cysteine excess (CH2Cys ~ 0.16 M) at pH 7.1. In the more concentrated solutions (CHg(II) = 80 - 100 mM) with high cysteine excess (CH2Cys > 0.9 M), tetrathiolate [Hg(S-cysteinate)4] m-6 (m = 0 - 4) complexes dominate in the pH range 7.3 - 7.8, with lower charge than for the [Hg(S-Cys)4]6- complex due to protonation of some (m) of the amino groups of the coordinated cysteine ligands. The results of this investigation could provide a key to the mechanism of biosorption and accumulation of Hg(II) ions in biological / environmental systems.

Neutral and Cationic Complexes of Silicon(IV) Halides with Phosphine Ligands.

Project description:The reaction of SiI4 and PMe3 in n-hexane produced the yellow salt, [SiI3(PMe3)2]I, confirmed from its X-ray structure, containing a trigonal bipyramidal cation with trans-phosphines. This contrasts with the six-coordination found in (the known) trans-[SiX4(PMe3)2] (X = Cl, Br) complexes. The diphosphines o-C6H4(PMe2)2 and Et2P(CH2)2PEt2 form six-coordinate cis-[SiI4(diphosphine)], which were also characterized by X-ray crystallography, multinuclear NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Reaction of trans-[SiX4(PMe3)2] (X = Cl, Br) with Na[BArF] (BArF = [B{3,5-(CF3)2C6H3}4]) produced five-coordinate [SiX3(PMe3)2][BArF], but while Me3SiO3SCF3 also abstracted chloride from trans-[SiCl4(PMe3)2], the reaction products were six-coordinate complexes [SiCl3(PMe3)2(OTf)] and [SiCl2(PMe3)2(OTf)2] with the triflate coordinated. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for [SiCl3(PMe3)2][BArF] and [SiCl2(PMe3)2(OTf)2]. The charge distribution across the silicon species was also examined by natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses of the computed density functional theory (DFT) wavefunctions. For the [SiX4(PMe3)2] and [SiX3(PMe3)2]+ complexes, the positive charge on Si decreases and the negative charge on X decreases going from X = F to X = I. Upon going from [SiX4(PMe3)2] to [SiX3(PMe3)2]+, i.e., removal of X-, there is an increase in positive charge on Si and a decrease in negative charge on the X centers (except for the case X = F). The positive charge on P shows a slight decrease.

Synthesis of Stable Gold(III) Pincer Complexes with Anionic Heteroatom Donors.

Project description:A series of gold(III) complexes supported by pyridine-based bis(amidate), bis(carboxylate), and bis(iminothiolate) substituents is reported. These compounds represent rare examples of pincer-ligated gold(III) centers with multiple anionic heteroaom donors. Reactivity and electrochemical studies demonstrate the stability of these compounds and the marked difference in reduction potentials with varying ligand scaffolds.

Charge Transfer Complexes of New Sulfur- and Selenium-Rich Aromatic Donors.

Project description:Two new sulfur- and selenium-rich pentacyclic aromatic compounds were prepared by short chemical syntheses. The two donors readily formed charge transfer (CT) complexes upon reaction with antimony pentachloride or tris(4-bromophenyl)ammoniumyl hexachloroantimonate. The X-ray structures of the heterocyclic donors and their CT complexes were determined. The donors flattened considerably upon CT complex formation.

Neutral "Cp-Free" Silyl-Lanthanide(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Structure, and Bonding Analysis.

Project description:Complexes featuring lanthanide silicon bonds represent a research area still in its infancy. Herein, we report a series of Cp-free lanthanide (+II) complexes bearing ?-bonded silyl ligands. By reactions of LnI2 (Ln = Yb, Eu, Sm) either with a 1,4-oligosilanyl dianion [K-Si(SiMe3)2SiMe2SiMe2Si(SiMe3)2-K)] (1) or with 2 (Me3Si)3SiK (3) the corresponding neutral metallacyclopentasilanes ({Me2Si(Me3Si)2Si}2)Ln·(THF)4 (Ln = Yb (2a), Eu (2b), Sm (2c)), or the disilylated complexes ({Me3Si}3Si)2Ln·(THF)3 (Ln = Yb (4a), Eu (4b), Sm (4c)), were selectively obtained. Complexes 2b, 2c, 4b, and 4c represent the first examples of structurally characterized Cp-free Eu and Sm complexes with silyl ligands. In both series, a linear correlation was observed between the Ln-Si bond lengths and the covalent radii of the corresponding lanthanide metals. Density functional theory calculations were also carried out for complexes 2a-c and 4a-c to elucidate the bonding situation between the Ln(+II) centers and Si.
