Mesoscopic theory of defect ordering-disordering transitions in thin oxide films.

ABSTRACT: Ordering of mobile defects in functional materials can give rise to fundamentally new phases possessing ferroic and multiferroic functionalities. Here we develop the Landau theory for strain induced ordering of defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies) in thin oxide films, considering both the ordering and wavelength of possible instabilities. Using derived analytical expressions for the energies of various defect-ordered states, we calculated and analyzed phase diagrams dependence on the film-substrate mismatch strain, concentration of defects, and Vegard coefficients. Obtained results open possibilities to create and control superstructures of ordered defects in thin oxide films by selecting the appropriate substrate and defect concentration.

Phase transitions via selective elemental vacancy engineering in complex oxide thin films.

Project description:Defect engineering has brought about a unique level of control for Si-based semiconductors, leading to the optimization of various opto-electronic properties and devices. With regard to perovskite transition metal oxides, O vacancies have been a key ingredient in defect engineering, as they play a central role in determining the crystal field and consequent electronic structure, leading to important electronic and magnetic phase transitions. Therefore, experimental approaches toward understanding the role of defects in complex oxides have been largely limited to controlling O vacancies. In this study, we report on the selective formation of different types of elemental vacancies and their individual roles in determining the atomic and electronic structures of perovskite SrTiO3 (STO) homoepitaxial thin films fabricated by pulsed laser epitaxy. Structural and electronic transitions have been achieved via selective control of the Sr and O vacancy concentrations, respectively, indicating a decoupling between the two phase transitions. In particular, O vacancies were responsible for metal-insulator transitions, but did not influence the Sr vacancy induced cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition in epitaxial STO thin film. The independent control of multiple phase transitions in complex oxides by exploiting selective vacancy engineering opens up an unprecedented opportunity toward understanding and customizing complex oxide thin films.

Defect-enriched iron fluoride-oxide nanoporous thin films bifunctional catalyst for water splitting.

Project description:Developing cost-effective electrocatalysts operated in the same electrolyte for water splitting, including oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions, is important for clean energy technology and devices. Defects in electrocatalysts strongly influence their chemical properties and electronic structures, and can dramatically improve electrocatalytic performance. However, the development of defect-activated electrocatalyst with an efficient and stable water electrolysis activity in alkaline medium remains a challenge, and the understanding of catalytic origin is still limited. Here, we highlight defect-enriched bifunctional eletrocatalyst, namely, three-dimensional iron fluoride-oxide nanoporous films, fabricated by anodization/fluorination process. The heterogeneous films with high electrical conductivity possess embedded disorder phases in crystalline lattices, and contain numerous scattered defects, including interphase boundaries, stacking faults, oxygen vacancies, and dislocations on the surfaces/interface. The heterocatalysts efficiently catalyze water splitting in basic electrolyte with remarkable stability. Experimental studies and first-principle calculations suggest that the surface/edge defects contribute significantly to their high performance.

Dynamic phase transitions in freestanding polymer thin films.

Project description:After more than two decades of study, many fundamental questions remain unanswered about the dynamics of glass-forming materials confined to thin films. Experiments and simulations indicate that free interfaces enhance dynamics over length scales larger than molecular sizes, and this effect strengthens at lower temperatures. The nature of the influence of interfaces, however, remains a point of significant debate. In this work, we explore the properties of the nonequilibrium phase transition in dynamics that occurs in trajectory space between high- and low-mobility basins in a set of model polymer freestanding films. In thick films, the film-averaged mobility transition is broader than the bulk mobility transition, while in thin films it is a variant of the bulk result shifted toward a higher bias. Plotting this transition's local coexistence points against the distance from the films' surface shows thick films have surface and film-center transitions, while thin films practically have a single transition throughout the film. These observations are reminiscent of thermodynamic capillary condensation of a vapor-liquid phase between parallel plates, suggesting they constitute a demonstration of such an effect in a trajectory phase transition in the dynamics of a structural glass former. Moreover, this transition bears similarities to several experiments exhibiting anomalous behavior in the glass transition upon reducing film thickness below a material-dependent onset, including the broadening of the glass transition and the homogenization of surface and bulk glass transition temperatures.

Li-Assisted Low-Temperature Phase Transitions in Solution-Processed Indium Oxide Films for High-Performance Thin Film Transistor.

Project description:Lithium (Li)-assisted indium oxide (In2O3) thin films with ordered structures were prepared on solution-processed zirconium oxide (ZrO2) gate dielectrics by spin-casting and thermally annealing hydrated indium nitrate solutions with different Li nitrate loadings. It was found that the Li-assisted In precursor films on ZrO2 dielectrics could form crystalline structures even at processing temperatures (T) below 200?°C. Different In oxidation states were observed in the Li-doped films, and the development of such states was significantly affected by both temperature and the mol% of Li cations, [Li(+)]/([In(3+)]?+?[Li(+)]), in the precursor solutions. Upon annealing the Li-assisted precursor films below 200?°C, metastable indium hydroxide and/or indium oxyhydroxide phases were formed. These phases were subsequently transformed into crystalline In2O3 nanostructures after thermal dehydration and oxidation. Finally, an In2O3 film doped with 13.5?mol% Li(+) and annealed at 250?°C for 1?h exhibited the highest electron mobility of 60?cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) and an on/off current ratio above 10(8) when utilized in a thin film transistor.

Growth of Epitaxial Oxide Thin Films on Graphene.

Project description:The transfer process of graphene onto the surface of oxide substrates is well known. However, for many devices, we require high quality oxide thin films on the surface of graphene. This step is not understood. It is not clear why the oxide should adopt the epitaxy of the underlying oxide layer when it is deposited on graphene where there is no lattice match. To date there has been no explanation or suggestion of mechanisms which clarify this step. Here we show a mechanism, supported by first principles simulation and structural characterisation results, for the growth of oxide thin films on graphene. We describe the growth of epitaxial SrTiO3 (STO) thin films on a graphene and show that local defects in the graphene layer (e.g. grain boundaries) act as bridge-pillar spots that enable the epitaxial growth of STO thin films on the surface of the graphene layer. This study, and in particular the suggestion of a mechanism for epitaxial growth of oxides on graphene, offers new directions to exploit the development of oxide/graphene multilayer structures and devices.

Ordered fragmentation of oxide thin films at submicron scale.

Project description:Crack formation is typically undesirable as it represents mechanical failure that compromises strength and integrity. Recently, there have also been numerous attempts to control crack formation in materials with the aim to prevent or isolate crack propagation. In this work, we utilize fragmentation, at submicron and nanometre scales, to create ordered metal oxide film coatings. We introduce a simple method to create modified films using electroplating on a prepatterned substrate. The modified films undergo preferential fragmentation at locations defined by the initial structures on the substrate, yielding ordered structures. In thicker films, some randomness in the characteristic sizes of the fragments is introduced due to competition between crack propagation and crack creation. The method presented allows patterning of metal oxide films over relatively large areas by controlling the fragmentation process. We demonstrate use of the method to fabricate high-performance electrochromic structures, yielding good coloration contrast and high coloration efficiency.

Intercalation of Dyes in Graphene Oxide Thin Films and Membranes.

Project description:Intercalation of dyes into thin multilayered graphene oxide (GO) films was studied by neutron reflectivity and X-ray diffraction. Methylene blue (MB) penetrates the interlayer space of GO in ethanol solution and remains intercalated after the solvent evaporation, as revealed by the expansion of the interlayer lattice and change in chemical composition. The sorption of MB by thin GO films is found to be significantly stronger compared to the sorption of Crystal violet (CV) and Rose bengal (RB). This effect is attributed to the difference in the geometrical shape of planar MB and essentially nonflat CV and RB molecules. Graphite oxides and restacked GO films are found to exhibit different methylene blue (MB) sorptions. MB sorption by precursor graphite oxide and thin spin-coated films of GO is significantly stronger compared to freestanding micrometer-thick membranes prepared by vacuum filtration. Nevertheless, the sorption capacity of GO membranes is sufficient to remove a significant part of the MB from diluted solutions tested for permeation in several earlier studies. High sorption capacity results in strong modification of the GO structure, which is likely to affect permeation properties of GO membranes. Therefore, MB is not suitable for testing size exclusion effects in the permeation of GO membranes. It is not only hydration or solvation diameter but also the exact geometrical shape of molecules that needs to be taken into account considering size effects for penetration of molecules between GO layers in membrane applications.

Physicochemical characterisation of reduced graphene oxide for conductive thin films.

Project description:Graphene is a desirable material for next generation technology. However, producing high yields of single-layer flakes with industrially applicable methods is currently limited. We introduce a combined process for the reduction of graphene oxide (GO) via vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and thermal annealing at temperatures of <150 °C for times of <10 minutes, resulting in electrically conducting thin films with sheet resistances reducing by 8 orders of magnitude to as low as ∼1.3 kΩ □-1, suitable for microelectronics, display technology and optoelectronic applications. The in-depth physicochemical characterisation of the products at different stages of GO preparation and reduction allows for further understanding of the process and demonstrates the suitability for industrial production methodologies due to an environmentally-friendly reducing agent, solution processability and no requirement for high temperatures. The presence of the vitamin C lowers the temperature required to thermally reduce the GO into an electrically conducting thin film, making the technique suitable for thermally sensitive substrates, such as low melting point polymers. Simultaneous spray coating and reduction of GO allows for large area deposition of conductive coatings without sacrificing solution processability, often lost through particle agglomeration, making it compatible with industrial processes, and applicable to, for example, the production of sensors, energy devices and flexible conductive electrodes for touchscreens.

High-temperature optical properties of indium tin oxide thin-films.

Project description:Indium tin oxide (ITO) is one of the most widely used transparent conductors in optoelectronic device applications. We investigated the optical properties of ITO thin films at high temperatures up to 800 °C using spectroscopic ellipsometry. As temperature increases, amorphous ITO thin films undergo a phase transition at ~ 200 °C and develop polycrystalline phases with increased optical gap energies. The optical gap energies of both polycrystalline and epitaxial ITO thin films decrease with increasing temperature due to electron-phonon interactions. Depending on the background oxygen partial pressure, however, we observed that the optical gap energies exhibit reversible changes, implying that the oxidation and reduction processes occur vigorously due to the low oxidation and reduction potential energies of the ITO thin films at high temperatures. This result suggests that the electronic structure of ITO thin films strongly depends on temperature and oxygen partial pressure while they remain optically transparent, i.e., optical gap energies > 3.6 eV.
