Korean version of the convalescence and recovery evaluation: translation and linguistic validation

ABSTRACT:

Background

To develop a Korean version of the original English version of the convalescence and recovery evaluation (CARE) questionnaire. The linguistic validation of the CARE questionnaire was tested on Korean patients who underwent abdominal and pelvic surgery.

Methods

The CARE questionnaire was translated and validated linguistically in the following steps. Permission to translate the Korean version of the original version, forward translation into the Korean, reconciliation, backward translation into English, cognitive debriefing through patient interviews, and finally proofreading.

Results

The forward translation was carried out by two independent bilingual translators with non-medical backgrounds. In the translation step to Korean, the terms “bloated and gassy” and “trouble concentrating” were adjusted to make them easier to understand. Backward translation was performed by another translator who was not included in the forward translation. At the backward-translation stage, the Korean version was accepted without any objection, almost matching the original version except for a few words. Cognitive debriefing by means of patient interviews was performed with 10 patients admitted to the department of urology for renal, bladder, and prostate cancer for cancer treatment. There was no difficulty in understanding the content of the questionnaire. Because most of the terms were clear and understandable, no further changes were made in the panel discussion.

Conclusions

The Korean version of the CARE questionnaire has been verified and is ready for use. Additional testing steps are required for the psychometric performance of the Korean version of CARE.

Translation and Linguistic Validation of the Korean Version of the Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life Questionnaire.

Project description:PURPOSE:Although cure rate and efficacy of treatment for urinary stone disease have been improved, clinicians have been indifferent to the quality of life (QoL) of stone patients in Korea. The objective of this study was to develop a Korean version of Wisconsin questionnaire about quality of life questionnaire (K-WISQOL) of stone patients for use in Korea. METHODS:Linguistic validation was permitted for translation by its developers. Three bilingual nonspecialists and 11 panels who were actively involved in treating urinary stone patients performed the translation and linguistic validations. A trained interviewer and 5 Korean patients carried out cognitive debriefing. RESULTS:Noun words such as "energy" and "responsibilities" were very difficult to translate to Korean. They were substituted by more comprehensive words. After backward translation, translated sentences showed a good agreement with the original WISQOL. During backward translation and the second reconciliation, previously translated Korean version was revised in 5 sentences. In the cognitive debriefing process, all 5 patients thought that these questions explained the patient's situation well. Most of these respondents answered that explanatory notes of questionnaire were well written and the format of the questionnaire was easy to follow. CONCLUSION:The present study demonstrated that, despite language differences, translation and linguistic validation of the KWISQOL were successfully performed. This K-WISQOL could be useful tools for treatment plan and patient care.

Translation and linguistic validation of Korean version of short form of pelvic floor distress inventory-20, pelvic floor impact questionnaire-7.

Project description:The short forms of pelvic floor distress inventory (PFDI) and pelvic floor impact questionnaire (PFIQ) are useful disease specific questionnaires evaluating symptoms, quality of life for pelvic floor disorders. The purpose is to develop linguistic validation of the PFDI-20 and PFIQ-7 questionnaires. Three types of Korean version of questionnaires have been used in four locations of University Hospitals in Korea. Each version of questionnaires was developed by forward translation and back-translation by bilingual translators and was verified by the patients with pelvic floor disorder and healthy persons. For harmonization of 3 types of questionnaires, four authors reviewed, discussed all discrepancies, incorporated and produced a new version. The multi-step processes of translation and linguistic validation of the Korean version of PFDI-20 and PFIQ-7 questionnaire were completed. Further process of validation of Korean version of these questionnaires is required.

Translation, cultural adaptation and linguistic validation of the pectus excavatum evaluation questionnaire.

Project description:BackgroundPectus excavatum often imposes significant burden on the patients' quality of life. However, despite the known biopsychosocial effects, the deformity remains underappreciated. Patient reported outcome measures can be used to measure and appreciate results from a patient's perspective. The pectus excavatum evaluation questionnaire (PEEQ) is the most employed disease specific instrument to measure patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). A translation and linguistic validation of this questionnaire is presented for its use in the Dutch pediatric pectus excavatum population. By providing an insight in our translation process, we want to encourage other researchers to perform translations to other languages to make the questionnaire available to clinicians and researchers worldwide.MethodsThe 22-item PEEQ was translated and adapted according to the leading guidelines for the translation of patient reported outcome measures. Conceptual equivalence and cultural adaptation were emphasized.ResultsOne forward translation was produced through reconciliation of two forward translations. Back translation resulted in 15 identical items, as well as 6 literal, and 1 conceptual discrepancy. The latter was expected as during the forward translation a more culturally appropriate translation was chosen. Ten patients were involved during the cognitive debriefing process, following which one item was revised and the final Dutch version was established.ConclusionsWe provide a culturally appropriate and linguistically validated Dutch version of the PEEQ.

Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System: Translation and Linguistic Validation of Six Profile Domains for Korean Adults.

Project description:BackgroundThe purpose of the study was to translate and linguistically validate a Korean language version of the PROMIS (K-PROMIS) for the six profile adult domains: Fatigue, Pain Intensity, Pain Interference, Physical Function, Sleep Disturbance, and Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities.MethodsA total of 268 items were translated into Korean according to the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy multilingual translation methodology. Participants first completed approximately 27 to 35 items and were then interviewed to evaluate the conceptual equivalence of the translation to the original English language source. The K-PROMIS items that met the a priori threshold of ≥ 20% of respondents with comprehension difficulties in the cognitive interview.Results54 of the 268 items were identified as difficult items to comprehend for at least 20% of respondents in Round 1. The most frequently identified K-PROMIS domain on difficult items to comprehend was the Physical function (24.5%). Most items with linguistic difficulties were Fatigue and Physical function. Cultural difficulties were only included the Physical function and Ability to Participate in Social Roles and Activities domains. 25 of 54 items were slightly revised, and then these revised items were tested with additional six participants in Round 2, and most participants had no problems to understand modified items.ConclusionThe six profile adult domains of K-PROMIS have been linguistically validated. Further psychometric validation of the K-PROMIS items will provide additional information of meaningful outcomes for chronic disease and clinical setting.

Translation and Validation of the Korean Version of the Revised Health Care System Distrust Scale (HCSD-K) in Korean American Women.

Project description:BackgroundTrust in the healthcare system is a major contributor for racial disparities in health and health care. We aimed to formally translate and cross-culturally adapt the Korean version of the Revised Health Care System Distrust (HCSD-K) scale with a sample of Korean American women and examine the psychometric properties of the HCSD-K scale.MethodsTen Korean American women participated in the cognitive interview. A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 196 Korean American women aged 50⁻74 years. Instrument adaptation was performed using committee-based translation and cognitive interviewing. Construct validity, convergent validity, and internal consistency were examined to evaluate the psychometric properties of the HCSD-K scale.ResultsThe translated instrument was found to be semantically sound. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure with an excellent fit. Convergent validity was supported by correlations between the HCSD-K scale and both the Perceived Discrimination in Health Care and Trust in Physician scales. Cronbach's alpha for the total HCSD-K was 0.83.ConclusionThe nine-item HCSD-K scale demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity. It is an appropriate instrument for measuring healthcare system distrust in Korean American women. Further study is needed to confirm the study results in a gender-mixed Korean population.

Swedish translation and linguistic validation of the multidimensional dyspnoea profile.

Project description:BackgroundDyspnoea, the feeling of breathing discomfort, consists of multiple dimensions that can vary in intensity, including the level of unpleasantness, qualities or descriptors of the sensation, emotional responses, and impact on function. No validated instrument for multidimensional measurement of dyspnoea is available in Swedish. The Multidimensional Dyspnea Profile (MDP) was recently developed to measure the unpleasantness, sensory qualities, and emotional responses of dyspnoea across diseases and settings. We aimed to take forward a Swedish version of the MDP.MethodsTranslation and linguistic validation of the MDP was conducted in collaboration with a specialised company in the field (Mapi, Lyon, France). The structured process involved forward and backward translations by two independent certified translators, input from an in-country linguistic consultant, the developers, and three respiratory physicians. Understandability and acceptability were evaluated through in-depth interviews with five patients with dyspnoea in accordance with international guidelines.Results and conclusionA Swedish version of the MDP was obtained and linguistically validated. The MDP includes 11 rated items: the immediate unpleasantness of the sensation, the presence and intensity of five sensory qualities, and the intensity of five emotional responses to dyspnoea. The time period of measurement is specified by the user. The MDP is copyrighted by the developers but can be used free of charge in the context of non-funded academic research.ConclusionThe MDP is the first instrument for measuring multiple dimensions of dyspnoea available in Swedish and should be validated across diseases and settings. Multidimensional measurement is essential for improved assessment and management of dyspnoea in research and clinical care.

Linguistic validation of a widely used recovery score: quality of recovery-15 (QoR-15).

Project description:BackgroundThe quality of recovery-15 (QoR-15) is a patient reported outcome questionnaire that measures the quality of recovery after surgery and anesthesia. The QoR-15 has been validated in many languages; Turkish version of the QoR-15 has not yet been established. The aims of this study were to translate the QoR-15 questionnaire into Turkish and to perform a full psychometric evaluation of the Turkish version.MethodsAfter translating the original English version of the QoR-15 scale into Turkish, the QoR-15T scale was psychometrically validated. This process included validity, reliability, responsiveness, feasibility. The QoR-15T was evaluated before the surgery and 24 h after surgery.ResultsA total of 210 patients completed the pre- and postoperative questionnaires, providing a completion rate of 93.75%. The correlation coefficient between QoR-15T score and VAS score was 0.644 on postoperative day 1 (p < 0.001). Inter item Cronbach's alpha was 0.863. Global test-retest concordance coefficient was 0.98 (95% CI: 0.94-1.00).DiscussionThe QoR-15T scale is a reliable and valid instrument for evaluating postoperative quality of recovery in Turkish speaking patients. The psychometric characteristics used to assess postoperative quality of recovery were similar to those in the English version.

Validation of the Arabic linguistic version of the Overactive Bladder Symptoms Score questionnaire.

Project description:Objective: To validate an Arabic version of the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS) questionnaire. Patients and methods: In all, 301 patients were evaluated using the Arabic-translated OABSS. They were divided into four groups: 112 patients with OAB symptoms, 115 healthy individuals with no OAB symptoms, 38 with bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) associated with storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and 36 with BOO without storage LUTS. The reliability of the Arabic version was evaluated for internal consistency using Cronbach's ? test. Interdomain associations were examined using Spearman's correlation coefficient (r). The discrimination validity was evaluated using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: Higher internal consistency was found for all OABSS domains in the OAB and BOO groups. There were strong correlations between all domains in the OAB group (P < 0.001). Similarly, there were strong correlations between all domains in the BOO group. For discrimination validity, scores were statistically significant higher for all OABSS domains and overall total scores in the OAB and BOO groups compared with their control groups (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The Arabic version of OABSS is a reliable and valid instrument that can be used to evaluate symptoms and health-related quality of life in Arabic patients with OAB. Clinical trial no. Dyspnoea-12: a translation and linguistic validation study in a Swedish setting.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Dyspnoea consists of multiple dimensions including the intensity, unpleasantness, sensory qualities and emotional responses which may differ between patient groups, settings and in relation to treatment. The Dyspnoea-12 is a validated and convenient instrument for multidimensional measurement in English. We aimed to take forward a Swedish version of the Dyspnoea-12. METHODS:The linguistic validation of the Dyspnoea-12 was performed (Mapi Language Services, Lyon, France). The standardised procedure involved forward and backward translations by three independent certified translators and revisions after feedback from an in-country linguistic consultant, the developerand three native physicians. The understanding and convenience of the translated version was evaluated using qualitative in-depth interviews with five patients with dyspnoea. RESULTS:A Swedish version of the Dyspnoea-12 was elaborated and evaluated carefully according to international guidelines. The Swedish version, 'Dyspné-12', has the same layout as the original version, including 12 items distributed on seven physical and five affective items. The Dyspnoea-12 is copyrighted by the developer but can be used free of charge after permission for not industry-funded research. CONCLUSION:A Swedish version of the Dyspnoea-12 is now available for clinical validation and multidimensional measurement across diseases and settings with the aim of improved evaluation and management of dyspnoea.
