Project description:IntroductionEuropean societies are rapidly becoming multicultural. Cultural diversity presents new challenges and opportunities to communities that receive immigrants and migrants, and highlights the need for culturally safe healthcare. Universities share a responsibility to build a fair and equitable society by integrating cultural content in the nursing curricula. This paper aims to analyze European student nurses´ experience of learning cultural competence and of working with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.Materials and methodsA phenomenological approach was selected through a qualitative research method. 7 semi-structured focus groups with 5-7 students took place at the participants' respective universities in Spain, Belgium, Turkey and Portugal.Results5 themes and 16 subthemes emerged from thematic analysis. Theme 1, concept of culture/cultural diversity, describes the participants' concept of culture; ethnocentricity emerged as a frequent element in the students' discourse. Theme 2, personal awareness, integrates the students' self-perception of cultural competence and their learning needs. Theme 3, impact of culture, delves on the participants' perceived impact of cultural on both nursing care and patient outcomes. Theme 4, learning cultural competence, integrates the participants' learning experiences as part of their nursing curricula, as part of other academic learning opportunities and as part of extra-academic activities. Theme 5, learning cultural competence during practice placements, addresses some important issues including witnessing unequal care, racism, prejudice and conflict, communication and language barriers, tools and resources and positive attitudes and behaviors witnesses or displayed during clinical practice.ConclusionThe participants' perceived level of cultural competence was variable. All the participants agreed that transcultural nursing content should be integrated in the nursing curricula, and suggested different strategies to improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes. It is important to listen to the students and take their opinion into account when designing cultural teaching and learning activities.

Project description:Objectives:To investigate the experience of newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNs) in Singapore following their initial 6-12 months of transition from nursing student to registered nurse. Methods:This mixed-methods study consisted of two phases. In the first phase, data were collected via the administration of the online survey to 30 NGRNs. The questionnaire contained 42 items of the four-point Likert scale survey. In the second phase, a focus group interview was conducted with 5 NGRNs to gather complementary information regarding the major findings from the first phase. Results:The survey revealed despite most NGRNs (80%) in this study expressed overall satisfied with their transition, the item score was (2.97±0.61) out of 4, the majority (83.3%) also perceived their transition to professional practice being stressful, the item score was (3.07±0.74) out of 4.Three themes emerged from the interview, 'personal transition experience', 'professional transition experience', and 'organizational transition experience', which are entwined to construct overall NGRNs' transition experiences. Conclusions:This study reaffirms the theory-practice gap phenomenon. This signifies the need for closer collaboration between educational, healthcare industry and regulatory stakeholders to examine and address factors that influence their transition experience to better support them for workforce readiness.

Project description:IntroductionUtilizing simulation in nursing education is increasingly becoming a popular teaching pedagogy. Simulation provides opportunity to the nursing students to practice the clinical skills through various real life like situational experiences. Simulation improves the clinical decision making skills of the nursing students.ObjectiveA descriptive, cross sectional, correlational study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of simulation using NLN/Jeffries Nursing Education Simulation Framework on satisfaction and self-confidence of Undergraduate nursing students.Methods370 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study. Educational practices, Simulation design, Student satisfaction and Self-confidence questionnaires were used.ResultsMajority of the nursing students perceived agreement on various domains of student satisfaction, self-confidence, educational practices and simulation design used in the curriculum. The students were self-confident to care for similar patients in the clinical area and satisfied with this instructional method. Satisfaction and self-confidence were correlated with educational practices and simulation design.ConclusionDeveloping simulations using NLN/Jeffries Nursing Education Simulation framework will provide meaningful, engaging, and pedagogically sound experiences for the students. Pre-briefing and de-briefing are meaningful strategies to enhance the learning of students.

Project description:Background:Veterinary regulators require veterinary nursing students to demonstrate clinical competence prior to registration and practice as a veterinary nurse. However, in common with other medical professions, there is no one broadly accepted definition of competence. Studies in nursing have revealed that practicing nurses may view newly qualified colleagues as lacking competence, leading to disillusionment with nursing training programmes. Similar studies are lacking in veterinary nursing, despite the profession having recently undergone a similar transition from workplace-based training to undergraduate education. Methods:A mixed methods explanatory study surveyed 66 Irish registered veterinary nurses and 31 first year veterinary nursing students at two Irish third level institutions to obtain their views on what constitutes veterinary nursing competence and when veterinary nurses develop it. The surveys were followed by student focus groups and semi-structured one-on-one interviews with registered veterinary nurses. Content analysis was employed to analyse the surveys, while the focus groups and interview transcripts underwent thematic analysis. Results:Students perceived competence primarily as the ability to provide patient care, and they expected it to develop close to the time of graduation. RVNs held a broader definition of competence, incorporating leadership skills and confidence as well as patient care provision. RVNs expected it to take approximately two years of workplace-based experience post-graduation for a veterinary nurse to develop competence. In addition, RVNs recognised that anxiety felt by many newly qualified veterinary nurses during this period could be attenuated by mentorship from more experienced colleagues. Conclusions:Irish RVNs and veterinary nursing students perceive competence differently, similar to previous findings from the nursing profession. Educators and regulators should provide explicit descriptions of terms such as 'competence' to avoid confusion and possible disillusionment amongst veterinary nursing stakeholders.

Project description:AimThe study aimed to describe and explain the self-assessed gerontological nursing competence levels of Finnish nursing students and factors relating to it.DesignA cross-sectional study design, reported by The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology guidelines.MethodsData were collected with the GeroNursingCom instrument, which features 53 items relating to 11 competence factors. The K-clustering technique and the Chi-squared, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney tests were used to analyse the data.ResultsSeven hundred and ninety-nine nursing students from nine randomly selected higher education institutions were invited to participate in 2019. Three distinct student profiles were identified according to the data (N = 274): Profile A-lower intermediate competence (23.1% of students), Profile B-intermediate competence (45.8%) and Profile C-high competence (31.1%). The strongest competence area for all students was appreciative encounter and interaction, and the weakest was supporting the older person's sexuality. Nursing students have diverse backgrounds and their overall competence in gerontological nursing is shaped in part by their previous education, motivations and work experience.Relevance to clinical practiceRecognizing students' different gerontological nursing competence profiles enables the implementation of targeted education to improve competence in clinical practice.

Project description:UnlabelledAimsTo describe a funded proposal for the development of an on-line evidence based educational program for the management of deteriorating patients.BackgroundThere are international concerns regarding the management of deteriorating patients with issues around the 'failure to rescue'. The primary response to these issues has been the development of medical emergency teams with little focus on the education of primary first responders.Design/methodsA mixed methods triangulated convergent design.In this four phase proposal we plan to 1. examine nursing student team ability to manage deteriorating patients and based upon these findings 2. develop web based educational material, including interactive scenarios. This educational material will be tested and refined in the third Phase 3, prior to evaluation and dissemination in the final phase.ConclusionThis project aims to enhance knowledge development for the management of deteriorating patients through rigorous assessment of team performance and to produce a contemporary evidence-based online training program.

Project description:Simulation training has become an integral component of nursing education, offering students opportunities to develop and refine their clinical skills in a controlled and safe environment. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical skill competence and professional behaviors of undergraduate nursing students following simulation training. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed for this study. The study was conducted in the simulation center at the University of Tabuk using the Clinical Competency Questionnaire (CCQ), with data collected between January 1, 2023 and February 28, 2023. Participants were enrolled using a convenience sampling method, including nursing students in the 3rd and 4th years who trained in the simulation center and agreed to participate. The study results indicate that a majority of students demonstrated strong theoretical knowledge and practical competence in performing sterile techniques and administering oral medications with minimal or no supervision, with percentages of 74.7% and 73.3%, respectively. A significant proportion of students reported uncertainty or lack of skill in performing shift reports using SBAR (38.4%) and assessing gastrostomy tube placement (32.9%). Students exhibited satisfactory knowledge and competence in maintaining appropriate appearance, attire, and conduct (71.2%), understanding, and supporting group goals (71.2%), and comprehending patients' rights (69.9%). The findings suggest that nursing students attain a relatively high level of clinical competence and self-confidence after simulation training. This study recommends incorporating simulation training in nursing education, which enhances professional behaviors like appearance, group goals, and patient rights, but requires improvement in constructive criticism, problem prevention, and cultural competence.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Pediatrics residents perform a limited number of some procedures in the clinical setting and may benefit from procedure simulation workshops. OBJECTIVE: To examine (1) the number and types of procedures performed by pediatrics residents in the clinical setting, (2) the relationship between the number of procedures performed and self-reported procedural confidence and competence, and (3) the effect of a procedure simulation workshop on self-reported procedural confidence and competence. METHODS: Pediatrics residents at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford attended a half-day procedure workshop, rotating between 6 procedure simulation stations: vascular access, airway management, bladder catheterization, chest tube placement, lumbar puncture, and umbilical lines. Residents completed a survey immediately before and after the workshop to self-assess procedural confidence and competence. RESULTS: Seventy-two residents participated in a procedure workshop. The average number of procedures performed increased significantly from intern to junior to senior year. A positive correlation was found between number of procedures performed and preworkshop confidence (P < .001, R (2) = 0.86) and competence (P < .001, R (2) = 0.88). For each procedure assessed, completion of the procedure simulation workshop resulted in a statistically significant (P < .001) increase in self-perceived confidence (14%-131%; average, 48%) and competence (12%-119%; average, 50%). Statistically significant (P < .05) increases remained when results for interns, juniors, and seniors were examined separately. CONCLUSION: Procedure simulation workshops improve resident self-reported procedural confidence and competence, particularly for procedures that are least performed.

Project description:BackgroundCultural competence has become increasingly important for Chinese health professionals because of internationalization and the opening up of China to overseas visitors and business as well as a growing awareness of the needs of minority groups within China. This study aimed to evaluate a workshop designed to improve cultural competence among Chinese undergraduate nursing students.MethodsA one-group pretest and posttest design was applied. The intervention was a one-day workshop based on transformative learning theory using a variety of teaching strategies. Forty undergraduate nursing students from a university in Wuhan, China selected by convenient sampling received the intervention. Data were collected before the intervention (T1), immediately after the intervention (T2), and 1 month (T3) and 3 months (T4) following the intervention through the Chinese version of Cultural Competence Inventory for Nurses (CCIN). A researcher-designed evaluation form including open-ended questions was also used.ResultsParticipants' scores by CCIN increased significantly in the total score (p < .001) as well as the components of cultural awareness (p = .003), cultural knowledge (p < .001), cultural understanding (p = .007) and cultural skills (p < .001), but not in cultural respect. This improvement maintained at T3 and T4. Overall, participants were satisfied with the workshop, and the qualitative results supported the effects of this intervention.ConclusionsThe one-day workshop was effective in improving nursing students' cultural competence. Replication or further refinement of this workshop is recommended for future research among additional nursing students with diverse backgrounds.

Project description:PurposeSimulation teaching refers to the replication of real-life scenarios, enabling students to practice nursing skills and learn actively in a safe environment. It also helps students control their anxiety and fears when caring for real patients. This study investigated the relationships of Vietnamese nursing students’ self-confidence in clinical practice with their satisfaction and self-confidence in simulation-based practice.MethodsThis cross-sectional descriptive study included 182 nursing students. The data collection included 2 separate stages with 2 main questionnaires. The Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Scale was used to measure students’ satisfaction and self-confidence after learning in the simulation room. The Confidence Scale was used to measure students’ self-confidence when first performing techniques on actual patients. Data were analyzed by descriptive and Pearson correlation statistics.ResultsStudents’ satisfaction and self-confidence during the simulation course were quite high (mean±standard deviation [SD], 4.06±0.48 and 4.11±0.46 out of 5.0, respectively). In contrast, their confidence when first practicing on a patient was moderate (mean±SD, 3.19±0.62 out of 5.0). Students’ satisfaction showed moderate and weak positive correlations with self-confidence in pre-clinical practice and in clinical practice (r=0.33, P<0.001 and r=0.26, P<0.001, respectively).ConclusionSimulation has become an effective teaching strategy that can help nursing students be well-prepared for clinical placements in Vietnam. An effective nursing education strategy is needed to enhance the satisfaction and self-confidence of nursing students in simulation and then in clinical practice to help achieve professional engagement and development.
