The complete mitochondrial genome of blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena fasciata (Hoyle, 1886) (Octopodiformes; Octopoda; Octopodidae).

ABSTRACT: The complete mitochondrial genome of the highly venomous blue-lined octopus, Hapalochlaena fasciata (Hoyle, 1886), was analyzed by the primer walking method. Its mitogenome was 15,479 bp in total length, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 23 transfer RNA genes. In the phylogenetic tree, the gene content and order were congruent with those of typical octopodiform species. The mitogenomic sequence presented could be very useful as the first record of the complete mitogenome for the genus Hapalochlaena.

Death in the octopus' garden: fatal blue-lined octopus envenomations of adult green sea turtles.

Project description:The blue-lined octopus Hapalochlaena fasciata contains the powerful neuromuscular blocker tetrodotoxin (TTX), which causes muscle weakness and respiratory failure. H. fasciata is regarded as one of the most venomous marine animals in the world, and multiple human fatalities have been attributed to the octopus. To date, there have been no recorded incidents of an envenomation of a wild animal. Here, we present a newly developed, multi-stage tandem mass spectrometry technique that provides unequivocal evidence for two cases of envenomation of two ~110 kg herbivorous green sea turtles by two tiny cryptic blue-lined octopuses (~4 cm body length). These cases of accidental ingestion provide evidence for the first time of the antipredator effect of TTX and highlight a previously unconsidered threat to turtles grazing within seagrass beds.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the southern two-lined salamanders (Eurycea cirrigera) was determined in this study. The complete mitogenome sequence of E. cirrigera is 16,759bp in length and contains 37 genes (13 protein coding genes (PGCs), two ribosomal RNA, 22 transfer RNA genes and one control region). This is the first time of the mitochondrial genome sequencing for E. cirrigera.

Project description:Cheilopdipterus quinquelineatus (Apogonidae) is an interesting species for investigating processes driving population divergence in marine system due to its wide distribution and life-history traits. However, to date, there is a limited genetic resource available for this species, or the family Apogonidae as exemplified by the availability of only two mitogenomes. In this study, we assembled the whole mitochondrial genome of this species yielding a 16,537 bp circular assembly composed of the typical vertebrate mitochondrial features. Phylogenetic inference of the supraordinal group of C. quiquelineatus showed monophyly of the major families.

Characterization of complete mitochondrial genome of two-spot swimming crab Charybdis bimaculata (Miers, 1886).

Project description:The two-spot swimming crab Charybdis bimaculata (Miers, 1886) is an important decapod species in the benthic ecosystem of Korean waters. In this study, we determined its complete mitochondrial genome by the combination of NGS analysis using MiSeq platform and PCR-based cloning method. The circular mitochondrial genome of C. bimaculata was 15,714?bp in length in which the standard set of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes were encoded. Phylogenic analysis showed that C.bimaculata is most closely related to Charybdis feriata. The complete mitogenome sequence information of C. bimaculata would provide useful data for the conservation of their population in the Pacific ocean.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the blue skate Dipturus batis.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the blue skate Dipturus batis is described from shotgun sequencing on an Illumina next-generation sequencing platform. We report a 16,911 bp long sequence similar in size to other members of the genus, containing 13 protein-coding regions, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and 2 non-coding areas. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using the complete mitochondrial genomes of 17 related species, placing D. batis within the Rajini tribe of the Rajidae family, consistent with current taxonomy. The new resource adds to a growing database of rajid mitogenomes which will help resolve phylogenetic relationships within the family.

Project description:Tremoctopus violaceus is a small species of pelagic octopods which inhabit in subtropical and tropical open oceans. The mitogenome of T. violaceus is 16,015 base pairs (bp) in length and contained 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes. Sequence analysis showed that the overall base composition is 31.5% for A, 40.47% for T, 7.79% for C, and 20.24% for G. The newly characterized complete mitochondrial genome of T. violaceus will provide essential data for further studies of this endangered species.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the double-lined fusileer, Pterocaesio digramma, which belongs to the family Caesionidae was determined. The complete mitochondrial genome has a length of 16,504 bp and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, and a control region. P. digramma has a mitochondrial gene arrangement that is typical of vertebrates. Phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial genomes of 15 related species revealed that P. digramma formed a well-supported monophyletic group with the other Caesionidae and Lutjanidae species.

The mitogenome is a circular molecule 16,964 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes (Cox 1, Cox2, Atp 8, Atp 6, Cox 3, ND2, ND5, ND 6, ND3, ND4L,ND1,ND4, Cob), 2 tRNAs (trnW, trnM), 2 rRNA genes (small subunit RNA and large subunit RNA). The neighbor-joining (NJ) phylogenetic tree in the related species showed that C. pacifica is close to Chrysaora quinquecirrha.

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence for the Taiwan Blue Magpie Urocissa caerulea (Passeriformes: Corvidae).

Project description:Taiwan Blue Magpie (Urocissa caerulea) is endemic to Taiwan and listed as threatened species protected by law. In this study, we first determined and described the complete mitochondrial genome of Taiwan Blue Magpie. The circle genome is 16,928 bp in length, and contains 13 protein coding, 22 tRNA, two rRNA genes, and one non-coding control region (CR). The overall base composition of the mitochondrial DNA is 30.99% for A, 24.69% for T, 30.07% for C, and 14.25% for G. The percentage of G + C content is 44.32%. This work provides fundamental molecular data which will be useful for evolution and phylogeny studies on Corvidae in the future.
