GAN-Based Differential Private Image Privacy Protection Framework for the Internet of Multimedia Things.

ABSTRACT: With the development of the Internet of Multimedia Things (IoMT), an increasing amount of image data is collected by various multimedia devices, such as smartphones, cameras, and drones. This massive number of images are widely used in each field of IoMT, which presents substantial challenges for privacy preservation. In this paper, we propose a new image privacy protection framework in an effort to protect the sensitive personal information contained in images collected by IoMT devices. We aim to use deep neural network techniques to identify the privacy-sensitive content in images, and then protect it with the synthetic content generated by generative adversarial networks (GANs) with differential privacy (DP). Our experiment results show that the proposed framework can effectively protect users' privacy while maintaining image utility.

An efficient filter with low memory usage for multimedia data of industrial Internet of Things.

Project description:One of the essential concerns of Internet of Things (IoT) is in industrial systems or data architecture to support the evolutions in transportation and logistics. Considering the Industrial IoT (IIoT) openness, the need for accessibility, availability, and searching of data has rapidly increased. The primary purpose of this research is to propose an Efficient Two-Dimensional Filter (ETDF) to store multimedia data of IIoT applications in a specific format to achieve faster response and dynamic updating. This filter consists of a two-dimensional array and a hash function integrated into a cuckoo filter for efficient use of memory. This study evaluates the scalability of the filter by increasing the number of requests from 10,000 to 100,000. To assess the performance of the proposed filter, we measure the parameters of access time and lookup message latency. The results show that the proposed filter improves the access time by 12%, compared to a Fast Two-Dimensional Filter (FTDF). Moreover, it improves memory usage by 20% compared to FTDF. Experiments indicate a better access time of the proposed filter compared to other filters (i.e., Bloom, quotient, cuckoo, and FTD filters). Insertion and deletion times are essential parameters in comparing filters, so they are also analyzed.

Exploration of Chinese cultural communication mode based on the Internet of Things and mobile multimedia technology.

Project description:Image retrieval technology has emerged as a popular research area of China's development of cultural digital image dissemination and creative creation with the growth of the Internet and the digital information age. This study uses the shadow image in Shaanxi culture as the research object, suggests a shadow image retrieval model based on CBAM-ResNet50, and implements it in the IoT system to achieve more effective deep-level cultural information retrieval. First, ResNet50 is paired with an attention mechanism to enhance the network's capacity to extract sophisticated semantic characteristics. The second step is configuring the IoT system's picture acquisition, processing, and output modules. The image processing module incorporates the CBAM-ResNet50 network to provide intelligent and effective shadow play picture retrieval. The experiment results show that shadow plays on GPU can retrieve images at a millisecond level. Both the first image and the first six photographs may be accurately retrieved, with a retrieval accuracy of 92.5 percent for the first image. This effectively communicates Chinese culture and makes it possible to retrieve detailed shadow-play images.

Natural differential privacy-a perspective on protection guarantees.

Project description:We introduce "Natural" differential privacy (NDP)-which utilizes features of existing hardware architecture to implement differentially private computations. We show that NDP both guarantees strong bounds on privacy loss and constitutes a practical exception to no-free-lunch theorems on privacy. We describe how NDP can be efficiently implemented and how it aligns with recognized privacy principles and frameworks. We discuss the importance of formal protection guarantees and the relationship between formal and substantive protections.

Narrowband-Internet of Things Device-to-Device Simulation: An Open-Sourced Framework.

Project description:Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) displays high-quality connectivity underpinned by fifth-generation (5G) networks to cover a wide array of IoT applications. The devices' development and integration into different smart systems require permanent control, supervision, and the study of power consumption models to determine the performance of the network topology and allow for the measurement of the efficiency of the network topology's application. This paper reports on an architecture and open-sourced simulation that was developed to study NB-IoT in Device-to-Device (D2D) mode, which includes the Physical (PHY), network, and application layers, as well as a queuing model, the model for uplink and downlink delays, the throughput, the overall NB-IoT D2D network performance, and the energy consumption based on the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol. Our results prove that the suggested framework contributes to a reduction in power consumption, a minimization of queuing delays, a decrease in communication cost, a reduction in inter-cluster collisions, and the prevention of attacks from malicious nodes. Consequently, the framework manages the battery's State of Charge (SOC), improves the battery's State of Health (SOH), and maximizes the whole network lifetime. The proposed framework, the code of which has been open-sourced, can be effectively used for scientific research and development purposes to evaluate different parameters and improve the planning of NB-IoT networks.

A standardised differential privacy framework for epidemiological modeling with mobile phone data.

Project description:During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of mobile phone data for monitoring human mobility patterns has become increasingly common, both to study the impact of travel restrictions on population movement and epidemiological modeling. Despite the importance of these data, the use of location information to guide public policy can raise issues of privacy and ethical use. Studies have shown that simple aggregation does not protect the privacy of an individual, and there are no universal standards for aggregation that guarantee anonymity. Newer methods, such as differential privacy, can provide statistically verifiable protection against identifiability but have been largely untested as inputs for compartment models used in infectious disease epidemiology. Our study examines the application of differential privacy as an anonymisation tool in epidemiological models, studying the impact of adding quantifiable statistical noise to mobile phone-based location data on the bias of ten common epidemiological metrics. We find that many epidemiological metrics are preserved and remain close to their non-private values when the true noise state is less than 20, in a count transition matrix, which corresponds to a privacy-less parameter ϵ = 0.05 per release. We show that differential privacy offers a robust approach to preserving individual privacy in mobility data while providing useful population-level insights for public health. Importantly, we have built a modular software pipeline to facilitate the replication and expansion of our framework.

Distribution-Invariant Differential Privacy.

Project description:Differential privacy is becoming one gold standard for protecting the privacy of publicly shared data. It has been widely used in social science, data science, public health, information technology, and the U.S. decennial census. Nevertheless, to guarantee differential privacy, existing methods may unavoidably alter the conclusion of original data analysis, as privatization often changes the sample distribution. This phenomenon is known as the trade-off between privacy protection and statistical accuracy. In this work, we mitigate this trade-off by developing a distribution-invariant privatization (DIP) method to reconcile both high statistical accuracy and strict differential privacy. As a result, any downstream statistical or machine learning task yields essentially the same conclusion as if one used the original data. Numerically, under the same strictness of privacy protection, DIP achieves superior statistical accuracy in a wide range of simulation studies and real-world benchmarks.

Internet of things (IoT) based coordination system in Agri-food supply chain: development of an efficient framework using DEMATEL-ISM

Project description:Supply Chain Management (SCM) is one of the key aspects of making agriculture sector more competitive in India. India and other developing countries arefacing issues for coordination of their Agriculture Food Supply Chain Management (AFSCM) as not having technical and resources support; especially in natural disaster condition like recent COVID-19 outbreak. The purpose of this research is to develop anInternet of Things (IoT) based efficient and supportive coordinating system for enhancing the coordinating mechanism in AFSC under natural outbreaks. With the help of a literature review and experts’ inputs, seven enablers have been identified by grouping thirty sub enablers. Further, ISM methodology has been employed for developing a framework for enablers’ relationships to improve the coordination in the AFSC for taking strategic and operational decisions. After that, DEMATELtechnique is utilised to develop the causal and effectrelationships between all the identified enablers of a coordination system in IoT based AFSC. It has been noticed that‘Top Management Support (TMS)’ is the main driver by MICMAC analysis and categorised in a cause group based on (R-C) value. Further, the coordination index of the entire model is calculated based on the Cleveland theory. This paper also discussed a case study of the sugar mill industry. This paper also discussed stakeholder theory in developing IoT based coordination system of AFSC. Further, theoretical contribution may also guide the managers of the organisation in developing their strategies by using Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) analysis based on Cleveland index.

Differentially Private Bayesian Neural Networks on Accuracy, Privacy and Reliability.

Project description:Bayesian neural network (BNN) allows for uncertainty quantification in prediction, offering an advantage over regular neural networks that has not been explored in the differential privacy (DP) framework. We fill this important gap by leveraging recent development in Bayesian deep learning and privacy accounting to offer a more precise analysis of the trade-off between privacy and accuracy in BNN. We propose three DP-BNNs that characterize the weight uncertainty for the same network architecture in distinct ways, namely DP-SGLD (via the noisy gradient method), DP-BBP (via changing the parameters of interest) and DP-MC Dropout (via the model architecture). Interestingly, we show a new equivalence between DP-SGD and DP-SGLD, implying that some non-Bayesian DP training naturally allows for uncertainty quantification. However, the hyperparameters such as learning rate and batch size, can have different or even opposite effects in DP-SGD and DP-SGLD. Extensive experiments are conducted to compare DP-BNNs, in terms of privacy guarantee, prediction accuracy, uncertainty quantification, calibration, computation speed, and generalizability to network architecture. As a result, we observe a new tradeoff between the privacy and the reliability. When compared to non-DP and non-Bayesian approaches, DP-SGLD is remarkably accurate under strong privacy guarantee, demonstrating the great potential of DP-BNN in real-world tasks.
