Complete mitochondrial genome of yellow-rumped honeyguide Indicator xanthonotus (Piciformes: Indicatoridae).

ABSTRACT: In this study, we first sequenced and described the complete mitochondrial genome and phylogeny of Indicator xanthonotus. The whole genome of I. xanthonotus was 17,603?bp in length and contained 14 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosome RNA genes, and two non-coding control regions. The overall base composition of the mitochondrial DNA was 31.09% for A, 27.34% for T, 28.96% for C, and 12.61% for G, with a GC content of 41.57%. A phylogenetic tree strongly supported that I. xanthonotus clustered with another Piciformes species by high probability.

Project description:In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of band-rumped Storm-petrel, Hydrobates castro, was determined through sequencing of PCR fragments. The complete mitochondrial genome of H. castro was 17,065?bp in length and encoded 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The overall nucleotide composition is: 30.4% A, 24.5% T, 30.9% C, and 14.2% G, with a total G?+?C content of 45.1%. By phylogenetic analysis using Bayes method, H. castro showed the closest relationship with the white-faced storm petrel (Pelagodroma marina).

Complete mitochondrial genome of yellow meal worm (Tenebrio molitor).

Project description:The yellow meal worm (Tenebrio molitor L.) is an important resource insect typically used as animal feed additive. It is also widely used for biological research. The first complete mitochondrial genome of T. molitor was determined for the first time by long PCR and conserved primer walking approaches. The results showed that the entire mitogenome of T. molitor was 15 785 bp long, with 72.35% A+T content [deposited in GenBank with accession number KF418153]. The gene order and orientation were the same as the most common type suggested as ancestral for insects. Two protein-coding genes used atypical start codons (CTA in ND2 and AAT in COX1), and the remaining 11 protein-coding genes started with a typical insect initiation codon ATN. All tRNAs showed standard clover-leaf structure, except for tRNA(Ser) (AGN), which lacked a dihydrouridine (DHU) arm. The newly added T. molitor mitogenome could provide information for future studies on yellow meal worm.

The genome is 16,829?bp in length and consists of 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 1 control region (D-loop), and 22 tRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using the Bayesian analysis method, indicating that M. tschutschensis was closely related to Motacillalugens and Motacillaalba.

Project description:The yellow-spotted triggerfish (Pseudobalistes fuscus), a member of the genus Pseudobalistes, belongs to the family Balistidae. Here, we describe the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of P. fuscus. The genome, 16,480?bp in length, is comprised of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs and a major non-coding region. The gene content and order are in accord with the common vertebrate form. A phylogenic tree was constructed based on the complete mitogenomes of P. fuscus and six closely related species to estimate their phylogenic relationship. Our data present an important genetic resource for the biological studies of the family Balistidae.

The mitogenomes contained the typical complement of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 2 ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), and a non-coding control region. They share the same gene arrangement pattern that was identical with most vertebrates. The entire mitochondrial DNA molecule of golden yellow snakehead fish was 16,558?bp long. All information reported in this article will be a useful source of sequence information for general molecular and evolutionary studies of the family Channidae.

The complete mitochondrial genome of yellow crazy ant, Anoplolepis gracilipes (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Project description:The yellow crazy ant Anoplolepis gracilipes is an invasive species that threatens biodiversity in introduced ecosystems. We sequenced the A. gracilipes mitogenome using next-generation sequencing methods. The circular mitogenome of A. gracilipes was 16,943?bp included 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single large non-coding region of 893?bp. The base composition was AT-biased (72%). Three genomic rearrangements compared to ancestral insects were found. Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated nucleotide sequences of the 13 protein-coding genes supports A. gracilipes belonging to the Formicinae subfamily. We announce the A. gracilipes mitogenome as a DNA reference for further population genetic, phylogenetic, and evolutionary analyses.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the yellow-spotted grayling Thymallus flavomaculatus (Salmoniformes, Salmonidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome was sequenced in two individuals of yellow-spotted grayling Thymallus flavomaculatus. The genome sequences are 16,659?bp in size, and the gene arrangement, composition and size are very similar to the salmonid fish genomes published previously. The low level of sequence divergence detected between the genome of Th. flavomaculatus and the GenBank complete mitochondrial genomes of the Th. yaluensis (KJ866484) and Th. grubii (KF649073) may likely be due to recent divergence of the species and/or historical hybridization and interspecific replacement of mtDNA.

Prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in the yellow-rumped warbler hybrid zone.

Project description:Parasites can play a role in speciation, by exerting different selection pressures on different host lineages, leading to reproductive barriers in regions of possible interbreeding. Hybrid zones therefore offer an ideal system to study the effect of parasites on speciation. Here, we study a hybrid zone in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains where two yellow-rumped warbler subspecies, Setophaga coronata coronata and S. c. auduboni, interbreed. There is partial reproductive isolation between them, but no evidence of strong assortative mating within the hybrid zone, suggesting the existence of a postzygotic selection against hybrids. Here, we test whether haemosporidian parasites might play a role in selecting against hybrids between S. c. coronata and S. c. auduboni. We screened birds from five transects across the hybrid zone for three phylogenetic groupings of avian haemosporidians Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon parasites and quantified intensity of infection. Contrary to our prediction, hybrids did not have higher haemosporidian parasite prevalence. Variation in Haemoproteus prevalence was best explained by an interaction between a birds' hybrid index and elevation, while the probability of infection with Leucocytozoon parasites was only influenced by elevation. We also found no significant difference in the diversity of haemosporidian lineages between the warbler subspecies and their hybrids. Finally, intensity of infection by Haemoproteus increased significantly with elevation, but was not significantly linked to birds' hybrid index. In conclusion, our data suggest that haemosporidian parasites do not seem to play a major role in selecting against hybrids in this system.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the yellow-legged Asian hornet, Vespa velutina nigrithorax (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

Project description:The yellow-legged Asian hornet, Vespa velutina nigrithorax, which originated from Asia, has invaded several countries, including South Korea. In Korea, V. velutina nigrithorax predation on honeybees is one of the most serious factors threatening apiculture. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of V. velutina to better understand the mitogenomic characteristics of this species. The 16,475?bp mitogenome of V. velutina consists of a typical set of genes, with an arrangement identical to that of congeneric species. Vespa velutina possesses the shortest A?+?T-rich region (132?bp) among congeneric Vespa, and this is also the shortest in the superfamily Vespoidea. Phylogenetic analysis using the 13 protein-coding genes of Vespoidea species indicated that each family forms strongly supported monophyletic groups (Bayesian posterior probability =1; ML, 100%). Moreover, V. velutina and V. bicolor form strongly supported sister groups (Bayesian posterior probability =1; ML, 100%).

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of yellow stripe mutant in onion (Allium cepa L.).

Project description:The complete onion of yellow stripe mutant tissues mitochondrial genome was determined and analyzed in this study. The complete sequence length is 324,182 bp, including 37 CDS, 13 tRNA, and G + C content percentage of 45. Compared with the normal onions, 556 SNPs, 279 small indel numbers were detected, and the mutations of 14 SNPs and two small indels in the exon region affected the translation of proteins. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that yellow stripe mutant onion is closely clustered with other Allium cepa L. The mutant of onion plays an important role in developing molecular marker-assisted breeding.
