Deep learning-based pupil model predicts time and spectral dependent light responses.

ABSTRACT: Although research has made significant findings in the neurophysiological process behind the pupillary light reflex, the temporal prediction of the pupil diameter triggered by polychromatic or chromatic stimulus spectra is still not possible. State of the art pupil models rested in estimating a static diameter at the equilibrium-state for spectra along the Planckian locus. Neither the temporal receptor-weighting nor the spectral-dependent adaptation behaviour of the afferent pupil control path is mapped in such functions. Here we propose a deep learning-driven concept of a pupil model, which reconstructs the pupil's time course either from photometric and colourimetric or receptor-based stimulus quantities. By merging feed-forward neural networks with a biomechanical differential equation, we predict the temporal pupil light response with a mean absolute error below 0.1 mm from polychromatic (2007 [Formula: see text] 1 K, 4983 [Formula: see text] 3 K, 10,138 [Formula: see text] 22 K) and chromatic spectra (450 nm, 530 nm, 610 nm, 660 nm) at 100.01 ± 0.25 cd/m². This non-parametric and self-learning concept could open the door to a generalized description of the pupil behaviour.

Project description:BackgroundChanges in body temperature anticipate labor onset in numerous mammals, yet this concept has not been explored in humans. We investigated if continuous body temperature exhibits similar changes in women and whether these changes may be linked to hormonal status. Finally, we developed a deep learning model using temperature patterning to provide a daily forecast of time to labor onset.MethodsWe evaluated patterns in continuous skin temperature data in 91 (n = 54 spontaneous labors) pregnant women using a wearable smart ring. In a subset of 28 pregnancies, we examined daily steroid hormone samples leading up to labor to analyze relationships among hormones and body temperature trajectory. Finally, we applied an autoencoder long short-term memory (AE-LSTM) deep learning model to provide a novel daily estimation of days until labor onset.ResultsFeatures of temperature change leading up to labor were associated with urinary hormones and labor type. Spontaneous labors exhibited greater estriol to α-pregnanediol ratio, as well as lower body temperature and more stable circadian rhythms compared to pregnancies that did not undergo spontaneous labor. Skin temperature data from 54 pregnancies that underwent spontaneous labor between 34 and 42 weeks of gestation were included in training the AE-LSTM model, and an additional 37 pregnancies that underwent artificial induction of labor or Cesarean without labor were used for further testing. The input to the pipeline was 5-min skin temperature data from a gestational age of 240 days until the day of labor onset. During cross-validation AE-LSTM average error (true - predicted) dropped below 2 days at 8 days before labor, independent of gestational age. Labor onset windows were calculated from the AE-LSTM output using a probabilistic distribution of model error. For these windows AE-LSTM correctly predicted labor start for 79% of the spontaneous labors within a 4.6-day window at 7 days before true labor, and 7.4-day window at 10 days before true labor.ConclusionContinuous skin temperature reflects progression toward labor and hormonal change during pregnancy. Deep learning using continuous temperature may provide clinically valuable tools for pregnancy care.

Project description:Background and objectivesIntradialytic hypotension has high clinical significance. However, predicting it using conventional statistical models may be difficult because several factors have interactive and complex effects on the risk. Herein, we applied a deep learning model (recurrent neural network) to predict the risk of intradialytic hypotension using a timestamp-bearing dataset.Design, setting, participants, & measurementsWe obtained 261,647 hemodialysis sessions with 1,600,531 independent timestamps (i.e., time-varying vital signs) and randomly divided them into training (70%), validation (5%), calibration (5%), and testing (20%) sets. Intradialytic hypotension was defined when nadir systolic BP was <90 mm Hg (termed intradialytic hypotension 1) or when a decrease in systolic BP ≥20 mm Hg and/or a decrease in mean arterial pressure ≥10 mm Hg on the basis of the initial BPs (termed intradialytic hypotension 2) or prediction time BPs (termed intradialytic hypotension 3) occurred within 1 hour. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curves, the area under the precision-recall curves, and F1 scores obtained using the recurrent neural network model were compared with those obtained using multilayer perceptron, Light Gradient Boosting Machine, and logistic regression models.ResultsThe recurrent neural network model for predicting intradialytic hypotension 1 achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.94 (95% confidence intervals, 0.94 to 0.94), which was higher than those obtained using the other models (P<0.001). The recurrent neural network model for predicting intradialytic hypotension 2 and intradialytic hypotension 3 achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.87 (interquartile range, 0.87-0.87) and 0.79 (interquartile range, 0.79-0.79), respectively, which were also higher than those obtained using the other models (P≤0.001). The area under the precision-recall curve and F1 score were higher using the recurrent neural network model than they were using the other models. The recurrent neural network models for intradialytic hypotension were highly calibrated.ConclusionsOur deep learning model can be used to predict the real-time risk of intradialytic hypotension.
