Robot Collection and Transport of Objects: A Biomimetic Process.

ABSTRACT: Animals as diverse as ants and humans are faced with the tasks of collecting, transporting or herding objects. Sheepdogs do this daily when they collect, herd, and maneuver flocks of sheep. Here, we adapt a shepherding algorithm inspired by sheepdogs to collect and transport objects using a robot. Our approach produces an effective robot collection process that autonomously adapts to changing environmental conditions and is robust to noise from various sources. We suggest that this biomimetic process could be implemented into suitable robots to perform collection and transport tasks that might include - for example - cleaning up objects in the environment, keeping animals away from sensitive areas or collecting and herding animals to a specific location. Furthermore, the feedback controlled interactions between the robot and objects which we study can be used to interrogate and understand the local and global interactions of real animal groups, thus offering a novel methodology of value to researchers studying collective animal behavior.

Soft Biomimetic Fish Robot Made of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators.

Project description:This article presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a soft biomimetic robotic fish based on dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) that swims by body and/or caudal fin (BCF) propulsion. BCF is a promising locomotion mechanism that potentially offers swimming at higher speeds and acceleration rates, and efficient locomotion. The robot consists of laminated silicone layers wherein two DEAs are used in an antagonistic configuration, generating undulating fish-like motion. The design of the robot is guided by a mathematical model based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and takes account of the nonuniform geometry of the robot and of the hydrodynamic effect of water. The modeling results were compared with the experimental results obtained from the fish robot with a total length of 150 mm, a thickness of 0.75 mm, and weight of 4.4 g. We observed that the frequency peaks in the measured thrust force produced by the robot are similar to the natural frequencies computed by the model. The peak swimming speed of the robot was 37.2 mm/s (0.25 body length/s) at 0.75 Hz. We also observed that the modal shape of the robot at this frequency corresponds to the first natural mode. The swimming of the robot resembles real fish and displays a Strouhal number very close to those of living fish. These results suggest the high potential of DEA-based underwater robots relying on BCF propulsion, and applicability of our design and fabrication methods.

Bio-inspired magnetic-driven folded diaphragm for biomimetic robot.

Project description:Functional soft materials, exhibiting multiple types of deformation, have shown their potential/abilities to achieve complicated biomimetic behaviors (soft robots). Inspired by the locomotion of earthworm, which is conducted through the contraction and stretching between body segments, this study proposes a type of one-piece-mold folded diaphragm, consisting of the structure of body segments with radial magnetization property, to achieve large 3D and bi-directional deformation with inside-volume change capability subjected to the low homogeneous magnetically driving field (40 mT). Moreover, the appearance based on the proposed magnetic-driven folded diaphragm is able to be easily customized to desired ones and then implanted into different untethered soft robotic systems as soft drivers. To verify the above points, we design the diaphragm pump providing unique properties of lightweight, powerful output and rapid response, and the soft robot including the bio-earthworm crawling robot and swimming robot inspired by squid to exhibit the flexible and rapid locomotion excited by single homogeneous magnetic fields.

Biomimetic chameleon soft robot with artificial crypsis and disruptive coloration skin.

Project description:Development of an artificial camouflage at a complete device level remains a vastly challenging task, especially under the aim of achieving more advanced and natural camouflage characteristics via high-resolution camouflage patterns. Our strategy is to integrate a thermochromic liquid crystal layer with the vertically stacked, patterned silver nanowire heaters in a multilayer structure to overcome the limitations of the conventional lateral pixelated scheme through the superposition of the heater-induced temperature profiles. At the same time, the weaknesses of thermochromic camouflage schemes are resolved in this study by utilizing the temperature-dependent resistance of the silver nanowire network as the process variable of the active control system. Combined with the active control system and sensing units, the complete device chameleon model successfully retrieves the local background color and matches its surface color instantaneously with natural transition characteristics to be a competent option for a next-generation artificial camouflage.

A Biomimetic Fish Fin-Like Robot Based on Textile Reinforced Silicone.

Project description:The concept of merging pre-processed textile materials with tailored mechanical properties into soft matrices is so far rarely used in the field of soft robotics. The herein presented work takes the advantages of textile materials in elastomer matrices to another level by integrating a material with highly anisotropic bending properties. A pre-fabricated textile material consisting of oriented carbon fibers is used as a stiff component to precisely control the mechanical behavior of the robotic setup. The presented robotic concept uses a multi-layer stack for the robot's body and dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) on both outer sides of it. The bending motion of the whole structure results from the combination of its mechanically adjusted properties and the force generation of the DEAs. We present an antagonistic switching setup for the DEAs that leads to deflections to both sides of the robot, following a biomimetic principle. To investigate the bending behavior of the robot, we show a simulation model utilizing electromechanical coupling to estimate the quasi-static deflection of the structure. Based on this model, a statement about the bending behavior of the structure in general is made, leading to an expected maximum deflection of 10 mm at the end of the fin for a static activation. Furthermore, we present an electromechanical network model to evaluate the frequency dependent behavior of the robot's movement, predicting a resonance frequency of 6.385 Hz for the dynamic switching case. Both models in combination lead to a prediction about the acting behavior of the robot. These theoretical predictions are underpinned by dynamic performance measurements in air for different switching frequencies of the DEAs, leading to a maximum deflection of 9.3 mm located at the end of the actuators. The herein presented work places special focus on the mechanical resonance frequency of the robotic setup with regard to maximum deflections.

SignBase, a collection of geometric signs on mobile objects in the Paleolithic.

Project description:In the Paleolithic, geometric signs are abundant. They appear in rock art as well as on mobile objects like artworks, tools, or personal ornaments. These signs are often interpreted as a reflection of symbolic thought and associated with the origin of cognitively modern behavior. SignBase is a project collecting the wealth of geometric signs on mobile objects in the European Upper Paleolithic, African Middle Stone Age (MSA), as well as selected sites from the Near East and South East Asia. Currently, more than 500 objects of the Aurignacian techno-complex (ca. 43,000 to 30,000 years BP) are registered in SignBase. They are linked to information about geographic and archaeological provenience, the type of object and material, size and preservation, and respective literature references. We identify around 30 different sign types found on these objects across Europe in the Aurignacian and illustrate how SignBase can be used to analyze geographical clusters. Ultimately, we aim to enable quantitative analyses of abstract graphical expression before the emergence of writing.

A simple strategy for detecting moving objects during locomotion revealed by animal-robot interactions.

Project description:An important role of visual systems is to detect nearby predators, prey, and potential mates, which may be distinguished in part by their motion. When an animal is at rest, an object moving in any direction may easily be detected by motion-sensitive visual circuits. During locomotion, however, this strategy is compromised because the observer must detect a moving object within the pattern of optic flow created by its own motion through the stationary background. However, objects that move creating back-to-front (regressive) motion may be unambiguously distinguished from stationary objects because forward locomotion creates only front-to-back (progressive) optic flow. Thus, moving animals should exhibit an enhanced sensitivity to regressively moving objects. We explicitly tested this hypothesis by constructing a simple fly-sized robot that was programmed to interact with a real fly. Our measurements indicate that whereas walking female flies freeze in response to a regressively moving object, they ignore a progressively moving one. Regressive motion salience also explains observations of behaviors exhibited by pairs of walking flies. Because the assumptions underlying the regressive motion salience hypothesis are general, we suspect that the behavior we have observed in Drosophila may be widespread among eyed, motile organisms.

Surface morphology enhances deposition efficiency in biomimetic, wind-driven fog collection.

Project description:Passive interception of fog from the wind is an effective solution for accessing water in regions where fog is frequent and other sources scarce. A Namib Desert beetle is often cited as bioinspiration for further advancement, in a narrative which focuses on patterned wettability of its bumpy elytra as a means of transporting accumulated water from its back to its mouth. However, surface transport in fog collection is secondary to the role of the fluid dynamics of droplet deposition, in which inertial droplets migrate across diverging streamlines approaching an obstruction. 3D geometry of biological surface features inevitably affect this process, but its specific role in flow physics of fog collection has not previously been explored. Here, we report experimental measurements of deposition efficiency of targets with identical surface chemistry but varying surface morphology. We find a nearly threefold increase in collection upon addition of millimetric bumps to a spherical target, and provide insight into the micromechanics underlying the performance. Modifying surface morphology can be easier than overall geometry for both manufactured structures and evolved organisms and should therefore be both considered in the design of separation devices and expected in other biological systems for which extraction of particles from flow is important.

Towards an integrated automatic design process for robot swarms.

Project description:Background: The specification of missions to be accomplished by a robot swarm has been rarely discussed in the literature: designers do not follow any standardized processes or use any tool to precisely define a mission that must be accomplished. Methods: In this paper, we introduce a fully integrated design process that starts with the specification of a mission to be accomplished and terminates with the deployment of the robots in the target environment. We introduce Swarm Mission Language (SML), a textual language that allows swarm designers to specify missions. Using model-driven engineering techniques, we define a process that automatically transforms a mission specified in SML into a configuration setup for an optimization-based design method. Upon completion, the output of the optimization-based design method is an instance of control software that is eventually deployed on real robots. Results: We demonstrate the fully integrated process we propose on three different missions. Conclusions: We aim to show that in order to create reliable, maintainable and verifiable robot swarms, swarm designers may benefit from following standardised automatic design processes that will facilitate the design of control software in all stages of the development.

Biomimetic Design of Protein Nanomaterials for Hydrophobic Molecular Transport.

Project description:Biomaterials such as self-assembling biological complexes have demonstrated a variety of applications in materials science and nanotechnology. The functionality of protein-based materials, however, is often limited by the absence or locations of specific chemical conjugation sites. In this investigation, we developed a new strategy for loading organic molecules into the hollow cavity of a protein nanoparticle that relies only on non-covalent interactions, and we demonstrated its applicability in drug delivery. Based on a biomimetic model that incorporates multiple phenylalanines to create a generalized binding site, we retained and delivered the antitumor compound doxorubicin by redesigning a caged protein scaffold. Through an iterative combination of structural modeling and protein engineering, we obtained new variants of the E2 subunit of pyruvate dehydrogenase with varying levels of drug-carrying capabilities. We found that an increasing number of introduced phenylalanines within the scaffold cavity generally resulted in greater drug loading capacities. Drug loading levels could be achieved that were greater than conventional nanoparticle delivery systems. These protein nanoparticles containing doxorubicin were taken up by breast cancer cells and induced significant cell death. Our novel approach demonstrates a universal strategy to design de novo hydrophobic binding domains within protein-based scaffolds for molecular encapsulation and transport, and it broadens the ability to attach guest molecules to this class of materials.
