Wearable porous PDMS layer of high moisture permeability for skin trouble reduction.

ABSTRACT: The present research proposes the present porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer for the skin trouble reduced daily life skin attachable devices. The present research proposes the new pores forming method in the PDMS by crystallization and dissolution of the citric acid in the PDMS for fabricating high uniform and small size pores. The present porous PDMS layer (i) decreases the pore size 93.2%p and increases the pore size uniformity 425%p compared to the conventional porous PDMS layer of mixing sugars and PDMS; (ii) is able to be fabricated in the thickness of 21-101 µm by spin-coating; (iii) has the 2.2 times higher water vapor transmission rate (947?±?10.8 g/day•m²) compared to the human skin water vapor transmission rate. The present porous PDMS layer reduces the skin trouble effectively by having the high water vapor permeability, therefore is applicable to the human daily-life skin attachable devices.

Flexible Tactile Electronic Skin Sensor with 3D Force Detection Based on Porous CNTs/PDMS Nanocomposites.

Project description:Flexible tactile sensors have broad applications in human physiological monitoring, robotic operation and human-machine interaction. However, the research of wearable and flexible tactile sensors with high sensitivity, wide sensing range and ability to detect three-dimensional (3D) force is still very challenging. Herein, a flexible tactile electronic skin sensor based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposites is presented for 3D contact force detection. The 3D forces were acquired from combination of four specially designed cells in a sensing element. Contributed from the double-sided rough porous structure and specific surface morphology of nanocomposites, the piezoresistive sensor possesses high sensitivity of 12.1 kPa-1 within the range of 600 Pa and 0.68 kPa-1 in the regime exceeding 1 kPa for normal pressure, as well as 59.9 N-1 in the scope of < 0.05 N and > 2.3 N-1 in the region of < 0.6 N for tangential force with ultra-low response time of 3.1 ms. In addition, multi-functional detection in human body monitoring was employed with single sensing cell and the sensor array was integrated into a robotic arm for objects grasping control, indicating the capacities in intelligent robot applications.

Heterogeneity of hard skin layer in wrinkled PDMS surface fabricated by Ar ion-beam irradiation.

Project description:The spatial distribution of binding states in the depth direction of a soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) material was investigated in the hard skin layer formed by Ar ion-beam irradiation. The hard skin layer, typically considered silica-like and homogeneous, was heterogeneous, comprising a topmost layer and an intermediate layer. Impinging Ar ions transferred energy to the PDMS medium by collisional energy transfer, which was maximised at the surface and decreased gradually as the ions penetrated the PDMS. The decreasing energy transfer rate from the surface created a heterogeneous hard skin layer. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic depth profiling showed the existence of the topmost and intermediate layers. In the topmost layer, scission and cross-linking occurred simultaneously; Si-O bonds showed the dissociated state of SiOx (x = 1.25-1.5). Under the topmost layer, the intermediate layer showed mostly cross-linking, with Si-O bonds showing silica-like binding states of SiOx (x = 1.75-2). The spatial distribution of carbon-related bonds such as C-Si and sp3 C-C also showed heterogeneity, yielding a gradient of bond distribution. A theoretical analysis of the collisional energy transfer rate and displacement per atom showed consistency with the XPS depth profiling results.

High performance layer-by-layer Pt<sub>3</sub>Ni(Pt-skin)-modified Pd/C for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:Bimetallic Pt-Ni with Pt on the outermost layer and an innermost layer enriched in Ni, referred to as Pt3Ni(Pt-skin), is a promising configuration of an electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. We prepare a core (Pd)/shell (Pt3Ni(Pt-skin)) catalyst (Pt3Ni(Pt-skin)/Pd/C) from Zn underpotential deposition (UPD) on a Ni UPD modified Pd/C catalyst, facilitating Pt atomic layer-by-layer growth on the Ni surface through the galvanic replacement process. Pt3Ni(Pt-skin)/Pd/C shows the best ORR performance, with a Pt specific activity of 16.7 mA cm-2 and Pt mass activity of 14.2 A mgPt-1, which are 90- and 156- fold improvements over commercial Pt/C catalysts. The Pt3Ni(Pt-skin) structure effectively inhibits Ni leaching to improve the durability in two accelerated durability test modes mimicking the catalyst lifetime and start-up/shut-down cycles.

Layer-by-layer biofunctionalization of nanostructured porous silicon for high-sensitivity and high-selectivity label-free affinity biosensing.

Project description:Nanostructured materials premise to revolutionize the label-free biosensing of analytes for clinical applications, leveraging the deeper interaction between materials and analytes with comparable size. However, when the characteristic dimension of the materials reduces to the nanoscale, the surface functionalization for the binding of bioreceptors becomes a complex issue that can affect the performance of label-free biosensors. Here we report on an effective and robust route for surface biofunctionalization of nanostructured materials based on the layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic nano-assembly of oppositely-charged polyelectrolytes, which are engineered with bioreceptors to enable label-free detection of target analytes. LbL biofunctionalization is demonstrated using nanostructured porous silicon (PSi) interferometers for affinity detection of streptavidin in saliva, through LbL nano-assembly of a bi-layer of positively-charged poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and negatively-charged biotinylated poly(methacrylic acid) (b-PMAA). High sensitivity in streptavidin detection is achieved, with high selectivity and stability, down to a detection limit of 600 fM.

Flexible and Wearable PDMS-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerator for Self-Powered Tactile Sensing.

Project description:Flexible electronics devices with tactile perception can sense the mechanical property data of the environment and the human body, and they present a huge potential in the human health system. In particular, the introduction of ultra-flexible and self-powered characteristics to tactile sensors can effectively reduce the problems caused by rigid batteries. Herein, we report a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), mainly consisting of an ultra-flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film with micro-pyramid-structure and sputtered aluminum electrodes, which achieves highly conformal contact with skin and the self-powered detection of human body motions. The flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was selected as spacer layer, which made the sensor work in the contact-separation mode and endowed the perfect coupling of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Moreover, the controllable and uniform micro-structure PDMS film was fabricated by using the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) manufacturing process, bringing a good sensitivity and high output performance to the device. The developed TENG can directly convert mechanical energy into electric energy and light up 110 green Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Furthermore, the TENG-based sensor displays good sensitivity (2.54 V/kPa), excellent linearity (R2 = 0.99522) and good stability (over 30,000 cycles). By virtue of the compact size, great electrical properties, and great mechanical properties, the developed sensor can be conformally attached to human skin to monitor joint movements, presenting a promising application in wearable tactile devices. We believe that the ultra-flexible and self-powered tactile TENG-based sensor could have tremendous application in wearable electrons.

Skin-Inspired Pressure Sensor with MXene/P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) as Active Layer for Wearable Electronics.

Project description:Multi-functional electronic skin is of paramount significance for wearable electronics in health monitoring, medical analysis, and human-machine interfacing systems. In order to achieve the function of natural skin, mechanical sensing with high sensitivity is an important feature of electronic skin. Inspired by the spinosum structure under the skin, herein, we fabricate a new capacitive pressure sensor with two-dimensional transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXene) and ferroelectric polymer (P(VDF-TrFE-CFE)) as an active layer and micropatterned Cr-Au deposited on polydimethylsiloxane as flexible electrodes. Such a method is facile, effective, easily operated, and low-cost. The device design provides great capacitive change as a consequence of large deformation under pressure. Benefiting from the randomly distributed microstructure and high dielectric constant of the active layer, the device demonstrates high sensitivity with great linearity (16.0 kPa-1 for less than 10 kPa), that is, a low detection limit of 8.9 Pa, and quick response. A series of dynamic physiological signals, including typing, knuckle motion, and voice recognition can be facilely detected, making it a competitive candidate in the field of wearable electronics.

Mechanical behavior of SiNC layers on PDMS: effects of layer thickness, PDMS modulus, and SiNC surface functionality.

Project description:Thin layers of nanomaterials on stretchable substrates have the potential to enable stretchable, bendable optoelectronic devices, wearable diagnostics, and more. Recently, our group reported on a novel method for finding the neo-Hookean coefficient of thin layers of silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Here we elaborate on that initial study by examining the effects of the SiNC layer thickness, PDMS neo-Hookean coefficient, and SiNC surface functionality on the neo-Hookean coefficient of the SiNC layers. We found that, while the layer thickness and PDMS neo-Hookean coefficient influence the behavior of the SiNC layers, layers of surface-functionalized SiNCs do not exhibit disparate behavior from layers of bare SiNCs.

Layer-by-Layer Deposition of Low-Solid Nanochitin Emulgels Creates Porous Structures for High Cell Attachment and Proliferation.

Project description:Direct ink writing (DIW) is a customizable platform to engineer complex constructs from biobased colloids. However, the latter usually display strong interactions with water and lack interparticle connectivity, limiting one-step processing into hierarchically porous structures. We overcome such challenges by using low-solid emulgel inks stabilized by chitin nanofibrils (nanochitin, NCh). By using complementary characterization platforms, we reveal NCh structuring into spatially controlled three-dimensional (3D) materials that generate multiscale porosities defined by emulsion droplet size, ice templating, and DIW infill density. The extrusion variables, key in the development of surface and mechanical features of printed architectures, are comprehensively analyzed by using molecular dynamics and other simulation approaches. The obtained scaffolds are shown for their hierarchical porous structures, high areal density, and surface stiffness, which lead to excellent modulation of cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, as tested with mouse dermal fibroblast expressing green fluorescent proteins.

Microfabricated tuneable and transferable porous PDMS membranes for Organs-on-Chips.

Project description:We present a novel and highly reproducible process to fabricate transferable porous PDMS membranes for PDMS-based Organs-on-Chips (OOCs) using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) fabrication technologies. Porous PDMS membranes with pore sizes down to 2.0 ?m in diameter and a wide porosity range (2-65%) can be fabricated. To overcome issues normally faced when using replica moulding and extend the applicability to most OOCs and improve their scalability and reproducibility, the process includes a sacrificial layer to easily transfer the membranes from a silicon carrier to any PDMS-based OOC. The highly reliable fabrication and transfer method does not need of manual handling to define the pore features (size, distribution), allowing very thin (<10 ?m) functional membranes to be transferred at chip level with a high success rate (85%). The viability of cell culturing on the porous membranes was assessed by culturing two different cell types on transferred membranes in two different OOCs. Human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVEC) and MDA-MB-231 (MDA) cells were successfully cultured confirming the viability of cell culturing and the biocompatibility of the membranes. The results demonstrate the potential of controlling the porous membrane features to study cell mechanisms such as transmigrations, monolayer formation, and barrier function. The high control over the membrane characteristics might consequently allow to intentionally trigger or prevent certain cellular responses or mechanisms when studying human physiology and pathology using OOCs.

"Skin-like" fabric for personal moisture management.

Project description:Personal moisture management fabrics that facilitate sweat transport away from the skin are highly desirable for wearer's comfort and performance. Here, we demonstrate a "skin-like" directional liquid transport fabric, which enables continuous one-way liquid flow through spatially distributed channels acting like "sweating glands" yet repels external liquid contaminants. The water transmission rate can be 15 times greater than that of best commercial breathable fabrics. This exceptional property is achieved by creating gradient wettability channels across a predominantly superhydrophobic substrate. The flow directionality is explained by the Gibbs pinning criterion. The permeability, mechanical property, and abrasion resistance (up to 10,000 cycles) of the fabric were not affected by the treatment. In addition to functional clothing, this concept can be extended for developing materials for oil-water separation, wound dressing, geotechnical engineering, flexible microfluidics, and fuel cell membranes.
