The multi-photon induced Fano effect.

ABSTRACT: The ordinary Fano effect occurs in many-electron atoms and requires an autoionizing state. With such a state, photo-ionization may proceed via pathways that interfere, and the characteristic asymmetric resonance structures appear in the continuum. Here we demonstrate that Fano structure may also be induced without need of auto-ionization, by dressing the continuum with an ordinary bound state in any atom by a coupling laser. Using multi-photon processes gives complete, ultra-fast control over the interference. We show that a line-shape index q near unity (maximum asymmetry) may be produced in hydrogenic silicon donors with a relatively weak beam. Since the Fano lineshape has both constructive and destructive interference, the laser control opens the possibility of state-selective detection with enhancement on one side of resonance and invisibility on the other. We discuss a variety of atomic and molecular spectroscopies, and in the case of silicon donors we provide a calculation for a qubit readout application.

Multi-photon absorption limits to heralded single photon sources.

Project description:Single photons are of paramount importance to future quantum technologies, including quantum communication and computation. Nonlinear photonic devices using parametric processes offer a straightforward route to generating photons, however additional nonlinear processes may come into play and interfere with these sources. Here we analyse spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) sources in the presence of multi-photon processes. We conduct experiments in silicon and gallium indium phosphide photonic crystal waveguides which display inherently different nonlinear absorption processes, namely two-photon (TPA) and three-photon absorption (ThPA), respectively. We develop a novel model capturing these diverse effects which is in excellent quantitative agreement with measurements of brightness, coincidence-to-accidental ratio (CAR) and second-order correlation function g((2))(0), showing that TPA imposes an intrinsic limit on heralded single photon sources. We build on these observations to devise a new metric, the quantum utility (QMU), enabling further optimisation of single photon sources.

Stochastic Multi-Molecular Modeling Method of Organic-Modified Ceramics in Two-Photon Induced Photopolymerization.

Project description:Organic-modified ceramics (Ormocer) are an outstanding class of hybrid materials due to the fact of their various excellent properties, and they have been successfully used in two-photon polymerization microfabrication fields. A series of functional devices has been fabricated and widely used in aerospace, information science, biomedicine, and other fields. However, quantization of intermolecular energy during the fabrication process is still a difficult problem. A stochastic multi-molecular modeling method is proposed in this paper. The detailed molecular-interaction energies during the photon polymerization of Ormocer were obtained by molecular dynamics analysis. The established molecular model was verified by comparing the simulated shrinkage results with commercial calibrated ones. This work is expected to provide a reference for optimizing the fabrication of organically modified ceramics and reducing photoresist shrinkage in two-photon polymerization.

A multi-mode super-fano mechanism for enhanced third harmonic generation in silicon metasurfaces.

Project description:We present strong enhancement of third harmonic generation in an amorphous silicon metasurface consisting of elliptical nano resonators. We show that this enhancement originates from a new type of multi-mode Fano mechanism. These 'Super-Fano' resonances are investigated numerically in great detail using full-wave simulations. The theoretically predicted behavior of the metasurface is experimentally verified by linear and nonlinear transmission spectroscopy. Moreover, quantitative nonlinear measurements are performed, in which an absolute conversion efficiency as high as ηmax ≈ 2.8 × 10-7 a peak power intensity of 1.2 GW cm-2 is found. Compared to an unpatterned silicon film of the same thickness amplification factors of up to ~900 are demonstrated. Our results pave the way to exploiting a strong Fano-type multi-mode coupling in metasurfaces for high THG in potential applications.

Controlled multi-photon subtraction with cascaded Rydberg superatoms as single-photon absorbers.

Project description:The preparation of light pulses with well-defined quantum properties requires precise control at the individual photon level. Here, we demonstrate exact and controlled multi-photon subtraction from incoming light pulses. We employ a cascaded system of tightly confined cold atom ensembles with strong, collectively enhanced coupling of photons to Rydberg states. The excitation blockade resulting from interactions between Rydberg atoms limits photon absorption to one per ensemble and rapid dephasing of the collective excitation suppresses stimulated re-emission of the photon. We experimentally demonstrate subtraction with up to three absorbers. Furthermore, we present a thorough theoretical analysis of our scheme where we identify weak Raman decay of the long-lived Rydberg state as the main source of infidelity in the subtracted photon number and investigate the performance of the multi-photon subtractor for increasing absorber numbers in the presence of Raman decay.

Giant Multi-Photon Absorption by Heptazine Organometalation.

Project description:Multi-photon absorption (MPA) is of increasing interest for applications in technologically important "windows" of the electromagnetic spectrum (near-infrared III, NIR-III, 1550-1870 nm; and the new 2080-2340 nm region); however, few molecules exist that display strong MPA at these long wavelengths. We herein report the syntheses of the first 2,5,8-s-heptazine-cored organometallic complexes, together with organic analogues. The complexes exhibit outstanding 3PA cross-sections in the NIR-III and exceptional 4PA cross-sections in the new 2080-2340 nm window. We demonstrate that replacing organic donor groups by organometallic units results in an order of magnitude increase in 3PA, the "switching on" of 4PA, and a dramatic improvement in photo-stability. Our results highlight the impressive outcomes possible with an "organometalation" approach to NLO materials design.

Highly Efficient Processing of Multi-photon States.

Project description:How to implement multi-qubit gates is an important problem in quantum information processing. Based on cross phase modulation, we present an approach to realizing a family of multi-qubit gates that deterministically operate on single photons as the qubits. A general n-qubit unitary operation is a typical example of these gates. The approach greatly relax the requirement on the resources, such as the ancilla photons and coherent beams, as well as the number of operations on the qubits. The improvement in this framework may facilitate large scale quantum information processing.

Symmetry-breaking induced magnetic Fano resonances in densely packed arrays of symmetric nanotrimers.

Project description:Due to unique properties and great design flexibilities, Fano resonances represent one of the most promising optical features mediated by metallic nanostructures, while the excitation of some Fano modes is impossible due to symmetry reasons. The aim of this work is to show that dense lattice arrangements can have a profound impact on the optical properties of nanostructures and, in particular, can enable the excitation of otherwise dark modes. Here, we demonstrate this concept using the example of rectangular arrays of symmetric trimers packed so densely that the coupling between neighbouring unit cells imposes a symmetry break, enabling the excitation of magnetic Fano resonances. We found that in experiments as well as in simulations, electric and magnetic Fano resonances can be simultaneously formed in cases where the inter-trimer distances are sufficiently small. By analysing the transition from an isolated trimer mode into a regime of strong near-field coupling, we show that by modifying the rectangular unit cell lengths due to the symmetry mismatch between lattice and trimer, two types of Fano resonances can be found, especially magnetic Fano resonances with loop-type magnetic field distributions within the centre of each trimer, which can be either enhanced or suppressed. In addition, the influence of the refractive index environment was measured, showing sensitivity values of approximately 300 nm/RIU. Our work provides fundamental insights into the interaction of the lattice and nanostructure response and paves the way towards the observation of novel optical excitations.

Enhancement of the thermoelectric properties in bilayer graphene structures induced by Fano resonances.

Project description:Fano resonances of bilayer graphene could be attractive for thermoelectric devices. The special profile presented by such resonances could significantly enhance the thermoelectric properties. In this work, we study the thermoelectric properties of bilayer graphene single and double barrier structures. The barrier structures are typically supported by a substrate and encapsulated by protecting layers, reducing considerably the phonon thermal transport. So, we will focus on the electronic contribution to the thermal transport. The charge carriers are described as massive chiral particles through an effective Dirac-like Hamiltonian. The Hybrid matrix method and the Landauer-Büttiker formalism are implemented to obtain the transmission, transport and thermoelectric properties. The temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient, the power factor, the figure of merit and the efficiency is analyzed for gapless single and double barriers. We find that the charge neutrality point and the system resonances shape the thermoelectric response. In the case of single barriers, the low-temperature thermoelectric response is dominated by the charge neutrality point, while the high-temperature response is determined by the Fano resonances. In the case of double barriers, Breit-Wigner resonances dominate the thermoelectric properties at low temperatures, while Fano and hybrid resonances become preponderant as the temperature rises. The values for the figure of merit are close to two for single barriers and above three for double barriers. The system resonances also allows us to optimize the output power and the efficiency at low and high temperatures. By computing the density of states, we also corroborate that the improvement of the thermoelectric properties is related to the accumulation of electron states. Our findings indicate that bilayer graphene barrier structures can be used to improve the response of thermoelectric devices.

Multi-photon attenuation-compensated light-sheet fluorescence microscopy.

Project description:Attenuation of optical fields owing to scattering and absorption limits the penetration depth for imaging. Whilst aberration correction may be used, this is difficult to implement over a large field-of-view in heterogeneous tissue. Attenuation-compensation allows tailoring of the maximum lobe of a propagation-invariant light field and promises an increase in depth penetration for imaging. Here we show this promising approach may be implemented in multi-photon (two-photon) light-sheet fluorescence microscopy and, furthermore, can be achieved in a facile manner utilizing a graded neutral density filter, circumventing the need for complex beam shaping apparatus. A "gold standard" system utilizing a spatial light modulator for beam shaping is used to benchmark our implementation. The approach will open up enhanced depth penetration in light-sheet imaging to a wide range of end users.

Light and matter co-confined multi-photon lithography.

Project description:Mask-free multi-photon lithography enables the fabrication of arbitrary nanostructures low cost and more accessible than conventional lithography. A major challenge for multi-photon lithography is to achieve ultra-high precision and desirable lateral resolution due to the inevitable optical diffraction barrier and proximity effect. Here, we show a strategy, light and matter co-confined multi-photon lithography, to overcome the issues via combining photo-inhibition and chemical quenchers. We deeply explore the quenching mechanism and photoinhibition mechanism for light and matter co-confined multiphoton lithography. Besides, mathematical modeling helps us better understand that the synergy of quencher and photo-inhibition can gain a narrowest distribution of free radicals. By using light and matter co-confined multiphoton lithography, we gain a 30 nm critical dimension and 100 nm lateral resolution, which further decrease the gap with conventional lithography.
