A new regression model for bounded response variable: An alternative to the beta and unit-Lindley regression models.

ABSTRACT: A new distribution defined on (0,1) interval is introduced. Its probability density and cumulative distribution functions have simple forms. Thanks to its simple forms, the moments, incomplete moments and quantile function of the proposed distribution are derived and obtained in explicit forms. Four parameter estimation methods are used to estimate the unknown parameter of the distribution. Besides, simulation study is implemented to compare the efficiencies of these parameter estimation methods. More importantly, owing to the proposed distribution, we provide an alternative regression model for the bounded response variable. The proposed regression model is compared with the beta and unit-Lindley regression models based on two real data sets.

Unraveling water monitoring association towards weather attributes for response proportions data: A unit-Lindley learning.

Project description:Learning techniques involve unraveling regression structures, which aim to analyze in a probabilistic frame the associations across variables of interest. Thus, analyzing fraction and/or proportion data may not be adequate with standard regression procedures, since the linear regression models generally assume that the dependent (outcome) variable is normally distributed. In this manner, we propose a statistical model called unit-Lindley regression model, for the purpose of Statistical Process Control (SPC). As a result, a new control chart tool was proposed, which targets the water monitoring dynamic, as well as the monitoring of relative humidity, per minute, of Copiapó city, located in Atacama Desert (one of the driest non-polar places on Earth), north of Chile. Our results show that variables such as wind speed, 24-hour temperature variation, and solar radiation are useful to describe the amount of relative humidity in the air. Additionally, Information Visualization (InfoVis) tools help to understand the time seasonality of the water particle phenomenon of the region in near real-time analysis. The developed methodology also helps to label unusual events, such as Camanchaca, and other water monitoring-related events.

VARIABLE SELECTION FOR REGRESSION MODELS WITH MISSING DATA.

Project description:We consider the variable selection problem for a class of statistical models with missing data, including missing covariate and/or response data. We investigate the smoothly clipped absolute deviation penalty (SCAD) and adaptive LASSO and propose a unified model selection and estimation procedure for use in the presence of missing data. We develop a computationally attractive algorithm for simultaneously optimizing the penalized likelihood function and estimating the penalty parameters. Particularly, we propose to use a model selection criterion, called the IC(Q) statistic, for selecting the penalty parameters. We show that the variable selection procedure based on IC(Q) automatically and consistently selects the important covariates and leads to efficient estimates with oracle properties. The methodology is very general and can be applied to numerous situations involving missing data, from covariates missing at random in arbitrary regression models to nonignorably missing longitudinal responses and/or covariates. Simulations are given to demonstrate the methodology and examine the finite sample performance of the variable selection procedures. Melanoma data from a cancer clinical trial is presented to illustrate the proposed methodology.

Bayesian Variable Selection for Gaussian copula regression models.

Project description:We develop a novel Bayesian method to select important predictors in regression models with multiple responses of diverse types. A sparse Gaussian copula regression model is used to account for the multivariate dependencies between any combination of discrete and/or continuous responses and their association with a set of predictors. We utilize the parameter expansion for data augmentation strategy to construct a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for the estimation of the parameters and the latent variables of the model. Based on a centered parametrization of the Gaussian latent variables, we design a fixed-dimensional proposal distribution to update jointly the latent binary vectors of important predictors and the corresponding non-zero regression coefficients. For Gaussian responses and for outcomes that can be modeled as a dependent version of a Gaussian response, this proposal leads to a Metropolis-Hastings step that allows an efficient exploration of the predictors' model space. The proposed strategy is tested on simulated data and applied to real data sets in which the responses consist of low-intensity counts, binary, ordinal and continuous variables.

Ensemble estimation and variable selection with semiparametric regression models.

Project description:We consider scenarios in which the likelihood function for a semiparametric regression model factors into separate components, with an efficient estimator of the regression parameter available for each component. An optimal weighted combination of the component estimators, named an ensemble estimator, may be employed as an overall estimate of the regression parameter, and may be fully efficient under uncorrelatedness conditions. This approach is useful when the full likelihood function may be difficult to maximize, but the components are easy to maximize. It covers settings where the nuisance parameter may be estimated at different rates in the component likelihoods. As a motivating example we consider proportional hazards regression with prospective doubly censored data, in which the likelihood factors into a current status data likelihood and a left-truncated right-censored data likelihood. Variable selection is important in such regression modelling, but the applicability of existing techniques is unclear in the ensemble approach. We propose ensemble variable selection using the least squares approximation technique on the unpenalized ensemble estimator, followed by ensemble re-estimation under the selected model. The resulting estimator has the oracle property such that the set of nonzero parameters is successfully recovered and the semiparametric efficiency bound is achieved for this parameter set. Simulations show that the proposed method performs well relative to alternative approaches. Analysis of an AIDS cohort study illustrates the practical utility of the method.

Study of Bayesian variable selection method on mixed linear regression models.

Project description:Variable selection has always been an important issue in statistics. When a linear regression model is used to fit data, selecting appropriate explanatory variables that strongly impact the response variables has a significant effect on the model prediction accuracy and interpretation effect. redThis study introduces the Bayesian adaptive group Lasso method to solve the variable selection problem under a mixed linear regression model with a hidden state and explanatory variables with a grouping structure. First, the definition of the implicit state mixed linear regression model is presented. Thereafter, the Bayesian adaptive group Lasso method is used to determine the penalty function and parameters, after which each parameter's specific form of the fully conditional posterior distribution is calculated. Moreover, the Gibbs algorithm design is outlined. Simulation experiments are conducted to compare the variable selection and parameter estimation effects in different states. Finally, a dataset of Alzheimer's Disease is used for application analysis. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can identify the observation from different hidden states, but the results of the variable selection in different states are obviously different.

Variable selection using a smooth information criterion for distributional regression models.

Project description:Modern variable selection procedures make use of penalization methods to execute simultaneous model selection and estimation. A popular method is the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, the use of which requires selecting the value of a tuning parameter. This parameter is typically tuned by minimizing the cross-validation error or Bayesian information criterion, but this can be computationally intensive as it involves fitting an array of different models and selecting the best one. In contrast with this standard approach, we have developed a procedure based on the so-called "smooth IC" (SIC) in which the tuning parameter is automatically selected in one step. We also extend this model selection procedure to the distributional regression framework, which is more flexible than classical regression modelling. Distributional regression, also known as multiparameter regression, introduces flexibility by taking account of the effect of covariates through multiple distributional parameters simultaneously, e.g., mean and variance. These models are useful in the context of normal linear regression when the process under study exhibits heteroscedastic behaviour. Reformulating the distributional regression estimation problem in terms of penalized likelihood enables us to take advantage of the close relationship between model selection criteria and penalization. Augmented Beta rectangular regression models: A Bayesian perspective.

Project description:Mixed effects Beta regression models based on Beta distributions have been widely used to analyze longitudinal percentage or proportional data ranging between zero and one. However, Beta distributions are not flexible to extreme outliers or excessive events around tail areas, and they do not account for the presence of the boundary values zeros and ones because these values are not in the support of the Beta distributions. To address these issues, we propose a mixed effects model using Beta rectangular distribution and augment it with the probabilities of zero and one. We conduct extensive simulation studies to assess the performance of mixed effects models based on both the Beta and Beta rectangular distributions under various scenarios. The simulation studies suggest that the regression models based on Beta rectangular distributions improve the accuracy of parameter estimates in the presence of outliers and heavy tails. The proposed models are applied to the motivating Neuroprotection Exploratory Trials in Parkinson's Disease (PD) Long-term Study-1 (LS-1 study, n = 1741), developed by The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Exploratory Trials in Parkinson's Disease (NINDS NET-PD) network.

Robust latent-variable interpretation of in vivo regression models by nested resampling.

Project description:Simple multilinear methods, such as partial least squares regression (PLSR), are effective at interrelating dynamic, multivariate datasets of cell-molecular biology through high-dimensional arrays. However, data collected in vivo are more difficult, because animal-to-animal variability is often high, and each time-point measured is usually a terminal endpoint for that animal. Observations are further complicated by the nesting of cells within tissues or tissue sections, which themselves are nested within animals. Here, we introduce principled resampling strategies that preserve the tissue-animal hierarchy of individual replicates and compute the uncertainty of multidimensional decompositions applied to global averages. Using molecular-phenotypic data from the mouse aorta and colon, we find that interpretation of decomposed latent variables (LVs) changes when PLSR models are resampled. Lagging LVs, which statistically improve global-average models, are unstable in resampled iterations that preserve nesting relationships, arguing that these LVs should not be mined for biological insight. Interestingly, resampling is less discriminatory for multidimensional regressions of in vitro data, where replicate-to-replicate variance is sufficiently low. Our work illustrates the challenges and opportunities in translating systems-biology approaches from cultured cells to living organisms. Nested resampling adds a straightforward quality-control step for interpreting the robustness of in vivo regression models.

Robust Variable and Interaction Selection for Logistic Regression and General Index Models.

Project description:Under the logistic regression framework, we propose a forward-backward method, SODA, for variable selection with both main and quadratic interaction terms. In the forward stage, SODA adds in predictors that have significant overall effects, whereas in the backward stage SODA removes unimportant terms to optimize the extended Bayesian Information Criterion (EBIC). Compared with existing methods for variable selection in quadratic discriminant analysis, SODA can deal with high-dimensional data in which the number of predictors is much larger than the sample size and does not require the joint normality assumption on predictors, leading to much enhanced robustness. We further extend SODA to conduct variable selection and model fitting for general index models. Compared with existing variable selection methods based on the Sliced Inverse Regression (SIR) (Li, 1991), SODA requires neither linearity nor constant variance condition and is thus more robust. Our theoretical analysis establishes the variable-selection consistency of SODA under high-dimensional settings, and our simulation studies as well as real-data applications demonstrate superior performances of SODA in dealing with non-Gaussian design matrices in both logistic and general index models.
