Hyponatremia is a frequent, yet often unrecognized result of water intoxication caused by psychogenic polydipsia in patients with psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and anorexia nervosa. The consequences of hyponatremia may include cerebral edema with tonic-clonic seizures and, in extreme cases, death.
