Project description:In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Schizoneuraphis gallarum was sequenced and annotated. The mitogenome is 14,990 bp in length with an A + T content of 82.6%, including 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes and a control region. This is the shortest aphid mitogenome reported so far. All the protein-coding genes are initiated with ATN codon and terminated with TAA codon except cox1 and nad4 which are terminated with T. All the transfer RNA genes can form the typical clover-leaf secondary structure except trnS (AGN). The maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree based on mitogenome sequences of 25 aphid species shows that S. gallarum is sister to Hormaphis betulae.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Cochylimorpha cultana (Lederer) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was 15,348 bps in size, and comprised 37 genes, which were 13 PCGs, 22 tRNA genes and two rRNA genes. Most PCGs used the conventional ATN start codon, except for cox1 initiating with CGA. Four genes (cox1, cox2, nad4 and nad5) used single T residue as stop condon. 21 out of 22 tRNAs are folded into the cloverleaf secondary structure, except for trnS1. The phylogenetic analysis based on maximum-likelihood (ML) method revealed that the evolutionary status of C. cultana in Tortricinae at the molecular level, which agrees well with the classical taxonomy.

Project description:This study reports the first complete mitochondrial genome of Antheraea pernyi Guérin-Méneville 1855 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) strain Dingzhou_1, a silkworm resource serving silk production in North Korea. The mitochondrial genome is circular with 15,573 bp in length encoding 37 typical mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes). The 553-bp A + T-rich region harbors a repeat region composed of 6 ∼ 38 bp tandem repeat units, as found in other known inbred strains from Chinese populations. The phylogenetic analysis clustered Dingzhou_1 from North Korea together with Chinese Liaoning population, suggesting that oak silkworm in North Korea might be introduced from her neighbor China Liaoning.

Project description:The high-throughput sequencing method was used for the first time to determined complete mitochondrial genome of Orgyia postica. The complete mitochondrial genome was a circular molecule with 15,258 bp in full-length, including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs) and 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs). The nucleotide composition of O. postica mitogenome was A: 37.6%, C: 7.9%, G: 14.8%, T: 39.7%. In addition, the results of the phylogenetic analysis indicate that O. postica had the closest relationship with Laelia suffusa. Our study will contribute to further research on the evolution of Lymantriidae and the identification of larva species.

Project description:Magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has recently emerged as one of the most promising areas in condensed matter research, with many exciting emerging properties and significant potential for applications ranging from topological magnonics to low-power spintronics, quantum computing, and optical communications. In the brief time after their discovery, 2D magnets have blossomed into a rich area for investigation, where fundamental concepts in magnetism are challenged by the behavior of spins that can develop at the single layer limit. However, much effort is still needed in multiple fronts before 2D magnets can be routinely used for practical implementations. In this comprehensive review, prominent authors with expertise in complementary fields of 2D magnetism (i.e., synthesis, device engineering, magneto-optics, imaging, transport, mechanics, spin excitations, and theory and simulations) have joined together to provide a genome of current knowledge and a guideline for future developments in 2D magnetic materials research.

Project description:The electrical phase transition in van der Waals (vdW) layered materials such as transition-metal dichalcogenides and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212) high-temperature superconductor has been explored using various techniques, including scanning tunneling and photoemission spectroscopies, and measurements of electrical resistance as a function of temperature. In this study, we develop one useful method to elucidate the electrical phases in vdW layered materials: indium (In)-contacted vdW tunneling spectroscopy for 1T-TaS2, Bi-2212 and 2H-MoS2. We utilized the vdW gap formed at an In/vdW material interface as a tunnel barrier for tunneling spectroscopy. For strongly correlated electron systems such as 1T-TaS2 and Bi-2212, pronounced gap features corresponding to the Mott and superconducting gaps were respectively observed at T = 4 K. We observed a gate dependence of the amplitude of the superconducting gap, which has potential applications in a gate-tunable superconducting device with a SiO2/Si substrate. For In/10 nm-thick 2H-MoS2 devices, differential conductance shoulders at bias voltages of approximately ± 0.45 V were observed, which were attributed to the semiconducting gap. These results show that In-contacted vdW gap tunneling spectroscopy in a fashion of field-effect transistor provides feasible and reliable ways to investigate electronic structures of vdW materials.

Project description:In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Sinularia humilis van Ofwegen, 2008 was determined using next-generation sequencing (NGS) method. The mitogenome of S. humilis is 18,743 bp in length, containing 14 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNA) and one tRNA (tRNA-Met), which has same gene order with other species of Sinularia. ATG was determined as start codon in all 14 PCGs. Eight TAG, five TAA, and one incomplete codons (T-) were found as stop codon. Phylogenetic analysis of the small number of available mitogenomes showed that S. humilis is closely related to Sinularia ceramensis and Sinularia peculiaris.

Project description:Supercurrent flow between two superconductors with different order parameters, a phenomenon known as the Josephson effect, can be achieved by inserting a non-superconducting material between two superconductors to decouple their wavefunctions. These Josephson junctions have been employed in fields ranging from digital to quantum electronics, yet their functionality is limited by the interface quality and use of non-superconducting material. Here we show that by exfoliating a layered dichalcogenide (NbSe2) superconductor, the van der Waals (vdW) contact between the cleaved surfaces can instead be used to construct a Josephson junction. This is made possible by recent advances in vdW heterostructure technology, with an atomically flat vdW interface free of oxidation and inter-diffusion achieved by eliminating all heat treatment during junction preparation. Here we demonstrate that this artificially created vdW interface provides sufficient decoupling of the wavefunctions of the two NbSe2 crystals, with the vdW Josephson junction exhibiting a high supercurrent transparency.

Project description:Stylommatophora is one of the most speciose orders of Gastropoda, including terrestrial snails and slugs, some of which are economically important as human food, agricultural pests, vectors of parasites or due to invasiveness. Despite their great diversity and relevance, the internal phylogeny of Stylommatophora has been debated. To date, only 34 stylommatophoran mitogenomes were sequenced. Here, the complete mitogenome of an invasive pest slug, Arion vulgaris Moquin-Tandon, 1855 (Stylommatophora: Arionidae), was sequenced using next generation sequencing, analysed and compared with other stylommatophorans. The mitogenome of A. vulgaris measures 14,547 bp and contains 13 protein-coding, two rRNA, 22 tRNA genes, and one control region, with an A + T content of 70.20%. All protein coding genes (PCGs) are initiated with ATN codons except for COX1, ND5 and ATP8 and all are ended with TAR or T-stop codons. All tRNAs were folded into a clover-leaf secondary structure except for trnC and trnS1 (AGN). Phylogenetic analyses confirmed the position of A. vulgaris within the superfamily Arionoidea, recovered a sister group relationship between Arionoidea and Orthalicoidea, and supported monophyly of all currently recognized superfamilies within Stylommatophora except for the superfamily Helicoidea. Initial diversification time of the Stylommatophora was estimated as 138.55 million years ago corresponding to Early Cretaceous. The divergence time of A. vulgaris and Arion rufus (Linnaeus, 1758) was estimated as 15.24 million years ago corresponding to one of Earth's most recent, global warming events, the Mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum. Furthermore, selection analyses were performed to investigate the role of different selective forces shaping stylommatophoran mitogenomes. Although purifying selection is the predominant selective force shaping stylommatophoran mitogenomes, six genes (ATP8, COX1, COX3, ND3, ND4 and ND6) detected by the branch-specific aBSREL approach and three genes (ATP8, CYTB and ND4L) detected by codon-based BEB, FUBAR and MEME approaches were exposed to diversifying selection. The positively selected substitutions at the mitochondrial PCGs of stylommatophoran species seems to be adaptive to environmental conditions and affecting mitochondrial ATP production or protection from reactive oxygen species effects. Comparative analysis of stylommatophoran mitogenome rearrangements using MLGO revealed conservatism in Stylommatophora; exceptions refer to potential apomorphies for several clades including rearranged orders of trnW-trnY and of trnE-trnQ-rrnS-trnM-trnL2-ATP8-trnN-ATP6-trnR clusters for the genus Arion. Generally, tRNA genes tend to be rearranged and tandem duplication random loss, transitions and inversions are the most basic mechanisms shaping stylommatophoran mitogenomes.

Project description:The Boltzmann distribution of electrons sets a fundamental barrier to lowering energy consumption in metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Negative capacitance FET (NC-FET), as an emerging FET architecture, is promising to overcome this thermionic limit and build ultra-low-power consuming electronics. Here, we demonstrate steep-slope NC-FETs based on two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide and CuInP2S6 (CIPS) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure. The vdW NC-FET provides an average subthreshold swing (SS) less than the Boltzmann's limit for over seven decades of drain current, with a minimum SS of 28 mV dec-1. Negligible hysteresis is achieved in NC-FETs with the thickness of CIPS less than 20 nm. A voltage gain of 24 is measured for vdW NC-FET logic inverter. Flexible vdW NC-FET is further demonstrated with sub-60 mV dec-1 switching characteristics under the bending radius down to 3.8 mm. These results demonstrate the great potential of vdW NC-FET for ultra-low-power and flexible applications.
