Glaucoma Awareness and Knowledge Among Ethiopians in a Tertiary Eye Care Center.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

Glaucoma outcomes are closely associated with patients' awareness of the disease. However, little is known about glaucoma awareness and knowledge in Addis Ababa, a densely populated and ethnolinguistically diverse capital city in Ethiopia, the second largest country in Africa.

Methods

We performed a cross-sectional survey in the ophthalmology waiting room at St. Paul's Hospital, a tertiary care center in Addis Ababa. Respondents included patients, patient family members, and non-clinical staff. Participants were asked if they had read or heard about glaucoma to gauge basic awareness of the disease; those with awareness were asked to take a quiz to measure their objective glaucoma knowledge. We performed multivariable regression to identify factors associated with glaucoma awareness, quiz performance, and self-rated ability to use eye drops.

Results

Of 298 respondents, 145 (48.7%) were female, and the average age was 44.9?±?17.2 years. A majority (167; 56.0%) had primary school or less than primary school education. Only 131 (44.0%) had basic glaucoma awareness. Of these, 95 (72.5%) knew that glaucoma causes permanent vision loss, 103 (78.6%) knew glaucoma is often asymptomatic in early stages, 62 (47.3%) identified elevated intraocular pressure as a glaucoma risk factor, and 124 (94.7%) knew glaucoma was treatable. A majority of this subset (126; 96.2%) said they would be willing to use medicated eye drops, and 130 (99.2%) indicated a willingness to undergo surgery if recommended. Education level was independently associated with glaucoma awareness (p?ConclusionIn a population sample from an ophthalmology waiting room in Addis Ababa, glaucoma awareness was poor and most strongly associated with education level. Educational interventions at public health and provider-patient levels are warranted. Our results suggest high receptiveness to both medical and surgical treatment.

Project description:IntroductionHypertension is one of the common non-communicable diseases and public health problem among developed and developing countries. The lack of knowledge and awareness on hypertension and poor adherence of medication are a major challenge to control hypertension and prevent its complications. Our study aimed to assess the knowledge, awareness of hypertension and adherence to medication among hypertensive patients attending the medical clinics of a tertiary care center, Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among hypertensive patients to assess knowledge, awareness of hypertension and adherence to medication in medical clinics in a tertiary care for 6 months duration. Data were collected by using pretested and validated Hypertension Facts Questionnaire. Their medication adherence and the reasons for nonadherence were studied using Medication Adherence Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 18) analytical package and the chi-square test was performed. The scoring system was used to categorize the level of knowledge and awareness of hypertension among patients.ResultsThe majority of patients had moderate-to-high knowledge (101, 65.8%) about hypertension and had moderate-to-high awareness (111, 73.2%) on hypertension. Even though, 134 (87.6%) patients knew that they have hypertension, and 108 (70.6%) patients did not know their blood pressure value at the time of diagnosis. Most of the patients (90, 58.8%) had good drug adherence, and most of them (141, 92.1%) thought that taking medicine plays a key role to control their blood pressure. The main reasons for nonadherence of medication were forgetfulness (39, 32%) and expenses (46, 35.4%). The knowledge and awareness about hypertension among respondents were significantly associated with educational level (p < 0.05).ConclusionMost of the patients had adequate knowledge on the risk factors and complications of hypertension. But they were unaware about their disease status, and their diagnosis, target organ damage and recent blood pressure values. The drug adherence was reasonably adequate. The main reasons for nonadherence of medication were forgetfulness and expenses.

Project description:BackgroundThe use of medical radiation in diagnosis and procedural and surgical treatment is increasing. Therefore, healthcare personnel should be adequately aware and knowledgeable about radiation hazards to protect themselves and their patients from its adverse effects. The objective of this study was to examine awareness about radiation hazards and knowledge about protection methods among the anesthesia personnel and surgical subspecialists of a quaternary care academic center.MethodsA validated questionnaire was completed by anesthetic personnel and surgical subspecialists. It consisted of questions that required demographic information and assessed awareness about radiation hazards. In addition, 15 multiple-choice questions assessed knowledge about radiation across the following domains: the main principle of radiation protection, personal annual radiation dose, personal protection equipment, safe distance from an X-ray machine, and susceptible organs.ResultsA total of 270 potential participants were emailed and invited to respond to an online questionnaire, and the response rate was 79.3%. Of the 214 participants, 69.2% were women; the mean age of the sample was 34.8 years. Most of the participants (63.1%) considered radiation exposure that occurs as a part of daily work to be very harmful; 86.4% and 78.5% reported that they always wore a lead apron and a thyroid shield when working in an environment that entails radiation exposure, respectively. The mean score for knowledge about radiation hazards and protection was 6.4 ± 2.0 (maximum possible score = 15) Therefore, there is a need to improve anesthetic personnel and surgical subspecialists' knowledge about radiation protection, especially with regard to the use of lead goggles and harmful doses of radiation.ConclusionThe present findings suggest that there is a reasonable level of awareness but a relative lack of knowledge about radiation hazards and protection among anesthesia personnel and surgical subspecialists. Therefore, continuing medical education on radiation hazards and protection must be mandated.
