Project description:OBJECTIVE:Cross-sectional studies suggest an association between weight cycling and psychological status. Although this is often interpreted as suggesting that weight cycles "cause" psychological distress, the relationship could be bidirectional. This study provides a prospective analysis of the bidirectional association between weight variability and psychological status over an 8-year period in overweight/obese adults with Type 2 diabetes. METHOD:Data were from the first 8 years of Look AHEAD, a randomized controlled trial comparing health outcomes in individuals with Type 2 diabetes assigned to an intensive lifestyle intervention designed to produce weight loss or a diabetes education and support control group. Psychological status (mental health, depressive symptoms, binge eating) was assessed via surveys and were examined in relation to weight variability at both baseline and year 8. Weight variability was derived from 8 possible annual measurements from participants who had a minimum of 3 consecutive body weight measurements (N = 4,774) and operationalized as the number of year-to-year cycles and the coefficient of variation across all available weight measurements. RESULTS:Controlling for study group, higher baseline scores on mental health (Short Form-36 Mental Component Summary) and lower levels of depressive symptomatology (Beck Depression Inventory) and binge eating (Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns) were associated with significantly less subsequent weight variability. The prospective association between weight variability and psychological status at year 8 was less robust. CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest that the cross-sectional relationship between weight variability and psychological status is due primarily to poorer psychological function preceding greater weight instability. Project description:ObjectiveTo examine whether the adverse effect of obesity on psychological well-being can be explained by weight discrimination.MethodsThe study sample included 5056 older (≥50 y) men and women living in England and participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Participants reported experiences of weight discrimination in everyday life and completed measures of quality of life (CASP-19 scale), life satisfaction (Satisfaction With Life Scale), and depressive symptoms (eight-item CES-D scale). Height and weight were objectively measured, with obesity defined as BMI ≥30 kg/m2 . Mediation analyses were used to test the role of perceived weight discrimination in the relationship between obesity and each psychological factor.ResultsObesity, weight discrimination, and psychological well-being were all significantly inter-related. Mediation models revealed significant indirect effects of obesity through perceived weight discrimination on quality of life (β = -0.072, SE = 0.008), life satisfaction (β = -0.038, SE = 0.008), and depressive symptoms (β = 0.057, SE = 0.008), with perceived weight discrimination explaining approximately 40% (range: 39.5-44.1%) of the total association between obesity and psychological well-being.ConclusionsPerceived weight discrimination explains a substantial proportion of the association between obesity and psychological well-being in English older adults. Efforts to reduce weight stigma in society could help to reduce the psychological burden of obesity.

Project description:Research highlights notable concerns about adolescents' psychological functioning during the COVID-19 pandemic, pointing to its association with overall adjustment. Identifying adolescent profiles based on psychological distress risk levels is crucial for developing effective support strategies. This study, conducted with N = 579 adolescents (Mage = 15.97, SD = 1.52), employed a person-centred approach, using the latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify distinct psychological functioning profiles during the pandemic. Three profiles emerged, including low-risk, mild-risk, and high-risk subgroups, characterised by varying configurations of psychological functioning. The high-risk subgroup (19.5% of participants) exhibited elevated levels of mental health problems, loneliness, fear of COVID-19, stress, and negative affect, alongside lower positivity and positive affect. The mild-risk subgroup (46.8%) demonstrated intermediate scores in the study variables, while the low-risk subgroup (33.7%) showed the most positive psychological functioning. Differences in perceived social support and lifestyle behaviours were explored among these subgroups. Results showed that the high-risk subgroup reported lower social support and greater sleep problems, smartphone addiction, and daytime spent on smartphones than the other subgroups. The study underscores the importance of considering the varying risk levels related to adolescents' psychological functioning during emergencies and tailoring interventions to support diverse psychological profiles.

Project description:Extant research has investigated the relationship between body weight and suicidality because obesity is highly stigmatized, leading to social marginalization and discrimination, yet has produced mixed results. Scholars have speculated that factors associated with body weight, such as weight discrimination, may better predict suicidality than body weight itself. We consider this possibility among a sample of 12,057 adult participants ages 33 to 43 in Wave V of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health through investigation of the relationships between weight discrimination and two dimensions of suicidality-suicide ideation and attempts. We also examine gender as a moderator of these relationships. We find that weight discrimination is positively associated with both suicide ideation and attempts, and this relationship is similar among men and women. Our findings underscore the need to address issues of weight discrimination in our society to better promote mental well-being.

Project description:Aims: To determine (1) whether having a visible eye condition and/or treatment with glasses and/or occlusion in childhood has any impact on psychological and/or social outcomes during childhood and young adulthood and (2) whether there is an effect of age at treatment. Methods: A cohort of 160 participants was asked to take part in an online study. The cohort had previously taken part in a research study at Royal Preston Hospital from 1999–2006 when they were 3–8 years old (Buckley and Perkins 2010). Participants were divided into treatment and no-defect (control) groups and were invited to take part in the current study when they had reached age 18–21. Thirty-five (35) participants (22.5% of the total cohort) were recruited and completed a series of online questionnaires assessing recalled victimisation at school, current generalised anxiety, current depressive symptoms, current loneliness, current friendship quality, and adjustment to university/work. Questionnaire scores between treated patients and controls were compared. Results: Findings showed that young adults who received treatment during their pre-school years, compared to their peers who did not need treatment, reported higher current generalised anxiety and more victimisation when in school. Those who received treatment in reception class were no different on psycho-social functioning compared to their peers; with both groups reporting higher victimisation than average compared to previous studies, and mild rates of anxiety. Conclusions: It appears that having a visible eye condition or treatment with glasses and/or occlusion commencing at pre-school has long term psychological implications, with scores on victimisation and current anxiety levels being higher for the pre-school treatment group compared to the pre-school no defect (control) group. Treatment plans and advice to parents should consider psycho-social outcomes of proposed treatment.

Project description:Widowed parents play a critical role in promoting family adaptation and facilitating their children's adjustment to the loss of a parent; yet the psychological wellbeing of these parents has received scant attention. In this study we examined depressive symptoms and grief intensity in 252 spousally bereaved men with dependent-age children. Participants learned of the study and completed initial surveys at variable time points during their first 2 years of bereavement. Depressive and grief symptoms remained persistently high, with 45% of the sample exceeding screening thresholds for clinically significant depressive symptoms two years after the death of their spouses. In linear regression models, higher intensity or frequency of depression and grief symptoms were associated with poorer psychological adaptation, lower parenting self-efficacy, and lower parenting satisfaction scores. Relationships between fathers' distress and potentially modifiable end-of-life variables regarding their spouses were examined. Notably, those who reported that their wives were at peace with dying had lower depressive and grief scores at various intervals. Overall, the magnitude and duration of the depressive and grief symptoms suggests that widowed fathers' psychological distress does not quickly abate over the first 2 years of bereavement, which may be attributable to the unique set of bereavement challenges facing widowed parents such as facilitating their children's grief, assuming sole parenting responsibilities, and managing a household on their own. The findings underscore the need to further examine emotional distress in widowed parents and how their wellbeing impacts family functioning. Project description:This study aimed to test whether (a) discrimination is associated with past 30-day/current alcohol, cigarette, e-cigarette, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use among Black and White U.S. adults aged 18-28, (b) psychological distress (PD) and positive well-being (PW) are mediators of the discrimination-substance use relationships, and (c) the associations are moderated by race and sex. Using data from a 2017 U.S. nationally representative survey we conducted multiple-group moderated mediation analyses among 2,192 young adults aged 18-28 (508 Black males, 594 Black females, 533 White males, 557 White females). Black males had higher discrimination, Whites had higher PW, and females had higher PD scores. Discrimination was positively associated with PD and negatively associated with PW. Among all groups, discrimination was positively associated with other illicit drug (direct and indirect), and marijuana use through PD. Indirect effects were stronger among White males for other illicit drugs and Black males for marijuana. The indirect effect of discrimination and alcohol use through PW was positive for Black females and negative for all other groups examined. Among Black males only, discrimination was positively associated with cigarette and alcohol use through PD (positive) and cigarette smoking through PW (negative). This study highlights the negative influence of perceived discrimination on current licit and illicit substance use among Black and White young adults. Our results suggest that this relationship may be partially mediated by PD and PW, especially among Black male young adults. Future discrimination and substance use studies should consider potential mediation effects of poor mental health and differences by race and sex. Project description:Stigma and recurrent discriminatory experiences can lead to distress and internalization of biases. Self-compassion is a widely-recognized resilience factor that may decrease the impact of discrimination on psychological well-being. Research highlights the potential utility of self-compassion in counteracting the harmful effects of discrimination, reducing psychological distress, and preventing the development of eating disorders. The current study examined the roles of self-compassion and psychological distress in perceived discrimination, internalized weight bias, body image, and eating pathology. Participants (N=694) living in the United States completed an online battery of measures assessing perceived discrimination, weight bias internalization, self-compassion, psychological distress, body appreciation, and eating pathology. Self-compassion was associated negatively with perceived discrimination, weight-bias internalization, psychological distress, and eating pathology and was associated positively with body appreciation. Moderated mediation analyses examined whether psychological distress statistically mediated the relationship between perceived discrimination (Model 1) or weight bias internalization (Model 2) on body appreciation, as well as between perceived discrimination (Model 3) or weight bias internalization (Model 4) on eating psychopathology. For all models, self-compassion was explored as a moderator of indirect and direct effects. Results revealed how psychological distress mediated the link between perceived discrimination and body appreciation/eating psychopathology, as well as between weight bias internalization and body appreciation, but not eating psychopathology. For weight bias internalization models only, the statistical links between psychological distress in relation to body appreciation/eating psychopathology were stronger for those with lower self-compassion. Self-compassion may promote more effective coping and outcomes for individuals who are subject to societal stigma.

Project description:Discrimination is a type of social adversity defined as unfair treatment and prejudice against individuals due to membership of a specific group. Discrimination has been linked to several age-related outcomes such as cognitive decline, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. However, the molecular drivers to these observations are poorly understood. Social adverse factors have been associated with proinflammatory and interferon gene expression, a phenomenon described as Conserved Transcriptome Response to Adversity. It is not known whether there are additional genes whose transcription is associated with exposure to discrimination among both African American and White adults. In this study, we have examined how perceived discrimination in African American and White adults affects genome-wide transcriptome differences using RNA sequencing. Perceived discrimination was measured based on responses to lifetime discrimination and racial discrimination questionnaires. Differential gene expression and pathway analysis was conducted in a cohort (N=59) stratified by race, sex, and discrimination exposure. We found that there were 28 significantly differentially expressed genes associated with high discrimination exposure in African American adults when compared to White adults with high discrimination exposure. The most significantly upregulated genes among African Americans with high discrimination exposure were related to immune function immunoglobulin lambda variable 2-11 (IGLV2-11), S100 calcium binding protein B (S100B), immunoglobulin kappa variable 3-20 (IGKV3-20), immunoglobulin kappa variable 4-1 (IGKV4-1); the most significantly downregulated genes were associated with immune modulation and cancer, lung cancer associated transcript 1 (LUCAT1), thrombospondin 1 (THBS1), and actin related protein 2/3 complex inhibitor (ARPIN). In addition, the most significantly upregulated Gene Ontology (GO) biological process among African American men with high exposure to discrimination compared to White male adults with high exposure to discrimination was regulation of cytokine biosynthetic processes. Conversely, immune response was the most significantly downregulated GO biological process among African American women with high discrimination exposure compared White women with high discrimination exposure. Understanding the biological pathways through which adverse social factors like discrimination affect gene expression will be critical in advancing knowledge of age-related health disparities.

Project description:AimThis study investigated whether perceived weight discrimination is associated with increased risk for major chronic medical conditions and whether the associations persist after adjusting for other stressful life events in addition to BMI, physical activity and sociodemographic variables.MethodsThe study included 21 357 overweight/obese adults (52.9% women) from the 2001 to 2002 and 2004 to 2005 National Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions.ResultsPerceived weight discrimination was significantly associated with risk for arteriosclerosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, myocardial infarction, minor heart conditions and stomach ulcers. Perceived weight discrimination was associated with reporting more stressful life events. After adjusting additionally for stressful life events in the final multiple logistic regression, associations with arteriosclerosis, diabetes and minor cardiac conditions remained significant. Gender-stratified analyses revealed that perceived weight discrimination was associated with different medical conditions in women than men, and many associations became non-significant when adjusting for stressful life events, particularly for women.ConclusionsAmong overweight/obese adults, perceived weight discrimination is associated with significantly increased risk for obesity-related chronic medical conditions even after adjusting for BMI, physical activity and sociodemographic variables. Accounting for other acute stressful life events may also be important in understanding the health effects of perceived weight discrimination. Such added health risk of overweight/obesity posed by perceived weight discrimination warrants public health and policy interventions against weight discrimination to reduce the socioeconomic burden of obesity.
