Associations of sleep characteristics with atopic disease: a cross-sectional study among Chinese adolescents.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Adolescence, as a transition between childhood and adulthood, is a critical stage for the long-term control of atopic diseases. We aim to determine if sleep characteristics are involved in the increased risk of atopic disease among adolescents.

Methods

Adopting the stratified cluster random sampling method, this cross-sectional survey included 4932 participants aged 12-18 years. The Chinese version of adolescent sleep disturbance questionnaire and the adolescent sleep hygiene scale were used to collect information on sleep problems and sleep hygiene, respectively. Logistic regression models were implemented to examine the associations of sleep with atopic diseases.

Results

Sleep duration was not found to be related with allergic diseases. By contrast, sleep-disordered breathing was associated with an increased risk of asthma (adjusted OR?=?1.79, 95% CI 1.25-2.55), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR?=?1.95, 95% CI 1.52-2.49), and eczema (adjusted OR?=?1.63, 95% CI 1.23-2.16); poor sleep physiology was correspondent to increased odds of asthma (adjusted OR?=?1.69, 95% CI 1.24-2.29), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR?=?1.40, 95% CI 1.13-1.73) and eczema (adjusted OR?=?1.66, 95% CI 1.32-2.09); non-optimal sleep environment was associated with an increased prevalence of asthma (adjusted OR?=?1.52, 95% CI 1.08-2.12), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR?=?1.32, 95% CI 1.04-1.69) and eczema (adjusted OR?=?1.53, 95% CI 1.19-1.96).

Conclusions

As sleep-disordered breathing, poor sleep physiology and non-optimal sleep environment were associated with a higher risk of allergic diseases, the results of this study provide a new concept for the adjuvant treatment of allergic diseases in adolescents. Management strategies of allergic diseases should take regular screening and targeted treatment of sleep issues into account.

Project description:Background and objectivesTo assess the association between self-reported sleep duration and quality and odds of having CKD in Chinese adults on the basis of a community study.Design, setting, participants, & measurementsIn this cross-sectional study, we included 11,040 Chinese adults who participated in an ongoing prospective study, the Kailuan cohort. Survey questionnaire items addressed insomnia, daytime sleepiness, snoring, and sleep duration during their 2012 interview. Overall sleep quality was evaluated by summarizing these four sleep parameters. Fasting blood samples and single random midstream morning urine samples were collected in 2012 and analyzed for serum creatinine and proteinuria. CKD was defined by eGFR<60 ml/min per 1.73 m2 or proteinuria >300 mg/dl. We also examined those at high or very high risk of having CKD, on the basis of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes recommendations. The association between sleep quality and CKD was assessed using logistic regression model.ResultsWorse overall sleep quality was associated with higher likelihood of being high or very high risk for CKD (multiadjusted odds ratio, 2.69; 95% confidence interval, 1.30 to 5.59 comparing two extreme categories; P trend <0.01), but not overall CKD (multiadjusted odds ratio, 1.58; 95% confidence interval, 0.89 to 2.80 comparing two extreme categories; P trend =0.46), after adjusting for potential confounders. Specifically, individuals with worse sleep quality were more likely to have proteinuria (multiadjusted odds ratio, 1.95; 95% confidence interval, 1.03 to 3.67 comparing two extreme categories; P trend =0.02), rather than lower eGFR level (multiadjusted mean eGFR levels were 96.4 and 93.6 ml/min per 1.73 m2 in the two extreme sleep categories, respectively; P trend =0.13). However, there was no statistically significant association between individual sleep parameters and CKD status.ConclusionsWorse overall sleep quality was associated with higher odds of being high or very high risk for CKD and proteinuria in Chinese adults.

Project description:In this large perspective cohort among European children and adolescents, we observed that daytime napping was positively associated with bone stiffness, while short or long sleep duration combined with poor sleep quality was associated with less bone stiffness. Our findings are important for obtaining optimal bone stiffness in childhood.IntroductionTo examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep duration, sleep quality, and bone stiffness index (SI) in European children and adolescents.MethodsFour thousand eight hundred seventy-one children aged 2-11 years from the IDEFICS study and 861 children aged 6-15 years from the subsequent I.Family study were included. Sleep duration (i.e., nocturnal sleep and daytime napping) and sleep quality (i.e., irregularly bedtime routine, have difficulty falling asleep and trouble getting up in the morning) were reported by self-administrated questionnaires. Nocturnal sleep duration was converted into age-specific z-scores, and total sleep duration was classified into short, adequate, and long based on the National Sleep Recommendation. Calcaneal SI of both feet were measured using quantitative ultrasound. Linear mixed-effects models with country as a random effect were used, with adjustments for sex, age, pubertal status, family socioeconomic status, physical activity, screen time, body mass index, and daylight duration.ResultsNocturnal sleep duration z-scores were positively associated with SI percentiles among participants with adequate sleep duration at baseline. Moreover, the positive association between daytime napping and SI percentiles was more pronounced in participants with adequate sleep duration at baseline, while at 4-year follow-up was more pronounced in participants with short sleep duration. In addition, extreme sleep duration at baseline predicted lower SI percentiles after 4 years in participants with poor sleep quality.ConclusionThe positive associations between nocturnal sleep, daytime napping and SI depended on total sleep duration. Long-term detrimental effect of extreme sleep duration on SI only existed in individuals with poor sleep quality.
