We report on the pediatric block practice digitized due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nineteen seminars were recorded, which represent the broad spectrum of pediatrics as comprehensively as possible, and made available on the learning platform ILIAS in a learning sequence. Project description:IntroductionThe session was designed as part of a yearlong elective within the Association of American Medical Colleges' Education in Pediatrics Across the Continuum (EPAC) pilot at the University of California, San Francisco. The EPAC pilot aims for longitudinal pediatric education across the medical school and pediatric residency years, with specific emphasis on competency-based advancement. The goal of the elective is to cultivate students' early interest in pediatrics.MethodsThis is an interactive case-based session for medical students on the clinical presentation and initial evaluation of adolescent depression. We developed this session based on an informal needs assessment at our local institution as well as prior research documenting the minimal time allocated to child and adolescent psychiatry in medical school curricula. The 80-minute interactive case-based format integrates knowledge and clinical experiences while requiring minimal equipment and preparation.ResultsThe session was administered at the University of California, San Francisco, in 2015 to 22 students. Fourteen participants completed evaluation questions (64% response rate). Of responders, 92%-100% thought the session was very or extremely effective at meeting the stated objectives, was interactive, had appropriate time allocated, and was very or extremely helpful at reinforcing objectives from the medical school curriculum. Thirteen participants completed postsession knowledge acquisition questions and performed better than controls (90% vs. 75%), but the difference was not statistically significant.DiscussionOther medical schools could easily administer this session as presented or adapt it to a different target audience or for different time constraints. It is an effective, interactive, well-paced, and helpful means of introducing to medical students a topic that is relevant for anyone going into pediatrics. Likewise, it helps to rectify the lack of child and adolescent psychiatry content in most medical school programs, and it aligns with the movement in undergraduate medical education towards more clinically integrated, inquiry-based curricula with attention to professional development.

Project description:The primary objective of this study was to describe the case mix experienced by chiropractic students during their clinical internship at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College. Secondary objectives were to characterize teaching clinic patient populations, assess the similarity to previously published data for practicing chiropractors, and describe the treatment plans being recommended by interns.A prospective, observational study was conducted using a convenience sample of 24 chiropractic interns. Data were collected by interns using a standardized form that was completed for each new patient and each new complaint examined during the 1-year internship. Standardized forms included data regarding patient demographics, complaint characteristics, and treatment recommendations.Data were included for 23 of 24 participating interns, who described 828 patients and a total of 948 unique complaint presentations. Overall, 60% of patients were female, 86% were 18 to 64 years old, and 23% were naive to chiropractic care. Of all presenting complaints, 93% were pain-based, 67% were chronic, 65% included spinal complaints, and 7% presented with red flags; individual interns' experiences were variable and are described. On average, treatment recommendations called for 9.4 visits and often included multimodal treatment approaches, most commonly soft-tissue therapies (91%), home-based active care (84%), and spine manipulation (70%).The findings of this study suggest that patients presenting to CMCC teaching clinics are similar to those reported previously to attend private chiropractic clinics. While all participating interns encountered multiple complex clinical cases, very few had experience with pediatric populations. This study adds to the few that detail the characteristics of patients attending chiropractic teaching clinics; to our knowledge it is the first to describe average case loads of chiropractic interns.

Project description:BackgroundTraditional teaching of medical microbiology has revolved around an organism centric, didactic lecture approach, lacking clinical relevance and appeal. Studies have shown that case-based learning in comparison to didactic lectures leads to a greater comprehension and understanding of the subject. To conduct a pilot study in our medical. College for the current MBBS batch (2019) (following the old pattern of syllabus), on student perceptions on case based learning (CBL) before the new Competency based undergraduate curriculum is rolled out for 2021 batch coming to second year of MBBS.MethodsThis pilot study was conducted at a medical college. The study was designed as an observational study on educational research and was approved by the institutional ethical committee (IEC). Study participants were second MBBS students willing to participate in the study (n = 60). Four topics were chosen to be taught as casebased scenarios as per the new CBME syllabus. Six weeks after the first CBL session was conducted, a survey questionnaire was given to the students to share their perceptions anonymously. The questionnaire had questions framed to assess the students' perception about CBL. The evaluation was done on a 5-point Likert. The responses collected were compiled in Microsoft excel sheet and the data was analysed statistically. Faculty perspective was also gathered.ResultsMajority of the students perceived CBL positively. There was a shift in the student's perspective towards the subject of microbiology, from being perceived earlier as theoretical and non-clinical to being perceived as appealing and clinically relevant.

Project description:The aim of the course "interprofessional communication and nursing" is to reflect medical students' experiences from the nursing internship. The content of the course focuses on barriers and support of interprofessional communication as a foundation for teamwork between nursing professionals and physicians. The nursing internship is for most medical students the first contact with nursing professionals and can lead to perceptions about the other group that might hinder interprofessional teamwork and consequently harm patients. To meet the demographic challenges ahead it is important to emphasize interprofessional education in the study of medicine and better prepare future physicians for interprofessional collaboration.The design of the course includes an assessment of a change in the students' perceptions about nursing and interprofessional communication. The first class meeting presents the starting point of the assessment and visualizes students' perceptions of nursing and medicine. The content of the following class meetings serve to enhance the students' knowledge about nursing as a profession with its own theories, science and scholarship. In addition, all students have to write a research paper that entails to interview one nursing professional and one physician about their ideas of interprofessional communication and to compare the interviews with their own experiences from the nursing internship. To access what students learned during the course a reflective discussion takes place at the last meeting combined with an analysis of the students' research papers.The assessment of the students' perceptions about the nursing profession and the importance of successful interprofessional communication showed a new and deeper understanding of the topic. They were able to identify barriers and support measures of interprofessional communication and their own responsibilities as part of a team.Interprofessional education is an important part of medical education and should be a topic from the beginning. The assessment of the course shows that it is possible and important to integrate the topic early in the curriculum.

Project description:PurposeNew training methods sprung up using communication technologies after the suspension imposed on Greek Universities due to restrictive measures against the COVID-19 pandemic. The current questionnaire-based study evaluates the efficacy and utility of the interactive online anatomy labs (ONALs) in assisting the assimilation of anatomy and substituting dissection labs during the pandemic.MethodsONALs consisting of video recorded demonstrations of dissected cadavers were developed so that real-time dialogue and interaction between tutor and students was feasible. First- and second-year medical students who were taught neuroanatomy and splanchnology and first-year dental students who were taught head and neck anatomy evaluated the ONALs.ResultsOne hundred and sixty students participated. The 61 students (38.13%) attended the splanchnology, 58 (36.25%) the neuroanatomy, and 41 (25.63%) the head and neck anatomy course. 86.9% of the participants found the ONALs beneficial for their study. The 75.5% with previous experience of a "face-to-face" dissection replied that the ONALs cannot substitute satisfactorily "face-to-face" dissections. 63.8% replied positively to the ONALs maintenance after the pandemic.ConclusionsThe study's novelty is based on the maintenance of the greater possible interaction between tutors and students during the ONALs, in contrast to the previously described usage of dissection educational videos in anatomy. Our findings reinforce the established statement that "a teaching dissection is an irreplaceable tool in anatomy education". However, the ONALs were well-received by the students and can be kept on as a supplementary teaching modality and can be proven quite useful in Medical Schools that lack cadavers.

Project description:Interns are expected to teach medical students, yet there is little formal training in medical school to prepare them for this role. To enhance the teaching skills of our graduating students we initiated a 4-hour "teaching to teach" course as part of the end of the fourth-year curriculum. Course evaluations demonstrate that students strongly support this program (overall ratings 2000 to 2005: mean=4.4 [scale 1 to 5], n=224). When 2004 course participants were surveyed during the last month of their internship, 84%"agree" or "strongly agree" with the statement: "The teaching to teach course helped prepare me for my role as a teacher during internship" (2005: mean 4.2 [scale 1 to 5], n=45, response rate 60%). A course preparing fourth-year students to teach during internship is both feasible and reproducible, with a minimal commitment of faculty and resident time. Participants identify it as an important addition to their education and as useful during internship.

Project description:BackgroundIn view of the harsh reality Chinese paediatricians face, the challenge of paediatric education is about instilling not only knowledge and clinical skills but also resilience and beliefs. The aim of the study is to explore a more effective method than the traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) model for optimizing educational outcomes by establishing an innovative, comprehensive, case-based learning (CBL) model combined with the micro-film technique (MF + CBL). This approach has four important components: interests (attraction), knowledge application, competency, and scenario coping skills.MethodsExperimental research was conducted via a controlled parallel group study. The total sample of 104 senior-year students (Chinese) majoring in clinical medicine was randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group was exposed to the MF + CBL model and the control group to the LBL model. Overall, the results were assessed after an 8-week course via a student self-assessment questionnaire, a satisfaction survey and the final examination.ResultsThe experimental group generally performed better than the control group on the student self-assessment (P<0.05), satisfaction survey (P<0.05), and final examination (80.02 ± 3.77 vs 73.65 ± 3.69, P = 0.000). The open question at the end of the questionnaire revealed that a small number of students did not favour the MF + CBL model due to its time- and energy-consuming features.ConclusionsCompared with LBL, the MF + CBL model was an innovative teaching method that promoted more comprehensive quality development. It represents an alternative model for optimizing the capacity of future paediatric doctors.

Project description:Introduction:Interprofessional education, which gives medical students the opportunity to learn from, with, and about other health professionals, is an essential component of the undergraduate medical education curriculum. Nonetheless, deliberate and sustained integration of interprofessional education into the undergraduate medical learning experience can be challenging, especially within the clinical setting. Methods:We implemented a 75-minute, interactive, collaborative, case-based conference focusing on an interprofessional clinical challenge in a pediatric setting. Medical students on their pediatrics core rotation and trainees within social work, nursing, pharmacy, and nutrition explored the concept of a team, reflected on roles, and considered how interprofessional collaboration could influence patient outcomes. Results:One hundred ninety-two health professions students participated in 15 sessions at three sites over a 10-month period (September 2017-July 2018). After each session, participants completed a session evaluation. They gave high ratings to the effectiveness and relevance of the experience and the case vignette. Responses to open-ended questions revealed that students had learned the importance of leveraging the expertise of team members and had resolved to speak up when faced with an interprofessional challenge in the future. Discussion:This case-based session is a logistically feasible and positively received opportunity for health professions students to discuss interprofessional collaboration. It could be adapted for a variety of learner populations and academic environments and could be incorporated into existing curricula.

Project description:BackgroundObjective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) have been used to assess the clinical competence of medical students for decades. Limited data are available on the factors that predict students' performance on the OSCEs. The aim of our study was to evaluate the factors predicting performance on the pediatrics final OSCE, including the timing of students' clerkship and their performance on the in-training OSCE and written examinations.MethodsGrades in pediatrics for 3 consecutive academic years (2013-2016) were included. The average scores of the in-training OSCEs, written and final OSCEs and written exams were compared among the three years using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. The correlations between performance on the final OSCEs and the in-training OSCEs, in-training written exams and final written exams were studied using Spearman's Rho correlation test. The effect of the timing of the clerkship on the final OSCE performance was evaluated.ResultsA total of 286 students' records were included. There were 115 male students and 171 female students (M:F 1:1.5). There were strong positive correlations between students' performance on the in-training examinations (OSCE and written) and the final OSCE (correlation coefficients of 0.508 and 0.473, respectively). The final written exam scores were positively correlated with the final OSCEs (r = 0.448). There was no significant effect of the timing of the clerkship.ConclusionsStudents' performance on in-training examinations might predict their final OSCE scores. Thus, it is important to provide students with the necessary intervention at an early stage to reduce failure rates. The final OSCE performance does not seem to be affected by the timing of the clerkship.

Project description:In this article, we describe the design and implementation of an e-internship program that BioScience Project offers high school students over the summer. Project topics are in the areas of behavioral neuroscience and brain disorders. All research, teaching, and communication is done online using open access databases and webtools, a learning management system, and Google apps. Students conduct all aspects of a research project from formulating a question to collecting and analyzing the data, to presenting their results in the form of a scientific poster. Results from a pilot study involving fifteen students indicate that students are capable of successfully completing such a project, and benefit both intellectually and professionally from participating in the e-internship program.
