Green-Emitting Lead-Free Cs₄SnBr₆ Zero-Dimensional Perovskite Nanocrystals with Improved Air Stability.

ABSTRACT: We report the synthesis and characterization of nanocrystals of a novel fully inorganic lead-free zero-dimensional perovskite, Cs₄SnBr₆. Samples are made of crystals with an average size of ?20 nm with green emission centered around 530 nm. Interestingly, both colloidal suspensions and thin films show an enhanced air stability with respect to that of any other previous tin-based nanocrystalline system, with emission persisting for tens of hours under laboratory air.

Broadband emission from zero-dimensional Cs4PbI6 perovskite nanocrystals.

Project description:To overcome the drawbacks in three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, such as instability, surface hydration, and ion migration, recently researchers have focused on comparatively stable lower-dimensional perovskite derivatives. All-inorganic zero-dimensional (0D) perovskites (e.g., Cs4PbX6; X = Cl-, Br-, I-) can be evolved as a high performing material due to their larger exciton binding energy and better structural stability. The clear understanding of carrier recombination process in 0D perovskites is very important for better exploitation in light-emitting devices. In this work, we comprehensively studied the light emission process in 0D Cs4PbI6 nanocrystals (NCs) and interestingly we observe intense white light emission at low temperatures. According to our experimental observations, we conclude that the white light emission contains an intrinsic exciton emission at 2.95 eV along with a broadband emission covering from 1.77 eV to 2.6 eV. We also confirm that the broadband emission is related to the carrier recombination of both self-trapped excitons (STE) and defect state trapped excitons. Our investigations reveal the carrier recombination processes in Cs4PbI6 NCs and provide experimental guidelines for the potential application of white light generation.

Nature of Self-Trapped Exciton Emission in Zero-Dimensional Cs2ZrCl6 Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:Low dimensional perovskite-inspired materials with self-tapped exciton (STE) emission have stimulated a surge of cutting-edge research in optoelectronics. Despite numerous efforts on developing versatile low-dimensional perovskite-inspired materials with efficient STE emissions, there is little emphasis on the intrinsic dynamics of STE-based broad emission in these materials. Here, we investigated the excited state dynamics in zero-dimensional (0D) Cs2ZrCl6 nanocrystals (NCs) with efficient blue STE emission. By using femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy, the ultrafast STE formation process within 400 fs is directly observed. Then, the formed STEs relax to an intermediate STE state with a lifetime of ∼180 ps before reaching the emissive STE state with a lifetime of ∼15 μs. Our work offers a comprehensive and precise dynamic picture of STE emission in low-dimensional metal halides and sheds light on extending their potential applications.

Green-Emitting Powders of Zero-Dimensional Cs4PbBr6: Delineating the Intricacies of the Synthesis and the Origin of Photoluminescence.

Project description:A detailed investigation into the synthesis of green-emitting powders of Cs4PbBr6 and CsPbBr3 materials by antisolvent precipitation from CsBr-PbBr2 precursor solutions in dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is reported. Various solvated lead bromide and polybromide species (PbBr2, [PbBr3]-, [PbBr4]2-, and possibly [PbBr5]3-or [PbBr6]4-) are detected in the precursor solutions by optical absorbance and emission spectroscopies. The solvodynamic size of the species in solution is strongly solvent-dependent: ~1 nm species were detected in DMSO, while significantly larger species were observed in DMF by dynamic light scattering. The solvodynamic size of the lead bromide species plays a critical role in determining the Cs-Pb-Br composition of the precipitated powders: smaller species favor the precipitation of Cs4PbBr6, while larger species template the formation of CsPbBr3 under identical experimental conditions. The powders have been characterized by 133Cs and 207Pb solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and 133Cs sensitivity toward the different Cs environments within Cs4PbBr6 is demonstrated. Finally, the possible origins of green emission in Cs4PbBr6 samples are discussed. It is proposed that a two-dimensional Cs2PbBr4 inclusion may be responsible for green emission at ~520 nm in addition to the widely acknowledged CsPbBr3 impurity, although we found no conclusive experimental evidence supporting such claims.

Aromatic 2,2-Diphenylethylamine Ligand Exchange of FA0.9Cs0.1PbBr3 Perovskite Nanocrystals for High-Efficiency Pure Green Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) with long alkyl ligands cannot easily form high-quality composite films owing to their poor dispersibility in π-conjugated small molecules and polymer host materials. In this study, we demonstrated that the aromatic ligand exchange of mixed-cation FA0.9Cs0.1PbBr3 NCs using 2,2-diphenylethylamine (DPEA) can not only enable the fabrication of high-efficiency light-emitting diodes (LEDs) but also allows dispersibility in host materials. The DPEA-NC film exhibited a pure green wavelength of 530 nm and a full width at half-maximum of 20.9 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 90.9%. A DPEA-NC LED achieved a luminance of 39,700 cd/m2 and an external quantum efficiency of 18.6% even in a thick NC film. Interestingly, the DPEA-NCs formed a composite film with small-molecule tris(4-carbazoyl-9-ylphenyl)amine. The operational stability of this composite LED was eight times higher than that of the DPEA-NC LED owing to enhanced hole-electron charge balance and the suppression of perovskite NC degradation. Therefore, the aromatic DPEA ligand exchange of perovskite NCs is an effective way to improve their electrical properties and operational device stabilities.

Implications for applicability of the photodegradation and self-recovery of green-emitting CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals.

Project description:CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized by the conventional hot-injection method are photochromatic luminescent nanomaterials due to the photoinduced desorption and re-adsorption of the surface ligands. The apparent color and the luminescence intensity were changed significantly during excitation light irradiation and following dark storage; however, the emission wavelength was almost retained. This work investigates the change in emission color of light-emitting diode lighting using the CsPbBr3 NCs to realize photochromatic luminescence. The results showed definite shifts in emission color caused by changes in optical absorption and green luminescence intensity of the NCs, potentially broadening the application feasibility of CsPbBr3 NCs as photochromatic luminescent nanomaterials.

Exciton Relaxation Dynamics in Perovskite Cs4PbBr6 Nanocrystals.

Project description:Lower-dimensional metal halide perovskites have been recognized as an efficient white light emitter. The broad band emission spectrum originates from the recombination of excited charge carriers through free excitons (FEs), self-trapped excitons (STEs), and defect-trapped excitons. However, the emission properties of zero-dimensional (0-D) perovskites have not been explored extensively. Here, in this work, we have performed low-temperature absorbance, photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation (PLE), PL lifetime, and Raman measurements to understand the exciton relaxation processes in Cs4PbBr6 NCs. Our experimental observations indicate that two distinct UV light spectra evolved from the photoexcited carrier recombination through FE and STE states. We emphasize that such UV light sources can be beneficial for various applications, like curing of materials, disinfection of viruses, hygiene control, etc.

Moisture-Assisted near-UV Emission Enhancement of Lead-Free Cs4CuIn2Cl12 Double Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:Lead-based halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are recognized as emerging emissive materials with superior photoluminescence (PL) properties. However, the toxicity of lead and the swift chemical decomposition under atmospheric moisture severely hinder their commercialization process. Herein, we report the first colloidal synthesis of lead-free Cs4CuIn2Cl12 layered double perovskite NCs via a facile moisture-assisted hot-injection method stemming from relatively nontoxic precursors. Although moisture is typically detrimental to NC synthesis, we demonstrate that the presence of water molecules in Cs4CuIn2Cl12 synthesis enhances the PL quantum yield (mainly in the near-UV range), induces a morphological transformation from 3D nanocubes to 2D nanoplatelets, and converts the dark transitions to radiative transitions for the observed self-trapped exciton relaxation. This work paves the way for further studies on the moisture-assisted synthesis of novel lead-free halide perovskite NCs for a wide range of applications.

ZnX2 mediated post-synthetic transformation of zero dimensional Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals for opto-electronic applications.

Project description:Herein we demonstrate a facile approach for the synthesis of all inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystal composites CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) with high quantum yield by post-synthetic modulation of zero dimensional Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals with ZnX2 salts. The transformation of Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals into CsPbBr3 takes place in two steps, the first step being the surface modification of the Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals with Zn2+ ions and the second step being extraction of CsBr by the Zn2+ ions resulting in the formation of composite Cs4PbBr6/CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. The transformed composite nanocrystals were found to have a PL QY exceeding 90% and the shape of the nanocrystals also changed from hexagonal to cubic shaped. Owing to the highly ionic nature of the nanocrystals, complete anion exchange could be also realized using ZnI2 salt. In the case of the iodide post-treated samples, nanorods were obtained which exhibited bright red photoluminescence. Photodetectors based on the ZnI2 treated Cs4PbBr6 NCs were fabricated, and the photodetectors exhibited a high on/off ratio with a fast response time. The excellent optoelectronic properties make this treatment versatile for a wide range of functional optoelectronic devices like light emitting diodes and photovoltaic devices.

Bright Blue Emitting Cu-Doped Cs2ZnCl4 Colloidal Nanocrystals.

Project description:We report here the synthesis of undoped and Cu-doped Cs2ZnCl4 nanocrystals (NCs) in which we could tune the concentration of Cu from 0.7 to 7.5%. Cs2ZnCl4 has a wide band gap (4.8 eV), and its crystal structure is composed of isolated ZnCl4 tetrahedra surrounded by Cs+ cations. According to our electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, in 0.7 and 2.1% Cu-doped NCs the Cu ions were present in the +1 oxidation state only, while in NCs at higher Cu concentrations we could detect Cu(II) ions (isovalently substituting the Zn(II) ions). The undoped Cs2ZnCl4 NCs were non emissive, while the Cu-doped samples had a bright intragap photoluminescence (PL) at ∼2.6 eV mediated by band-edge absorption. Interestingly, the PL quantum yield was maximum (∼55%) for the samples with a low Cu concentration ([Cu] ≤ 2.1%), and it systematically decreased when further increasing the concentration of Cu, reaching 15% for the NCs with the highest doping level ([Cu] = 7.5%). The same (∼2.55 eV) emission band was detected under X-ray excitation. Our density functional theory calculations indicated that the PL emission could be ascribed only to Cu(I) ions: these ions promote the formation of trapped excitons, through which an efficient emission takes place. Overall, these Cu-doped Cs2ZnCl4 NCs, with their high photo- and radio-luminescence emission in the blue spectral region that is free from reabsorption, are particularly suitable for applications in ionizing radiation detection.

Zero-Dimensional Methylammonium Bismuth Iodide-Based Lead-Free Perovskite Capacitor.

Project description:Symmetrical electrochemical capacitors are attracting immense attention because of their fast charging-discharging ability, high energy density, and low cost of production. The current research in this area is mainly focused on exploring novel low-cost electrode materials with higher energy and power densities. In the present work, we fabricated an electrochemical double-layer capacitor using methylammonium bismuth iodide (CH3NH3)3Bi2I9, a lead-free, zero-dimensional hybrid perovskite material. A maximum areal capacitance of 5.5 mF/cm2 was obtained, and the device retained 84.8% of its initial maximum capacitance even after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles. Impedance spectroscopy measurements revealed that the active layer provides a high surface area for the electrolyte to access. As a result, the charge transport resistance is reasonably low, which is advantageous for delivering excellent performance.
